Solid Book to Prepare Kiddos For Well Visits
Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2017
This is another solid Barney book in terms of preparing children for a medical experience. This one didn't go into as much detail as the one which went over dentist's visits, but I really liked that the actual pictures of the items are used, including the otoscope. I think this has very real value for children who have conditions like Autism, as my son does. He takes everything very literally. And sometimes, illustrators of children's books use enough artistic license in their illustrations that it makes things a bit less recognizable for what they are.
I think the waiting room is shown as being way more kid utopian then Dr's offices are at this point in time, but I definitely like that it didn't show Baby Bop getting anything more then a sticker. That's accurate, and I really don't like it when children's books over promise the after visit reward.
The reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is that it doesn't go over vaccines, and that's a huge part of what young children need to be prepared for at yearly well visits. And often, it's one of the more upsetting parts. I think it's far too important a thing when it comes to managing expectations, and I don't think it should be left out of any book that aims to prepare a young child for a doctor's visit.
Overall though, this is a very solid book that has a great deal of value in preparing children for doctor's visits.
