4.0 out of 5 starswhat's not to love?
Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2020
I'm going to give you the recommendation I received from a friend to start reading The Iron Druid Chronicles "red-haired druid, Irish wolfhound, witches, werewolves, vampires, and Nordic gods. The books aren't boring!"

If you're thinking about buying book 4 you've obviously bought into all that. In this book I enjoyed the addition of rich indigenous myths of the American southwest. There are enough twists to keep you guessing what the core characters of Atticus, Granuaile, and Oberon. If you've not yet fallen in love with the idea of being bonded to your own wolfhound this volume will clinch it.

3.0 out of 5 starsInauthentic characterization
Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2021
I'm just annoyed that his supposed main character trait is paranoia, and yet every single book is him running headlong into some avoidable danger without caution or forethought.

In this book he starts walking home in a dark desert with two supernatural hunters after him, instead of pulling out his cell phone (or budgeting his time better). He also gets attacked on the fourth floor of a hotel, why didn't he try for a ground floor room so he's closer to his source of power, and why didn't he bother to put up any wards? If his paranoia is the only reason he's survived this long, it's just a thin cover for plot armor.

Also, I'd like an explanation for why he can absorb energy from the earth but somehow cobblestone acts as a buffer.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK story, not nearly as good as his previous books

I am a definite fan of the Iron Druid works so far, but found that this one wasn't up to snuff with the previous books. I am hoping that some of the events from this book will be really important in future books ( I know they are already out, I just haven't had the opportunity yet to read them) because I didn't feel that this story really advanced out understanding of Atticus and his apprentice(I can't spell her name from memory). Oberon was still his wise-cracking self, always a favorite part of the stories. I felt each of the previous stories advanced our understanding of Atticus, and hoping we get back to that soon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kills Gods, his Dogs a genius, He's the last Druid

Slightly more erudite than just pushing buttons though, or so I'm assuming because I've never gotten into the game playing thing, so I'm giving it a great deal of credit here. But certainly, just as in reading, the imagination can be engaged in whatever you're doing. But this writer gives any nerd with no life everything he could possibly want, written in the first person, a character who is simply superior to every other living creature around, while remaining remarkably modest, he vanquishes even Some in the pantheon of the Gods, that apparently need to be vanquished anyway. His best friend is a dog, with whom, (like everyone else) he has perfect communication and the best and most satisfying relationship. This relationship is only slightly challenged by the relationships he shares with his lawyer (an ancient vampire) and his other lawyer (a werewolf), and all of the Goddesses, or Goddesslike women he finds the time to bed, wilst not slaying bad guys, or preparing to slay them. Creepy right? To only have a dog and 2 morphing monster lawyers as your best friends? Well he's the only true Druid left in the world, and he's ancient, so I guess it's appropriate. Like so much of what's popular nowadays, we are asked to suspend more and more of our disbelief. What's actually true isn't quite fantastic enough for us, I suppose. But hey, don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing the genre. I've long been a huge Sci-Fi fan. I guess I like my Science a little more solid, and my fantasy a little less frilly. But um, I also talked to my dogs a lot too. But they just were never Polyslabs, like this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun easy read

Fun easy read! I needed a good transition book to shake off the last book I read and this one didn't disappoint. Always fun to see an incarnation of Coyote and the troubles he gets people into. It was also good to see Atticus in a new setting with mostly new characters. I'm interested to see where they go from here.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tired of PC

I am tired of authors trying to shove their political agenda down my throat. Such as coal is evil even though it keeps hundreds of thousands of people from freezing to deal each year. Plus his view that it is ok to be racist against whites and other races can do no wrong.

I've read all 4 books in this series to date. I continued reading even after not loving the last one. This one measured up for me, and kept me interested in these characters, specifically Atticus and Oberon.

I enjoyed the smaller scale and focus of this book, not near as many mythical characters in this one. Just a better job all around.

definitely will continue reading this series, but not on my "must buy as soon as available" list. I'll get around to it when I get around to it but will read further.

3.0 out of 5 stars The first three books were great; this one, not so much

I agree with some of the other reviewers that this book seemed forced, like an editor was riding the author's back (I think the publication had been delayed at least once). If that's the case, it's a shame. The narrative is choppy in places and the endless details about the magic system get tedious. Although I like Oberon, his IQ seems to bounce all over the place from Dumb Dog obsessed with sausage to Philosopher Dog dropping tidbits of wisdom and insight. All that said, I'm still looking forward to book five.

3.0 out of 5 stars Coyote Tricked With Big Splashes of Environmentalism
Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2013

Usually Kevin has a great story with plenty of humor thrown in. I have to say was more disappointed as the story line and lots of comments show that the author is a big Socialist with a humongous environmentalist streak showing through. Comments like his novice saying her douche bag dad works for big oil and likes cheating and destroying people making a big profit. It didn't stop there as Atticus takes delight in stopping coal mining as part of his deal with the elemental to move gold for Coyote. Makes me think he is a big supporter of Obama and truly has no idea about energy consumption and that solar and wind just cant cut it as a competitive source of power.

I am so tired of hearing about evil people in oil and evil people who work in the energy sector from the left. We are being bombarded from the left and the Hollywood elite to hate normal working people who essentially provide us our energy and power. Also everything we use from clothes to ipads are from fossil fuels. We should stop demonizing the producers and venerating the lazy people who don't work for or earn anything.

I have enjoyed his previous novels and have recommended him but am truly hoping this is not a theme he will pursue in his future stories. Could only give it 3 stars due to the political thoughts played out in the story. He still had good action and some funny humor strewn in.

Kevin is a good solid writer, nicely wry, beautifully detailed, but his books too often seem to be the same dressing on a different salad. Entertaining, and fun, a nice snack for the reader.

I'm finding that the series is building up a lot of framework and structure for this world the events take place in, but I worry that the ultimate consequences of some of the choices made have not been thought far enough ahead.
