5.0 out of 5 starsThe twists & turns are a shock
Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2021
What is the definition of a cult? Just a little group of ladies getting together for a cup of coffee or tea, or something more sinister? The Hive will answer some of those questions. Lindsey is a relentless detective in the search of a killer. The twists and turns in this book are a shock to her. I think even more for me! If you enjoy a good mystery read this book.

3.0 out of 5 starsUnlike his other novels - The Hive

I wasn't sure if Gregg Olsen wrote this book or if someone else did. It was very different from his usual writing, which was suspenseful, exciting, fast paced and thrilling. This one to me was very slow reading, somewhat confusing because of too many characters, kind of lackluster, and nothing much happens until about 70% of the way thru the book. I wanted to quit reading a couple of times but kept plugging along. The last part was nicely tied up and covered everything that had really happened.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful, quick & twisty!
Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2021
At it’s center, The Hive is a suspenseful thriller, featuring a Washington detective, Lindsay, trying to solve a current murder of a young reporter, Sarah, with strange links to a twenty year old murder of a young mother, Calista. Reeling from the suicide of her mentor and partner, Alan, Lindsay pushes forward to reveal that both murderers relate back to a wellness guru and her close knit group of women, the hive. Can Lindsay untangle the web and solve both crimes?

I wasn’t sure about this book when I read that it was about a cult, but I’m glad I picked it up because the main focus is not in itself the cult. The storytelling was perfectly paced to keep it intriguing and intense, with twists I did not even imagine. Gregg Olsen is a first time author for me, but it won’t be the last because I enjoyed his descriptive writing, and engaging characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spellman Farms, not what it seems to bee!
Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2021

In 2000, Spellman Farms on Lummi Island in Washington State seems to be a quiet, serene place for young women to get away from everyday life. Owned by Marnie Spellman, the farm keeps bees and uses their honey & royal jelly, among other things, to create holistic products to sell. Unfortunately, Marnie and some of her “Hive”, made up of 5 of her closest followers, become involved in a murder.

Nineteen years later, Detective Lindsay Jackson of the Ferndale Police Department opens a case of a young lady whose body is found at the base of Maple Falls in Whatcom County, WA. During the investigation, it becomes clear that this murder is intertwined with the murder on Lummi Island. As Lindsay digs further into both cases, she uncovers how the various members of the Hive and their families are involved in the murders.

Once again, author Gregg Olsen has managed to capture the readers’ attention from the first page, and make it exciting to find out as each chapter unfolds who is responsible for the two murders, as well as other mysterious disappearances of people involved with Spellman Farms. This book is remarkable, right to the end.

I highly recommend The Hive to my fellow readers, especially True Crime fans!

3.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Disappointed

As a huge Gregg Olsen fan, I was a little disappointed in this book because the only thing that kept me going to the end was my loyalty to the author. It just seemed to be lacking that spark he usually has, the one that keeps me reading late into the night. This one was too predictable and repetitive in places. Perhaps it was rushed?

5.0 out of 5 stars Mean Girls 2.0: the adult version
Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2021
This is a deliciously twisted and darkly demented story that is told in a very creative way. The story indeed overlaps in an almost nonsensical way until the shuffle is complete and you are left staring at the last word utterly speechless.

Gregg Olsen has done it again- written something so genuinely terrifying, brutally dark, and insanely twisted that you will not be able to stop reading, nor will you handle the sinister truth. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Beware.

The book takes place in the PNW where detective Lindsey Jackman is on the scene for a body that was discovered by a young mother walking with her baby. The book unfolds so well that your mind is spinning wondering where Gregg is going with this. Lindsey soon discovers that this body may be tied to a death many years ago. Marnie Spellman is a health guru who claims to have been lifted in the air by a swarm of bees enlightening her. She makes tons of money off of this and there there are women who join her and become part of her HIVE. The more Lindsay starts poking around, they start to unravel. Will they stay faithful to the "Queen Bee"? at all costs? They all stand something to lose if everything comes tumbling down. Will Lindsay be able to solve this case before another body is found? You'll have to read to see the epic ending of this book. I bet you won't see it coming because I didn't!!

You have to concentrate closely with this story. They are so many characters involved and several have different names throughout. I didn't think that I was going to like it but admit now that it was very interesting, especially in its conclusion.

I’ve read other books by Gregg Olsen before and enjoyed them but this one was all over the place and was so bogged down in so many stories that by the time I finished it I only felt relieved. There were also so many female characters that it was hard to keep them straight. I just didn’t enjoy the book and found the premise silly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Half way through the book I was hoping a swarm would carry it off

Clearly Marnie was a complete sociopath- the cult story line was believable other than that the rest was just ridiculous.

Characters were one dimensional- no depth as to what drive them to the cult and subsequent actions. Why did her mom buy into this myth when it was clear Marnie was stung repeatedly in the incident with the swarm. Why did her father leave everything to her. Other irrelevant details on clothes, looks, houses etc abound making the story thin and over long

Semi- spoiler- I found it completely unbelievable that X would have killed Sarah - not accidentally goes to strangle her multiple times stops and then finally chokes her to death.

Patty and Alan- turns out she’s a big of a sociopath as Marnie. No explanation for Alan other than he loved her.
