I love this series, it has a plot, romance is romance not thinly veiling soft core porn, by that I mean the love scenes are alluded to mostly, not played out thrust by thrust over pages and pages, then itโ€™s back to the actual story, there are heroes and villains and at the heart a well thought out main character who struggles to overcome a horrifying past and grow into a badass warrior woman while maintaining her core integrity and innocent humor.

I had high hopes for this book/series. I even bought it on audible. Unfortunately, I was left disappointed. It was weird and confusing. Sam was a walking disaster. She was weak, had massive TSTL tendencies, zero business sense (its ridiculous that the bar even works, given how ridiculously low staffed it is and no mention of upkeep/real work), and my biggest pet peeve, Sam needed rescuing for majority of this book. She couldn't save herself in 99% of the situations she put herself in. How many times do you need to leave your home alone, at night, after being attacked over and over again? Plus, the women being brutally murdered? Forgotten about as quickly as they were thrown into the story. I felt zero chemistry between Sam and Clive, and I wasn't even drawn into the story. A mysterious past that only showed to highlight how ignorant Sam is about herself and the world she lives in. Clive is some rich vampire willing to pay for everything and is automatically obsessed with Sam, which felt lame. So much of this book falls on cliches and obvious tropes. I know that in a couple of days nothing about this book will stand out. Utterly forgettable.

I still give this 2.5 stars rounded up to 3, purely because the cover is great, and the writing isn't bad. It's the story itself I didn't like.

I downloaded The Slaughtered Lamb Bookstore and Bar, book 1 of the Sam Quinn series, as a free ebook from Amazon. Oh my goodness, this was such a wonderful read. Fast paced, unusual and well-crafted characters, excellent plot development, and great writing style. What makes the story so interesting is the sense of community between the characters. Sam has a strong support group, which is fortunate as she always seems to be in trouble. The remainder of the books are priced above my budget (I usually go with Kindle Unlimited), but I'm seriously considering splurging.over the next couple months.

Having read many urban fantasy novels I feel this one is unique in its own way.
The heroine is an assault survivor, a young, smart and strong person with scars, physical and mental. This is not just a back story, however. We see her potential and the way her trauma cripples her. During the book she starts to see this as well and makes progress healing, realising her own strength and building her self esteem. Those experiences are central to the book and are handled well, while maybe the speed of the main character's recovery is a bit on the optimistic side (but then the book takes place 7 years after the actual attack).
There is romance. The love interest's portrayal and the way he shows empathy and admiration for the heroine makes him very likeable, which is not always the case with novels of the genre. And he has a sense of humour. Truly well done.
The supernatural world is interesting, locations are described vividly, there is not too much exposition, the book is action packed and a thrilling read.
Now to the flaws. At times there is too much action which lessens the impact (did there need to be so many attempts at one of the characters' life? Half the number would have been enough to create an atmosphere of danger). Some things happen offscreen and it might have been better to streamline what was shown and then maybe delve more into the vampire politics we are told happen at the same time.
I also wish the secondary characters were given a better introduction, at the beginning it was quite hard to tell them apart, their relationship with the heroine could have been explained a bit better too (who is a friend, who is a colleague, why is this person rescuing the heroine when apparently he has no ties to her?). The second half of the book seemed more coherent.
So while it's not perfect I liked this book very much, it was a fun read, the characters grew on me and I cannot wait for the next one.

I donโ€™t know who this author is or where they came from, but she just became one of the few who I am willing to trust will write a good story and preorder books from. You need to read this book, it was awesome.
Great story, great characters. I donโ€™t want to give anything away so I will just say I was hooked and read the book in one day (staying up late reading long past bedtime to know what happens lol).
The characters were very likable and even not having been through the main characters experiences, you canโ€™t help but relate to her. You feel invested in what is happening to her and you like her friends. And of course the lead guy is dreamy. I do hope we get to see/learn more of his and the other side characters histories to deepen their characters in the next books.
My only qualm is it felt like she forced this imaginary world to be in San Francisco instead of just letting it be a new world. The world she created only detailed the magical side of things so I never could fully figure out if humans didnโ€™t know about them or not. Is this supposed to be our Earth and magic users are hidden from our site? Is it an alternate Earth where people know about magic? How much do they know about it? How long have they known about it? I really wish she had spent even one paragraph to tell us this (think Mercy Thompson, it takes place in our world and we are told that a while ago the Fae came out of hiding but the rest of the magic users are still hidden from humans. BAM you know itโ€™s our world, our histories, itโ€™s just diverging from us with this story as magic is introduced into our human world)
Other than that I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone who wants to read a book series with a strong female heroine.

