Joseph McMoneagale remains a stalwart bedrock of the paranormal world and the conventional ethos, this making him a unicorn. And his unique military background provides the clear backdrop so useful to explaining the murky paranormal world, and especially to the uninitiated. Yet while Remote Viewing Secrets successfully illustrates precise protocol for remote viewing, precise definitions for remote viewing and the variables involved with it, excellent academic supportive works, methodological processes for undertaking a remote viewing and careful warnings against unrealistic expectations, it fails to delve deeply into how exactly a person is to perform the remote viewing function itself. And that is disappointing.

But perhaps in his silence about the specific details of conjuring the RV function, Joseph McMoneagale once again punctuates his status as the most trustworthy authority on the subject. For how can one actually explain a function that is entirely inexplicable.

Personally I feel incredibly lucky to have found this book. If you are on a quest in your life, to discover who you are and what you can do, there are certain things that will resonate with you at milestones on your journey. This book contains a great deal of straightforward information and advice to those who have experienced, would like to experience, or are interested in knowing more about remote viewing.
Remote viewing is different from almost any of the other "psychic phenomena" out there. (Personally I disdain the word "psychic", but alas the alternative words are often worse). There seems to be a natural, innate ability in most people to spontaneously form feelings and images with respect to never-before-seen targets. Of course this talent varies, but at least it's a lot easier than bending spoons or levitating saltshakers.
About 15 years ago I read a book by Russell Targ and Keith Harary called "The Mind Race" which discussed the remote viewing work being done at SRI (Stanford Research Institute). The book went into a great deal of detail about how the experiments were set up and carried out. These protocols, it turns out, are the second ingredient that sets remote viewing apart. Not only is it do-able by most of us, but it can actually be done with some degree of scientific method (which to the general public means integrity).
Contrast this with dowsing, for example. Dowsing does work, but spending several years around the dowsing community while trying to maintain some semblance of objectivity will reveal a general propensity for self-delusion among its practitioners. This is not to say they're trying to defraud anyone - most are very sincere people - it's more likely that without the proper controls it's just too easy to fool yourself.
That is what happens when there are not stringent protocols applied to the methods. The desire for success begins to corrupt the whole process. The wonderful thing about remote viewing experiments constrained by protocols is that they produce RESULTS THAT ARE MEASURABLE. This, in turn, yields a validation of the entire process and its participants. Not to say that it doesn't have its share of detractors.
I personally think that we have not even scratched the surface of RV. Human consciousness is dependent on belief systems (believing is seeing), and I think that the methods and protocols employed in RV are going to allow it to break through a critical barrier that will encourage newcomers to look forward towards fantastic possibilities, as opposed to constantly checking over their shoulders for the Reality Police. No matter how much of an independent spirit someone may be, one can tread water only so long in the Sea of Uncertainty.
Mr. McMoneagle suggests considering the journey into RV as stages of martial arts training, and espouses the values of Zen discipline. It is said that one cannot understand Zen without taking up one of the Zen arts as a vehicle for attaining wisdom. RV could be such an art, creating a two-way street of advancement in both the art of RV and the path to enlightenment.
In light of this, may I recommend two excellent texts:
"Zen In The Art Of Archery" by Eugen Herrigel, and
"The Unfettered Mind: Writings of the Zen Master to the Sword Master" by Takuan Soho
To speculate on how imaging might work and how all things are connected (and just plain fun to read):
"The Holographic Universe" by Michael Talbot
Also, to speed-dial your ability to focus and visualize, attending a Silva Mind Control seminar might prove incredibly valuable. One weekend at the Basic will teach you a lifetime's worth of skills. I took the seminars way back when Jose Silva was still teaching some of them himself, so I don't know whether they're still available. You can't really learn the subtleties of the self-hypnosis and mental projection skills from the books, though they're better than nothing.
Best of luck to you!

Joseph McMoneagle has written an important book for anyone who is serious about remote viewing.

Included are drawings showing the receptive skill expected at the different levels of remote viewing.
The author points out the importance of being in the right state of mind and explains what is meant by that.
He tells us what RV is best suited for and what it cannot be relied upon to do.

He explains the traits that make a good remote viewer and who should not be a remote viewer.
He goes into great detail about different protocols and methods used in RV.

He describes some disciplines that seem to help support the mental control needed to do RV: lucid dreaming, out of body travel, relaxation, meditation and hypnosis.

He addresses ethics in regards to RV and cautions about three common frauds in the paranormal arena: deliberate fraud, accidental fraud and self-delusion.

He goes over the good and bad practices when developing your RV talent.
He explains his views on how RV information might be received and how best to analyze and record it.

There are photographic examples of what makes a good 'target'.
He gives recommendations about training with emphasis on reasonable expectations, and tells us how to set up our own training schedule.

