How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsSmall town, big expectations

Have you ever known a woman who lives in a marriage with a man who beats her, and hurts the kids? One of these four stories, Sarah Smiles, is the vigilante-Justice answer to that awful situation. It's a delicious, impossible revenge fantasy. Anne DeWitt, high school principal, is in her second career, and she wants her North Carolina school to shine. She'll make it happen. Bad behavior by the kids, bad parenting, bad coaching. . . none of that nonsense flies under her radar. Test scores are improving, her high standards are making a difference, and people who interfere with Anne would regret it if they lived to think about it. What fun to read about a take-charge, no-apologies woman and her public school empire.

3.0 out of 5 starsThese are horror stories
Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2019
After my initial reading and unimpressed review of Small Kingdoms, I went back and read through the stories again. It was during the second reading I realized what really bothered me about the collection. Not only did I still find the characters unlikeable, but I realized how truly evil the main character was. All intervening actions taken were for the benefit of the reputation of the school, none were for the benefit of the people being affected by bad situations. The potential abuse of a mentally challenged girl by a bully star sports player, the perceived physical abuse of a showcase high-test-scoring girl by her parent, the stalking and loss of respect for the assassin principal . . . all situations resolved to prevent the shiny image of the high school from being tarnished. The sexual abuse of a non-entity student is dismissed as irrelevant to the assassin principal’s mission . . . These scenarios are too close to what happens in real life K-12 situations (without the actual killings) to be anything but classified as “horror,” and are not what I look for in escape fantasy entertainment.

Anne DeWitt (Twyla Burnside) is a fascinating character. As a high school principal, she takes care of "little" problems before they become larger ones, always with the best interests of her school and her students in mind. I really hope there are more of these stories!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good mystery story

I love the way Charlaine Harris writes. I thought this story was not quite as good as the other Charlaine Harris books. It is, however, apparently, a wrap up of some loose ends from several other series of these books and should be read as such. That said, this book is good reading that stands on its own. Enjoy!

Amazing characters, interesting situations , with some suprising plot twists. If you haven't read Miss Harris before you have missed a master at her craft. Having read almost everything
She has written I will highly recommend her work to anybody who would care to take the plunge.

I enjoy Charlaine's characters very much and get committed to them.
Anne was very unusual and fun to discover. Hard to have character flaws when her whole life was so controlled and working towards her version of perfection. Really fascinating and I was slightly terrified with how problems are resolved. Very entertaining.

Not a paranormal, but still a great read for fans of Charlaine Harris. I enjoyed the plotting of the characters, the manipulation, and the subterfuge. The lead character is not as retired as she seems. A great, fun read. Dark but not too dark!

I love all of Charlaine Harris books. This one did not disappoint. I do wonder if there will be more? Perhaps a full book or even just another section of short stories? One can hope!

These stories remind me why I loved the Sookie Stackhouse books and Chaplains Harris' inventive mind. I'd love to see these characters develop into a new series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, quick read

Two well trained psychopaths clean up small grubby messes to protect their new little identities. Problem is, every single person in these stories seems cardboard like. Even the protagonist and the partner-of-convenience are pretty frozen. They don't interact with anyone much, even each other. The rest are just props.