I really, really, really wanted to like this book. The premise was so promising! Alas, I couldn't.

I love when a book is action packed, but this was too much. The poor MC couldn't go more than several hours without getting her skull cracked. And I felt so confused when we'd shift into an attack. The first one merging from memories to nightmares to psychic attack. I had no flipping clue what was happening until it finish and it was summarized for another character.

In the first chapter, the MC debates the evolution of zombies in hollywood which turns into a smartly disguised diatribe in the evolution of women. I loved that scene. She was very much a sarcastic, witty, grown up woman. The rest of the book, she comes across immature and young. Perhaps a side effect of her innocence and withdrawal from people, but it was so potent that I kept seeing her as a young teen instead of a 24 year old woman.

What really clinched it for me though? Sexy, powerful, dark, and broody vamp, Clive, telling her "Give us a kiss, luv" in a cockney accent while they're going to "second base".

I almost didn't read this book due to a few reviews I read before buying it. Yes, I decided to buy the actual paperback over going with the kindle version, and I am definitely glad I did. I really enjoyed this one and it will be joining my shelf of keepers!

There are triggering moments of violence against women in this one though, so if you aren't able to handle that kind of content, then this book is definitely not for you. It is nowhere near as bad as a couple of the reviews I read made it out to be.

Yes, there are moments that Sam did some really stupid things and put herself in danger, but as you read and get further into the story you find out the whys and more of why certain things happened.

I fully loved that even though Sam starts out as a victim in the beginning and can't seem to even take care of herself she eventually gets a grip on herself and stops acting like a victim and takes charge of her life and starts defending herself and starts becoming the strong female that she has the capability of being.

I fully recommend this book and am very much on pins and needles waiting for book two to arrive!

I read a LOT, so when I say a series Stands out, take that into consideration. I have read the entire Series to Date and my only regret is I have to wait till October for Book 5. They have been so enjoyable that I'll likely read the first 4 again so I can flow directly into book 5 when it comes out. The Characters (especially the main character "Sam") are fully fleshed out and you come to truly care about them all. Sam has had to deal with a lot and it's inspiring to see her overcome the things life has thrown at her and still continue to be a kind person. As I said I read a LOT and don't often take the time to write a review, so take that for what it's worth. All my best and a big thanks to the Author. PLEASE Write More!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Worldbuilding and Wonderful Main Character

I really enjoyed this urban fantasy title that is the first of a (currently) four book series. Sam Quinn is a werewolf, bar owner, and book nerd.

Sam was attacked when she was seventeen and brutalized which is when she first became a werewolf. She had recently lost her mother and was spending time with an uncle she didn't know who was also a werewolf.

After the attack, Sam fled to San Francisco where she is the only werewolf. She has gathered a group of friends including vampires, wicche, demons, and other supernatural types. Now, though, seven years later, she has suddenly become a magnet for people who want to kill her.

Luckily, Clive who is the head of the local vampire nocturne, has her back. They are building a relationship that is veering toward the romantic as Sam gradually gets over the violence in her past.

I loved Sam. She's a book nerd and Tolkien fan. I loved that Clive turned a ballroom into a library - that Sam compares to the Beasts - in order to please her. I liked the worldbuilding and the fast-paced plot with lots of exciting action.

20% into this book I knew I was in love. So much so that I legit bought the next four (even the unreleased one).

Sam is just tryin to get thru life after being attacked when she was younger. A witch (wicche) and a half-demon (I LOVE Dave!!) are her besties but someone is still after her. The world-building was good, I like the side characters (Stheno & George) and despite a few misshaps that make you want to smack Sam, you eventually get to love her. She's not just a girl who everyone has to save - tho she does get help and she eventually figures out her own life. It's an good read, nice sexytimes, very funny and I couldn't put it down.
