5.0 out of 5 starsTamera Alexander At Her Best!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 27, 2014
I own every single one of Tamera Alexander's books. She writes well and I've loved everyone. But this one....it's her absolute best! All 480 pages were just terrific.

Eleanor Braddock is nearly 30, plain and has nothing to offer in the marriage market. Her father is ill and she accepts her Aunt Adelicia Acklin's offer to come live with her at Belmont Mansion. Eleanor has no interest in the little teas and parties her aunt has planned for her, but feels she must consent since she is living off her aunt's charity. Her heart lies elsewhere, but she is doomed to disappointment. Her dream does not ever seem it will come true.

Marcus Geoffrey is hiding a secret, a very deep secret. He can't risk anyone knowing this secret, either. Marcus's passion is for nature and architecture and he is indeed talented in this area. Things just don't seem to cooperate for his dream, either.

Eleanor and Marcus begin work on a widow and children's home but they can't seem to agree on everything. They begin to develop feelings for one another but Eleanor knows her aunt will never approve of this. Besides, Marcus is not free. Or is he?

Tamera Alexander has a way of creating characters that seem so real they nearly jump off the pages. This book was so rich and full, like nothing I'd ever read. I cherished every sentence.

This book is Christian fiction and a romance. Some Christian fiction authors push the envelope way too far to remain a clean novel. Tamera Alexander never does that. She manages to create romance just with a conversation. I loved that this book was clean but still romantic.

Also, in the spiritual realm, the reader learns that what we want and long for and know is best for us is not always God's best for us. Instead, He gives us far richer dreams that we ever even dreamed of. (Ephesians 3:20.) It was wonderful to watch Eleanor and Marcus discover this. God blessed them with HIS plans for them far more than they wanted themselves. God's good like that.

I ached for these two as they suffered with their plans being cast down. I ached for them as they realized they could not ever realize their hopes with each other. But I also rejoice and yes, wept, with them as God blessed them in so many little ways throughout this book.

I wanted to read quickly to finish this book, but I tried to savor it as it should be savored. I know that when I pick up a Tamera Alexander book, I'm in for a treat. And her books always minister to me in some way. Never fails. Now I have to wait another year to read another of her good books.

This book is worth every penny and every moment spent reading.

I truly love all of the books by Tamera Alexander. This is the second book in A Belmont Mansion series.
Beauty So Rare is a good read but not her best. I found that it moved rather slowly and there didn't seem to be much of a climactic point in the book. The main characters were nicely fleshed out but I would have liked to know more about the story behind the immigrant mom and son (perhaps it's in the next book?).
I will look forward to her next book because this is the only novel of hers I have been disappointed with.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first of Tamara Alexander's books I have read

Beauty So Rare is a Belmont mansion novel, book #2 by Tamera Alexander. This is a post-Civil War novel set in Nashville, Tennessee. Tamara has created a plot that has lots of twists and turns and in which the characters come to life. This makes the book very easy to read and very hard to put down.
Eleanor (Ellie) Braddock is forced to sell her family home and bring her father to Nashville to the Insane Asylum to try to get him some help. He is losing his memory (Alzheimer’s most likely) and she can no longer help him. Her mother has died and her brother Teddy was killed in the war. She takes refuge with her Aunt Adelicia Cheatham at Belmont. Ellie’s dream is to become a chef and own a restaurant. To this end, she has made a three month contract on a building she had never seen. She has given up on the idea of marriage but with the help of her aunt, finds herself engaged to Lawrence Hochley.
Adelicia Cheatham is a wealthy society lady and every influential in Nashville. She is married to Dr. Cheatham who is the doctor caring for Ellie’s father. Adelicia has plans to make Ellie fit into society and join the many women’s groups her aunt belongs to. Adelicia makes connections with Lawrence Hochley to come meet Ellie. Ellie wants her aunt’s approval but slightly changes towards her when she will not help Ellie out with her dream for a restaurant.
Lawrence Hockley is part owner of the town’s bank. He is a widow who described his wife as “thrifty” and “Clean”. He tells Ellie when and where they will marry and criticizes her clothes. He will insist she give up helping the homeless women when they marry. Ellie knows when she marries him that she will turn into a shadow of herself but for her father, she agrees to marry him.
Marcus Geoffrey is an architect by trade and a botanist by love. He works redoing warehouses in town as his bids have been ignored. He discoveries he is being blackballed because of the words he and the Mayor had while awaiting the results of his knee surgery. He is a handsome young man who is very kind and generous. What no one knows is he is the second in line to the throne of the Hungarian-Austrian Empire and must return to Austria.
Will the attraction between Ellie and Marcus keep him in America? Will the home for widows and children keep growing or what?

