How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsBrilliant collection of tools you can use to survive-- and even thrive-- through life challenges
Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2018
I love this book! In Resilience, Linda Graham offers a wonderful variety of short practices you can use to maintain your emotional equilibrium during any life stress or crisis. Combining elements of mindfulness, imagery, and movement-- the practices are both enjoyable and easy to implement in the middle of a busy day. Linda also breaks the tools into categories so they are easy to find right when you need them. If you need something to help you calm physical anxiety-- you can find tools in her somatic intelligence chapter. If you're overwhelmed with anger, guilt, or negative thoughts-- she's got sections for that. Need something to help you in a relationship during stress? -- she's got a chapter for that with practices that you and a loved one can even do together.

Linda's also assembled the practices into sections based on the intensity of stress or crisis you are in. For example, when it's a mild stressor, it's easier for us to access the rational brain and adjust our thoughts to improve how we're feeling. But, when you're in a devastating, overwhelming situation, it's hard to think clearly and our energy can be low. In situations like this, it's best to use easy practices that help you comfort yourself and don't demand much energy or thinking. With her keen insight into the way the brain functions under stress, Linda understands this and shows you how to adapt the tools according to your needs.

Last, Linda helps you understand how each of these practices can actually strengthen your brain and nervous system's capacity for resilience. These practices don't just help you feel better in the moment, they can literally help you create new neuropathways in your brain that can mitigate anxiety and depression. I'm a therapist who has used Linda's tools and can attest to their effectiveness in calming, uplifting, and reassuring people during tough times. This is really a book that everyone should have on their book shelves. A brilliant collection of tools you can use to survive-- and even thrive-- through any life challenge.

I thought this book would be more of a workbook—more guided. Rather it’s just a dump of 130 exercises and good luck. You’d think she’d put together some sort of calendar about when/how often these exercises are to be performed. Do they all need to be performed? Once you do all or some do you do them for life? Can you skip a chapter? Obnoxious book.

I saw an hour lecture from this aurthor and was impressed. I got the book out of the library and knew I had to have it. This book is well-organized. It explains resilience and why it is important in layman's terms. The exercises are easy to understand and practice. I've already seen improvement in the way I handle stress. Resilience needs to be taught in schools. It would help us all function better. I told my friend who is a doctor of occupational therapy & she was so impressed she uses it in her work and she's teaching it to her children.

What a gift to have such a trustworthy guide on this journey of strengthening resilience. Linda Graham has dedicated herself to bringing forth research and resources that actually deliver what is promised. Her book is well-organized and easy to access for quick inspiration or to guide clinicians.
Linda's voice is a steady light in the darkness: We can do this!

Henry Reed
5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and authoritative... a useful manual
Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2018
Can you hold two opposing thoughts in your mind at the same time? "I'm feeling so behind right now. I'm right on schedule!" It was the psychiatrist Carl Jung who noted that it was a critical skill in growing consciousness to be able to hold opposing thoughts together in the mind. The reconciliation of the opposites was a universal principle that Jung found particularly relevant and crucial. Buddha claimed that the main reason for unhappiness was attachment. Since reality is in constant creative flux, to be attached to a particular state of affairs is asking for disappointment. Yet we are hard-wired to seek patterns and meaning, and thus are set up by our biology toward favoring attachment over flow, especially under duress. And since life is change, we are all subject to loss, stress, and the potential psychological fallout. Being able to "bounce back" after a fall, therefore, requires both the acceptance of the pain of loss and the affirmation of the ability to grow anew.

"Resilience" is the name Positive Psychology gives to that ability to bounce back. If ever there was a book that put together all that we know so far about this invaluable human skill, with many exercises to develop it, this new book by Linda Graham, M.F.T., will be an important reference for some time. It's a very comprehensive treatment, taking systematic steps to incorporate the latest research on brain functioning and how it adapts to stress, and to our own thoughts. It covers mindfulness meditation, of course, but also explains why that practice is so important to resilience. Understanding the mechanisms allows then the creation of many derivative exercises to make progress in reducing the negative impact of trauma and increasing the motivational impact of positive psychology methodologies.

One of the things that I particularly admired about the author's treatment of the subject was the go slow and easy approach, so as not to create overwhelm and sabatoge the healing process. Just as important is the holistic approach she prescribes, covering the five dimensions of knowing: somatic intelligence (including body tools like breathing), emotional intelligence (including mindfulness and empathy), relational intelligence (such as acceptance), and reflective intelligence (such as choosing). Going slow, covering the bases, a process evolves, new perceptions, new habits develop. Reading her description of the process inspires the optimism it requires to make it work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent help for facing difficulties

Ms. Graham does an excellent job of simplifying scientific words and ideas into layman’s language. This treasure trove of practical exercises, backed up by scientific evidence, aids one in learning to cope with those difficult times everyone faces. Ms. Graham includes ideas for wobbles—the mail was late—to too much—grief, unending illness, job loss. Be prepared to work, though, to get the most help from Resilience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful practices that can be life changing
Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2019
While going through an extremely difficult time in my life, I've found this book very helpful. The review by Courtney Armstrong, below, is an excellent description of the tools offered in the book and how it's organized. The chapter on self-acceptance and an inner secure base has been most helpful for me. From these practices I developed a powerful inner strength to draw upon, a source of self-reliance, I'd never had before, when dealing with difficulties. The way I have used the book is to read it each morning before meditation, try one of the practices, then I often found it deepened my meditation by reflecting on something I learned. My book is filled with stickies labeling the various tools I found most helpful to use over and over. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book will enable you to thrive!

The reason I added this shot of my dog is that this book will enable you to thrive. As a Psychotherapist and Minister of over 34 years, I have not found many books that speak to me or inspire me. That is, I have done a HUGE amount of individual work and I have many certifications and 3 degrees.
Linda's words, her consciousness, her advanced awareness are channeled in this book in a lovely and understandable way. I did read the other reviews and I do not agree. She offers these exercises so that there is something for everyone but each one is important. As a teacher of meditation and a minister that leads a lot of guided visualization in my work, I was JOYFULLY surprised that the exercises in the book were great and highly beneficial for me.
I would highly recommend this book whether you are someone who wants to learn more to help clients or a person who is going through a rough time. I find myself in both camps and I took her book on a badly needed retreat and actually, doing the exercises in the section on emotions heled me in an amazing way. Click to buy that book today!
