Marines in space with addded conspiracy - good fun action sci-fi
Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2018
This is the second book in the Cygnus Rising series written by Craig Martelle. This series is a sequel to the "Free Trader" series by the same author.
In this book the central character from the first book, Cain, is promoted from ensign in the space exploration series to Major in the Cygnus Marines. This then is the story of the Cygnus Marines, the training of the first platoon and how they go to space to free the peoples of Concordia from their tyrannical leadership.
For the first part of the book Martelle draws on his experience in the US Marines and blends this with some of the style of Heinlein's starship troopers and his own Nomad series. The conspiratorial elements of the plot are more imaginative and Martelle is using the Cygnus universe more fully and imaginatively with this part of the plot. This series is not as original as Martelle's Nomad series. I've already listed Starship troopers but I could add Damia's Children and the tower and the hive by Anne McCaffery as books which are quite similar in tone and plot to this book and series. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as I like the books I mentioned but it does mean that a reader should be wary of the hype.
This is much better than the first book and it was a book I found hard to put down. The ending does have a strong element of deus ex machina to it. The final resolution does pop up from nowhere which is a shame and it is the weakest part of the book. The cats are still jerks but it's possible they'll end up ruling the universe. I'm glad humans have thumbs.
