I gave Season 1 of Bosch on Amazon Prime Video only 3 stars, because it was too typical of a cop story. I gave Season 2 a chance to improve, and it did not disappoint me. When Season 3 came out, I couldn't wait to watch, and it was the best, so far. Rather than waiting for Season 4, I thought I'd check out Michael Connelly's page on Amazon, and I was surprised to find how many books he'd written. I ordered the first book, Black Echo, just to see how the whole thing started, and was into the story from Page 1. Connelly just has the knack: the story development, the working of phrases, the technical cop talk, and the humanity of his creation, Harry Bosch. After watching Titus Welliver portray Bosch for 3 seasons, I could see him in my mind as I read this book, and it absolutely enhanced my experience.
Connelly does not resort to pacing, chase scenes, and the like to drive the story. Nor does he leave the reader hanging at the end of a chapter, then change the scene in the next chapter, just to create tension. He just tells a damn good story and lets it play out. I 'm glad there are 20+ books on Harry Bosch, because I'm already addicted.

1.0 out of 5 starsBoring sexist and transphobic/homophobic
Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2021
I cannot fathom how this is a popular series… Placing aside the starting humor hinges on a transgender joke there seems to be some solid PTSD engagement and real world issues going on. But the plot hinges on Deus Ex Machina informants and the main character just bull heading his way through each scenario with no finesse or reason besides being inherently right. The one female character is a one dimensional sex interest who is constantly disrespected. There is the whole entrap and beat gay men who would be to scared to report picking up a sex worker. I can deal with some level of sexism etc in a book like this if the overall plot and writing is good otherwise… but this book just doesn’t have that to carry it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Show compared with the Books
Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2019

I read this book from the perspective of having seen the Amazon Series, but never having read a Connelly Book. I really enjoy the TV show and looking forward to Season Five. The whole thing is a rarity. Good books are rarely turned into good television. Hollywood always seems to screw it up. But not this time.

Cop shows are usually full of the usual cliches- good looking cops driving fancy cars for example. And it's often easy to predict the ending. But that's not the case in the Bosch novels/TV show. Here we have a realistic, flawed main character. And the cases he works on are not solved in an hour.

The Black Echo Novel takes the same meticulous approach the tv show does. Connelly puts you on the gritty streets of Los Angeles. You go along with Detective Bosch in his quest to solve a mystery. It starts with a dead body in a drainage pipe and ends with bank robberies and FBI intrigue. And you're along for the ride.

These stories are not for the impatient. Like real life, it takes a lot of work to solve a murder, particularly when it's committed by smart people. And we get all the details. There's Bosch tailing a suspect, getting coffee, and in his spare time having a fling with an FBI Agent. And we get the dirty politics of Los Angeles too. You have ambitious internal affairs officers following Bosch and trying to catch him doing something dirty. Just think of them as 'The Rat Squad.'

In Summary, I think the show and books are a great template that more people should follow. The creator/author of a great series of books was given creative freedom by Amazon to produce a series that is very faithful to the books. Think of it as the opposite of Dune. That was a great epic book which was turned into a horrible movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bosch is suspenseful, fun, exciting, straight forward type of detective!

Below are a few of my favorite quotes or scenes from The Black Echo, then my thoughts at the end.
BOSCH is a methodical, traditional, superstitious and intriguing detective!!

As one of Bosch's bosses was talking to him, Harry stopped listening to what he was saying and all that Bosch could think about was this guy's eyebrows. . . "Bosch decided that watching his eyebrows was like watching two caterpillars charging each other." THEN later. . . "The caterpillars seemed to quiver with fear. " LOVE IT! !

When he teamed up with J. Edgar for the first time .  .  .
Hieronymus Bosch . . . Jesus, that’s your first name?” Edgar said. “Harry for short. How’d your momma come up with that one?” “She had a thing about fifteenth-century painters. It goes with the last name. Go check on the file, then call me back. I’ll wait here.” “I can’t even pronounce it, man.” “Rhymes with ‘anonymous.’” “Okay, I’ll try that.

“Hieronymus Bosch.… The only thing your mother gave you was the name of a painter dead five hundred years.

“Harry, be careful with that stuff about an inside man. If you go trying to sell that and it’s not true, you could give your enemies all they need to bury you.” Enemies, Bosch thought. Who are my enemies this time?

" Bosch had taken a shower, but his clothes were as fresh as the ashtray in a used car."

