So very bizarre!

I have never read anything so bizarre or strange in my life! The writing isn't bad and kept me reading, so at least there's that, but good gawd!

I mean, I read the whole thing, so it was somewhat compelling, but not so compelling that I'll read Vol. 2. Perhaps I didn't take the right substances to get the proper effect of this tale of the weird and maybe supernatural.

Good atmosphere and premise, lackluster delivery

So I was looking for something fun to read for the Halloween season, and my brother had mentioned this book to me, so I decided to give it a shot. The book does have a pretty cool setting and atmosphere about it, but just fails to really go anywhere. Mildly interesting events happen every so often, and it is clearly building up to something, so it keeps you interested for a while. But by the time you get half way through the book, the cool setting and atmosphere aren't enough to keep the book going. Nothing of serious interest is happening, plot-wise, and it just feels like the author had a good idea, but wasn't completely sure how to fill up the space in the book to make it interesting.
I don't know that I'll continue in the series. We'll see. He's got a good idea for a series, but needs to polish and tighten up his writing a bit to make it a little more interesting and have a little better pacing. Not a bad book, but just a bit lackluster overall.

I found this book (and series) on accident and I am so happy I did. By the time I finished the first book it had already become one of my favorite reads of all time. It's a great balance of creepy, hilarious, and morbid in the best and funniest ways. The characters are steller, and the story is incredibly fun and keeps the pages turning. In my opinion, all four books and the spin off are fantastic if you enjoy bizarre widwest Americana horror with well timed humor thrown in.

This series is such a perfect blend of dry reddit wit with Lovecraftian horror. The edge-of-your-seat moments are parried by tension breaking jokes. And the outlandishly comedic antics are tempered with an air of foreboding. Jack stares straight into the abyss and then accidentally sneezes in its face.

...I almost did on this book. It was a little hard to keep things straight in the gas stations crazy world. Jack was hard not to like with his cynical view on life, but in the end he really pulled through! My favorites were Kieffer and Marlboro guy....just going with the flow.

I giggled through this whole book! Everything is weird, unhinged, dead, dead again and deader. Botched robberies, old ladies, bathroom singing cowboys, cults, gnomes a plenty, CDC to FBI same name agents but no need to fret because one of those men are not quite like the other! Good old Marlboro aka Jerry and the ever so loyal friend Tony. A dark god whom you should behold cause well his mohawk is fierce lol!😂. All at your local gas station at the end of town in a place that is weird with a dope attendant named Jack who will "nope" out of a situation that will leave you on the cross streets of what the hell and hell no! All that and I would hang with Jack! Read this book. Do not have expectations just ride the gas station waves and let it breathe.
