5.0 out of 5 starsA Countdown To Murder
Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2018
This is a serial killer book. This particular serial killer considers himself an artist. He spend hours of time making his victim part of a Rubens painting. Hence the nickname. This killer is called Rubens. He also leaves a countdown clock counting down to the time he will murder the next victim. And he leaves a clue by the murder scene telling who his next victim is. He commits four murders then disappears for a few years, then he surfaces again in a different city and the cycle begins again. I don't know that real serial killers have such elaborate rituals but it makes for a very interesting story. This time Rubens has surfaced in Washington DC. And this time he will be challenging two very smart, savvy, and experienced detectives, Mac McRyan and Dara Wire.

This was an exciting and frightening book. It was quite a chase with the clock running and not a single sighting ever of Rubens. Mac decided that while the police chased down the murderer in the conventional way, he and his group had to concentrate on the how. How does he choose his victims? How does he stay so hidden? And they begin to understand how he operates. Really an interesting and well thought-out book. I highly recommend it. Get the book and spend an evening with a serial killer.

Don't appreciate the political references and sneaky put-downs. The author is making his personal political agenda through his books. I don't appreciate the implications that he makes that other party affiliations are the bad guys.

3.0 out of 5 stars Story line good, characters a little boring.

The idea of the story was good. Some twists with suspense as the FBI closes in. I liked the story line, but the characters could have been better developed. The lead guy "Mac" did all the thinking, his partner, a woman named "Dara Wire" came across not so well. Where he was the hard working, always thinking and trying to solve the case, she came across as the lazy (complaining about starting the day too early), not one to do investigating on her own, but always questioning him about why he thought his lead could be the right answer. She came across annoying and less qualified to be partnered up with him. Again, the idea of this story was clever and suspenseful, but the characters were a little boring.

The characters are getting stale.
Mac is always too good to be true and so arrogant that I don't think he could function in a police organization.
This plot was ok but the ending was very obvious and not well written.
Kind of a ho hum ending.
Ok for a long plane trip but not much more

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first few

A little too far fledged to believe. I read it to the 85% mark then started to lose interest, waited two weeks and came back it. Not sure I will bother with the sequel.

...from the other books in the series. I didn't like it as much.

But to be fair, it was me and not the book. It is gets into the head of a psycho killer and that disturbs me to no end.

The story is well written with twists and turns, giving who done it clues. Then the hook sets that throws in a major "What the ..." that pushes you ahead into the story line.

This book is much darker than the others in the series. I agree with other reviewer fans that missed the Minneapolis settings.

If or when, as the ending hints, there is a follow-up to this story I think I'll pass.

Worth the read. It has been awhile since I read a book that actually made me want to get back to it and see what was happening next.

First half of the book is boring as hell, the second half is kind of like the past books. I figured out the second killer long before the book told you. The author should step back and have him move home. These sensational plots are not realistic.