I love reading Tamera Alexander. She does an amazing job of creating such a beautiful scenes that you want to go and visit the places she is writing about.

A Beauty So Rare is about a young woman named Eleanor Braddock who has never married and has decided that she never will. Her father is ill so she has to make permanent living arrangements for him and temporarily live with her rich aunt, Adelicia Acklen. Eleanor has plans for what she would like to do for her future but her aunt's plans are much different and her aunt is not a force to be reckoned with. Eleanor hires a poor widow to help her with a project and decides to use her love of cooking to feed the poor widow and her child. What starts out as a simple meal being shared becomes much more and Eleanor begins to see her future changing rapidly.

The other main character in the book is Marcus Gottfried. He is from Austria and has come to America to hide from his past and his future, but must return shortly. He has great aspirations to build something amazing while in Nashville and to use his love and knowledge of plants to create the perfect colored flower for Mrs. Acklen. Eleanor and Marcus meet while he is working on the flower for Mrs. Acklen and their relationship grows into something more, but their families plans for them doesn't allow the relationship to go further than just friendship. As time inches closer to Marcus's return to Austria, Eleanor realizes her feels for him are strong but has resigned to that fact that her future does not include a happy married life. She knows he has to leave soon and that he has a surprise for her, but what could it be? Will it be something to help her remember him when he is gone?

Thank you to the publisher for the free copy of this book. It was a wonderful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rarely is a book so entrancing and beautiful as A Beauty So Rare

Set at Belmont Mansion in Nashville, A Beauty So Rare follows the adventures of an impoverished young woman, Eleanor Braddock, who wants more than anything to start her own restaurant. However, she is going to live with her father’s sister, Adelicia Acklen Cheatham, who is viewed as Southern “royalty,” and owning a restaurant is severely frowned upon by that lady.

Eleanor had come to the point where she had to live with her aunt because her father, a prominent attorney, had mentally begun to decline and Eleanor had had to sell off their assets in order to care for her father. Eleanor’s struggle to come to grips with her father’s illness really struck home for me. My beloved dad had Alzheimer’s Disease – it was so painful to watch him lose himself. My mom visited him every day once he had to be hospitalized. The last Christmas before he died, we visited him and had lunch at the nursing home. Mom had him all dressed up in his sports coat and red tie – he almost seemed like the Daddy I remembered. That was the last time he was “good.” He died two months later.

Eleanor had previously signed a lease for 3-months on a building she’d hoped would be that business. When the Chetham family goes on an extended vacation, Eleanor decides to cook for the owner of the building and a young woman from the neighborhood she’d enlisted to help her. Enter two men interested in Eleanor who had felt she’d never marry as she was so old (29) and so tall and plain.

You’ll have to read the book to find out the rest, but I guarantee you’ll love it! Another five-star romance from Tamera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it from the first page to the last

A Beauty So Rare was one of those books that I simply couldn't put down. I loved it from the first page to the last, and didn't want it to end.

Eleanor was immediately likable, and so easy for me to relate to. I really felt for her in her struggle to become her own woman and not depend on a man to survive. Eleanor is honest, hardworking and dependable. She is considered an old maid at age 29, and has reconciled herself to the fact that she'll never marry. However, Eleanor's great dream is to own a restaurant and she does everything in her power to make that dream a reality.

Marcus was an enigma from the start. I liked him too, but Eleanor was my favorite. I liked the air of mystery surrounding Marcus, and the tension between he and Eleanor was palpable. I wanted them to fall in love so badly!

Alexander's books are Christian fiction, however the Christian element is handled with a light hand. By that I mean that they aren't in-your-face Christian and if someone were not a fan of faith-based reads, I don't think that would stop them from enjoying these novels. I think of Alexander's novels as clean historical romance. I love how she conveys emotion and feelings between characters without going into the physical side of a relationship. She does it perfectly, without feeling too sweet, yet the feelings are so raw they are palpable.

I loved everything about A Beauty So Rare and immediately bought another one of Alexander's books upon finishing it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solidified My Love For Tamera Alexander

Wow, what an emotional journey! My second Tamera Alexander book , this novel just again illustrates how well this woman can write poignant romance and just suck her readers right to the end of the story. There was not a moment where I wasn't either crying or soaring on the wings of love in this novel. To me, one of the most important aspects of a novel is if it gets me emotionally involved with the characters and their struggles. This book meets all expectations there!

