Cheryl Stout
5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent, heartwarming Hyde tale of a girl, a mother and a child
Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2020
I have long been a Catherine Ryan Hyde fan. Yes, I loved PAY IT FORWARD (as most people do) but I've enjoyed so many other of Hyde's books. She has a rare talent of bringing her readers into her stories, letting them feel what the characters are feeling.

Brooke is 39 years old, has a 2 year-old daughter, and lives in West L.A. with her mother. She is not happy with this because her mother is not a nice person but she's divorced and can't afford a place of her own yet.

She takes her daughter, Etta, to the movies (mainly to get away from her mother) and on the way home, she is carjacked - and Etta is taken with the car.

Molly is a 16 year-old living on the streets of L.A. and she finds Etta, who has been dumped on the side of the road in her car seat.

What transpires after this is a story that is heartwarming, heartbreaking, and really makes you think. It is about mothers and daughters and what actually what makes up a family.

I loved this story and I loved its characters, especially Molly. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

I received this book from Lake Union Publishing through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.

3.0 out of 5 starsDefinitely an agenda here.

Warning: spoiler alert. I've read many book by this author and absolutely LOVED some of them, but this one left me feeling manipulated, not something I appreciate as a reader. I've read at least a dozen of her books, but will think twice before picking up another.
She makes the two main characters people you really end up liking and rooting for, but in order to completely pull this off, she has to make the teen's mother into a complete stereotype. If we're going to end up cheering for the teen who's "come out," then we're supposed to hate her mother who kicks her out because of this announcement. Of course, the easiest way to do this is to make the mother a "fundamental Christian" who is as cardboard a character as they come and completely devoid of any emotion or sensible thought. As in,
Christian = intolerant, judgmental. Okay, that was an easy character to write. This just reinforces a nasty, negative stereotype that anyone who claims to be Christian is hateful to anyone who is gay/lesbian. Sorry, Catherine Ryan Hyde, I'm not going to let you off the hook that easy on this one. It makes me wonder if she actually KNOWS (in real life!) any genuine Christians because the people I know (myself included) who are Christ followers would NEVER act the way she had this character act. Of course, it was convenient for the plot, but sadly, all it does is reinforce negative stereotypes.

3.0 out of 5 stars CHRISTIAN BASHING
Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2020

I loved this book at first. Teen Molly is sweet and caring, baby Etta is beyond adorable and Brooke is admirable for trying together her life back on track in spite of her belligerent mother. But - then comes the Christian bashing. Molly’s mother is supposed to be a Christian, but she is cold and cruel, just heartless. And if that isn’t bad enough, her home is cluttered and neglected and the yard is unkempt. Why not just put horns on her head? I’m done with this author!

3.0 out of 5 stars An Easy Read But The Story Lacks Believability

This book has great reviews and I have enjoyed reading this author's other books but something just didn't work for me this time.

If you're happy to just lose yourself in an interesting story and don't get hung up on detail then you will probably enjoy this.

It's an interesting subject to tackle, the author did well telling the story from 2 different perspectives and it's a very easy read, but there were things that happened in this story that just didn't add up.

The different characters did or didn't do things that just seemed unrealistic to me. There were several opportunities for this story to come to a conclusion far sooner than it did. Obviously that's not the point as a story needs to be told, but if you're someone who's bugged by unrealistic detail this book may not be for you.
Rather than enjoying the book I found myself getting frustrated with it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Talented author, but not perfectly executed

Perhaps it was a mistake to have read four of this author's books in a row, but this, the fourth, was my least favorite. As I'd come to expect, the characters are relatable. However, as the story spiraled from a bad situation to worse into despair, I found the characters' cheerful explanations of what they were thinking and why they said a thing-- tedious. There was also something in the whole plot scenario that didn't quite make sense. I was glad, finally, for the hopeful resolution in the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enough with the inner dialogue
Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2021

I have enjoyed other books by this author but I think I am now seeing that her books are becoming too formulaic. One thing of note that is characteristic of her writing is her tendency to let the reader know all the thoughts of the main characters. The incessant inner dialogue tends to slow the story down too much for me. It's especially annoying when it comes to the younger characters. I get that she's trying to bring the reader inside their heads but enough already! This story was compelling but I could have done with far less of the blah blah blah inside Molly's head. Not sure if I'll be reading another book by this author any time soon.

I found the first 50+ pages drawn out And too long re the situation w with Molly and the child.
Omg. It had a good middle, but the last quarter had similar concerns. Hyde is one of my favorites. This book is a pass for me

I enjoyed this book. I finished it rather quickly. Most of her books have such intriguing characters that I’m drawn in. I can’t believe I haven’t read “pay it forward” yet. That is next on my hit list.

I was amazed by the account of Molly as she survived alone on the streets, but thought the story was drawn out with little in surprise to keep the reader wanting to finish the novel.

3.0 out of 5 stars It is like a gripping story you can’t put down that the author forgot to finish

This story gripped me from the beginning and I loved it, it took me through so many different emotions, and then it’s like the author got bored with it and just ended it. I was left with much to be desired.