I really liked HARRY BOSCH - THE BLACK ECHO !!! And I have really enjoyed all of the Seasons of BOSCH on Amazon Prime! Great show! I am looking forward to the next book BLACK ICE and to the next season! Thanks Michael Connelly , I AM NOW A ADDICT OF HARRY BOSCH!

No matter what book you read, you're in for many UP ALL NIGHT BINGES!!! I've yet to put Michael Connelly's books down once I start reading one!! So start early, shut the cell phone off, TV off, get your munchies & lots of caffeine ready and HANG ON FOR ONE HELLUVA READ!! Harry Bosch is one of my favorite characters ever!! And Amazon has the best drama series ever...YUPPERS!!! Harry Bosch has finally become a TV star!!! I knew from the day I bought his first book that Michael Connelly would rise to be an author in his own right!! Original plots, incredible characters that are complex and leave you guessing right up to the very last page!! Michael Connelly's character Harry Bosch is one of the most intense, riveting, mysterious, and very sexy without acting like it, detective that I've had a crush on since the first book. I NEVER write long reviews, but Michael Connelly deserves it and the 5 stars. He's a perfect 10 in my book. Gritty, down right KICK ASS writing!!! And that's my review!! GO GET THE FIRST BOOK AND ENJOY!!!

Watched the Bosch Amazon Prime Original and cannot wait for the second. After power watching the season, I looked up the author. Since this was the first in the series, I figured that this was the best place to start. The story was fantastic and the character is great as well. I read most of the book on flight from PA to TX with some layovers. Finished and bought up the second. I have not cracked it yet as studying and work is taking up a lot of my time at the present but cannot wait to get into it. If you are a person that likes the genre crime/drama and action, this is a book for you. Loved each page and the characters.
Don't forget to check out the series on Prime. If that does not peak your interest in this author, just wait for more seasons. I know I am.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top-notch police procedural

I'm a little late to the game as far as Bosch goes, as this book was originally published in 1998, but count me as a fan. This story of Vietnam vets who might be involved in a bank heist is a top-notch police procedural with details that reflect Connelly's background as a police reporter for the LA Times: the subterranean world of LA below streets, the Cu Chi tunnels of the Vietnam war, the inner workings of LAPD, and more. The reader senses the level of research that has gone into this story and is easily carried along. Bosch's relationship with a Federal agent feels real and his taciturn nature makes the reader want to kick him at times, but it all adds to the gritty realism. I will definitely be reading more Bosch.

I have been a fan of the television series for several years, but this is the first time I looked for one of the books. The writing is terrific. I have always admired the writing on the show, but realize now that the biggest challenge in the TV show was to pare down the story without destroying it. For any Bosch fan, this is a very satisfying read that fills in a myriad of details that television just doesn't have time for. I now know that I will read all of Michael Connelly's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Michael Connelly Book? Strap in and get ready for a long and fabulous ride.
Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2020

If you are contemplating reading your first Michael Connelly book, you are in for a long and enjoyable ride. After reading his first three, get the inexpensive text—the “Michael Connelly Reading Order Checklist.” Consider the advice. Yes, it does have a payoff reading them in chronological order, not essential, but there are references to previous adventures and it is worthwhile riding this train from station to station in the way this sojourn was created and evolves. Let the whole epic canon unwind, trusting the author’s implied promise that deviating from stories that specifically feature Hieronymus Bosch is not a waste of your time. As of the writing of this review, I am still on the trip. It has gotten me through these quarantine months better than a cable binge and a closet full of popcorn.

I started reading these books after watching and loving the Amazon original, Bosch. The books are amazing. Michael Connelly is the master of the police mystery novel. His writing is so detailed, you feel like you are actually in Los Angeles with Harry Bosch. You never see the twist(s) coming before it does. The characters are well developed and you cannot put these books down. I flew through this book in a couple of days. It’s clearly different from the show, but it all ties together with just a slightly different twist on it or can be explained by time period change. It is 100% worth the read even if you’ve seen the show - it’s completely a new story. Can’t wait to read the next 21 novels!

Saw the amazon series & considered it the best amazon series I've seen. So I ordered this book It didn't let me down.. The 1st 15% moved a little slow but after that it took off. I couldn't put it down. One of the best books I've read in the last couple years. Towards the end when you think everything is wrapped up there's a new development. Good to the last drop. I mean page.