I really liked the main heroine in this one. She's not your usual beautiful vixen with a heart of gold who only wants to be loved. Eleanor's a little plain, older, very sensible, and is very aware that romance and marriage may not be in her future. She's got plans and the gumption to strive for those plans. I admired her strength of character and her courage as she took on society's expectations of what a proper lady in her station should do and say and just did what she thought was right and needed to be done. This is the kind of romantic heroine I can get behind!

If you want a good romance story that involves you emotions, then look no further. This book has just solidified my adoration for Tamera Alexander as a woman who can write incredible romance while still keeping the characters out of tropes and just vivid in her reader's minds. Definitely checking out other books by this author!

I became a fan of Tamera Alexander several years ago, and having read all her books, I couldn't wait for this one to come out. I was so fortunate to meet Tamera at the Belmont Mansion in Nashville where this story takes place. She is as nice as you would imagine she would be from her stories and it was such a pleasure to meet her. She graciously signed all my books! This story takes place just after the Civil War ended. Tamera weaves her stories around actual places, events, and time periods in history, they are truly beautiful uplifting stories. She paints such vivid pictures with her words. You will encounter people who experience challenges, and rise to meet those challenges and learn from those experiences. You will experience romance with just a look, a word or a kindness. Her books are inspirational in a wonderful yet subtle way. I couldn't help staying up until 130 AM finishing "A Beauty So Rare" I LOVED every minute of it! I can't tell you how many times I wanted to peek at the ending because I was dying to find out how it ended, but I wouldn't let myself. Thank you Tamera for this beautiful epic story. You made the characters, the setting and the time period come alive. I can't tell you what a delight it was to have such a sweet story to escape to each evening before bed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Belmont Hit!, March 24, 2014
By Carrie F. Pagels "Carrie Fancett Pagels" (Yorktown, VA, United States)

(A Belmont Mansion Novel Book #2, Bethany House)

What a wonderful read! A Beauty So Rare starts out a little bit slow but have no worries, Tamera Alexander soon takes off with a story wonderfully woven. I was tickled pink over heroine, Eleanor's reaction to certain colors of clothing, which I enjoy (my favorite clothing color being pink, but alas it is not Eleanor's true favorite!) Mr. Geoffries, a German archduke, is a wonderful hero. Eleanor is strong and capable and learns to trust her heart, over the course of the story. Loved the secondary characters, with the widowed ladies and their children receiving help through the H/H's efforts. Some terrific antagonists, with great characterization. Highly recommend!

This is the second book in the Belmont series and there will be a third, which I will be looking forward to! This book will go on my Favorites of 2014 for my blog.

I purchased this book as a paperback through Amazon but I also received an ebook copy through NetGalley and am under no compulsion to post a positive review. I also ordered books for my blog contributors and I think this book would make an excellent gift for Christian historical romance readers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fabulous Christian Historical Romance from this author!!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 26, 2014

This was such a beautiful story! The historical setting was perfect and well-researched. The writing immersed me in Eleanor and Marcus' world. There is heartache, but then there is also inspiration, humor, and love interwoven into the story.

I loved the characters! The dialogue between Eleanor and Marcus was really great. That would probably be my favorite aspect of the story. The first time that Eleanor and Marcus talk to each other it immediately reminded me of Darcy and Bennett from Pride and Prejudice. They both have some preconceived notions of who the other is and their conversation is witty, snarky, and made me laugh! That same sarcasm and attraction evident between Marcus and Eleanor from the beginning eventually mellows, but they continue to challenge each other and become such good friends.

This is a story of faith, hardship, family, hope, friendship, love, and finding who you are and not who you've been told you are. It's also about taking risks and learning that some things just aren't as important as you thought they were, and that others are much more. I highly recommend A Beauty So Rare to Christian Romance and Historical Romance readers!!

A Beauty So Rare has been on my reading list for quite awhile and I was finally able to read it. As I have come to find out, Tamera Alexander is excellent at writing deeper and more thought provoking books that grab your attention and refuse to let it go. The characters are very engaging and you can’t help but be drawn into the world and the relationships. What actually gave me a deeper connection with Eleanor was the way she had to deal with her father having dementia. I am actually going through the same thing with my own grandma. I felt like Tamera Alexander did a great job of showing what it is like from both view points of the person with the disease and the family member. I really enjoyed reading A Beauty So Rare and I’m excited to start the next book in this series!