While McMoneagle's approach is heavy on protocol, he also has a lot of encouraging words for anyone who is naturally drawn to remote viewing.

I consider 3 stars 'good' and 4 stars 'very good'.
A book would have to be exceptional to get 5 stars from me.

Based on the weight of the reviews and with the assumption that Joseph McMoneagle possessed some insight into remote viewing, I purchased this book out of curiosity. Given McMoneagle's affiliation with the STARGATE project (mentioned numerous times in the book), and various research efforts of the U.S. government, my gullibility got the better of me.
McMoneagle's book is a very interesting read, but not really informative in a how-to sense. This book is doesn't even mention any statistics on the effectiveness of any experiments, just a wordy anecdote here or there. Later, I found out why -- it wasn't until I plowed through the book that I learned that the CIA's retroactive review of the STARGATE program pointed out that the government psychics were only accurate about 15 percent of the time.
McMoneagle writes authoritatively on the subject, and he seems to have a dedicated following (just read the reviews here). He discusses protocols, methods, and ethics, without really giving away anything substantial, but leaves a lot unstated. If you are a cynic, you will remain so; if you are a believer, you will believe more. He even mentions peripherally: remote viewing in healing, dowsing, channeling, tarot cards, crystal gazing.
McMoneagle even includes two research papers (Appendix B, and C), with statistical formulas and technical graphs. To the uneducated, it would appear as a tacit and scientific endorsement of the validity of remote viewing. Considering the multi-million dollar investment, I expected a more compelling look at the topic.
I couldn't help but be chagrined with several decades or research a multi-million dollar investment in researching paranormal phenomena, and seeing child-like drawings produced during "training".
If you are a cynic or just open-minded, this book will not change your mind. Save your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was well written and gave a good scientific framework in which to explain the subject

This book was well written and gave a good scientific framework in which to explain the subject. I usually find "psychic" stuff hard to swallow because there is not enough explanation and too much presumption. This is a lot more logical and I think, also helps to provide a framework for testing reality in life itself. You could say that it was spiritual on many levels depending on how far you want to go. The book also explains the limitations which is an important aspect in any of this type of work and so I praise the author for grounding us in physical reality at every stage of the book. Remote Viewing is hard work and just like everything else, if you wish to get good at it, requires persistence and time.

If you are interested in the nuts and bolts of remote viewing you need to read this book. It contains a huge amount of information on the protocols and procedures necessary for "successful" remote viewing sessions. While McMoneagle doesn't actually tell the reader how to do remote viewing, his breadth of experience is apparent in this detailed tome. Both beginning and experienced remote viewers will find useful tidbits and, indeed, "secrets" of the trade within these chapters. Everything from the selection of targets to the effects of sidereal time on viewing performance are covered here. Of course, every viewer, government-trained or otherwise, has their particular biases and superstitions about the "right" way to do remote viewing and McMoneagle is no exception. But given his lengthly experience and proven track record in so many scientific and televised demonstrations, it would be wise for viewers and intuitives of all persuasions to take heed and give his perspectives and suggestions some serious consideration. (Dr. Simeon Hein is the author of Opening Minds: A Journey of Extraordinary Encounters, Crop Circles, and Resonance (Mount Baldy Press, Inc., 2002).)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Remote Viewing Book!

During the summer of 2006, I was trained by a person (ex-military) who had been a part of the Stargate project during the cold war era. He taught a group of us some of the same techniques that Joseph mentions in his book. Hand drawings, molding clay images based on sensing and other modalities were all used to correctly identify targets around the world. Most were not government sanctioned or considered to be official targets by any means but, as a group of around 20 people, we were able to identify locations through commonly recognized images, thoughts, smells, temperatures, tastes, sounds, etc. Josephs book is well written and most assuredly based on actual experiences. One special note: When RVing is used to attain higher truths, rescues and other humanitarian interests, all went well. I would caution anyone going into this thinking that they would be able to use these techniques for personal gain .

The author who was involved in military applications of 'remote viewing' spends more time explaining why they disregard so much information etc than he does explaining how things are done. In fact, due to their need to make sure the results always followed Scientific Protocol the book never really seemed to get to the point in the first 3/4's of the book and my wife didn't bother to finish it. She found the book 'Psychic Tarot' much more helpful & covered the application of the techniques much better without unrealistic scientific expectations that are prominent in this book. My wife originally bought the book because she read the author claimed that any one could learn to do 'remote viewing' without any previous psychic abilities showing themselves. However, during the course of reading the book she found the opposite opinion of the author to be true. It basically came across that most of the work the military did regarding this came to the conclusion that the results were too vague and did not live up to expectations (scientific expectations of solid consistent methods to acquire identical results).
