This is tough, I'm not sure it's good for kids

I remember the original run of Endless Quest books from the 80s and always found the more engaging and better written the ground-breaking Choose Your Own Adventure books. This updated book is gorgeous, with full color illustrations on most pages and a tense story line. A young elven mage is attacked by giants and separated from her family. Now she must choose between trying to rescue her brother and mother to the south or father in the north. With danger waiting in both directions!
My kids and I have tried this several times and met several grizzly deaths or unfulfilling endings. Despite good judgement, genre savvy and frequently marking our page to turn back, we still have not found a path that leads to the rescue of the family.
So while it's well-written and tense, younger kids may find this book frustrating or depressing. The vocabulary is also a bit higher than expected, maybe 4th or 5th grade level at least.
