From six novellas to strong unified start of the Murphy’s Lawless saga
Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2020
This very large anthology collects the six previously published novellas and adds a substantial wealth of background that connects how Rodger Y. Murphy, commander of the forlorn hope on R’bak, attempts to use his limited resources. Originally introduced in a small section at the start of the first novella, Murphy’s role is greatly expanded and his interactions with the focus characters of the novellas becomes a focus in the attempt to weave the stories into a coherent single narrative.
Several of the novellas remain almost almost untouched beyond the connective material which surrounds them while others are expanded to include more interaction with the characters from other novellas. Timeline issues are resolved and you begin to see how a very small group of displaced and struggling individuals come together to implement change on R’bak in both a personal and a worldwide manner.
In a couple of places additional chapters or replacement chapters have been added to the original novellas in an almost seamless way. One of my least favorite novellas was made much stronger in this manner. In all, this new “remastered” version takes what was a group of six strong novellas and fuses them together into a single tightly woven novel with multiple viewpoints of a change in the destiny of a world that is only just beginning.
