Have you ever felt a strong connection to an emotion or a feeling, but couldn’t quite put your finger on what it was? While asleep, have you experienced dreams that feel so real, you can’t tell if the dream actually happened, or if it was simply just a dream? All of those things are what Sophie felt, but couldn’t quite figure out why she felt these strong emotions. Her shadow knew all the answers. You know, that imaginary friend you makeup in your mind to mask over your loneliness? Or maybe not?

All Sophie’s life, she felt like she wasn’t herself. From the clothes she wore, to the way she carried herself, there was something wrong with her and there was only one person who could give her the answers she was seeking—her mother. Mum certainly wouldn’t get the mother-of-the-year award, but she did the best she could with what she had. And what was it Sophie’s mum had, you ask? A broken soul of the worse kind. She mistreated Sophie and berated her just because she existed. What’s funny is how strange life can be sometimes? The very daughter that Mum terrorized and physically and mentally abused, is the same daughter that came to her aid when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Hmmph, I would have left on the first thing smoking, but not Sophie. She had something to prove.

Speaking of proving something, Sophie was more determined than ever to find out what was missing in her life. A man perhaps? Mum took care of ending that relationship for her. A career perhaps? Mum also took care of that too. For as broken as Sophie felt, her mother was in a worse state of affairs than she. The caretaking of her mother became so overwhelming, she had to hire a nurse to oversee her care while she worked. Her mother set out to destroy that as well. Whatever Mum set out to do, she systematically set out to destroy Sophie, and poor Sophie could never figure out why? That is, until Sophie began snooping around her Mum’s room and discovered some old photos and unsent letters written to her grandmother that began to give her some clues as to the mysterious life Sophie was living.

If you ever wondered how to write a psychological thriller, Denzil certainly wrote the instructions for it in this novel, The Broken Ones. What an interesting story and one so intriguing, you will not stop turning the pages until you figure it out. In fact, I had about six different scenarios playing around in my mind while I read, and I’m happy to say I figured some of it out, but Denzil was really good in keeping you guessing and throwing you off. I absolutely love when an author does that.

What an exciting read! I’ve never read this author before, and now I’m curious about other books she’s written. If you’re looking for a read to take you to the next level, look no further! This one will do it for you!

This was such an interesting ride and I’d say a nice intro to a new to me author. While some pacing issues made this a slow start and rapid fire finish I was ultimately left guessing and still was shocked even when I thought I had all the answers.

The Broken Ones was a story about Sophie Howland who never felt like a whole person. She felt like a part of her was missing. Sophie believed she wasn’t the good daughter her mother hoped her to be.

Sophie is a broken thirty-five year old stuck by her mother’s side living in the same house, without finding a husband or having children of her own, and she works at a primary school, teaching children. Her mother has early onset Alzheimer’s disease which causes behavioral problems with others. Sophie suffered years of emotional abuse by her mother, but it’s gotten worse with the disease. Sophie stayed with Maureen all her life, putting her own life on hold for someone who has had little love for her. Sophie’s character was the shadowed victim who followed orders and put her mother’s needs before her own.

Maureen’s character was a clever distraction in the story. It’s brilliantly written. Sarah used many examples to drive the point home how cruel Maureen was.
This psychological thriller has me keenly aware of all the clues. After reading Silent Child I noticed a pattern, therefore I redirected my attention in other areas and began to search for hidden clues.
The truth is hidden we’re most secrets are hidden in the past. Trust is a huge component in this story and it helps establish the chilling sensation these characters get from Maureen’s odd behavior. It certainly gives the reader pause while questioning the behaviors of someone diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. It’s easy to dismiss the actions of Maureen by passing it off as Alzheimer’s behavior, yet Sophie’s persistence to unfold the truth helps manufacture the curiosity.

The minor characters played an intricate part in the story to help build and establish Sophie’s frame of mind during this stressful stage in her life. Sophie’s paranoid state of mind brings excitement to the story. Her constant need to address the unusual behaviors is thrilling. There are some chilling moments as well. There were unexpected twists and turns that had my mouth hanging open in shock.
The execution of past events connecting the current events was fantastic.
Control was a powerful element in this story with characters directing the other characters behaviors by influencing their choices from the circumstances of events presented to them.

Sophie is a pathetic shell of a woman who sees no way out of her current situation. She is stuck taking care of her mother who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. To make matters worse her mother has always been cruel and unloving toward her throwing insult after insult. Why doesn't her mother love her? Sophie is a teacher who enjoys her job but has been a little erratic at work and at home. She's besieged with dreams, nightmares and memories trying to break out into the open. As Sophie's mother spirals into nothingness Sophie realizes the dreams and nightmares are part of her past and not dreams at all. When Sophie 's mother calls her Becca instead of Sophie and complains of "the shadow" coming to see her in the night Sophie starts to remember a life buried long deep in her consciousness. Sophie starts to question her own sanity and thinks her mother is trying to drive her insane. She decides to install surveillance cameras to see if her mother is telling the truth about the shadow or just slipping further into oblivion. What Sophie finds is astounding! Her mother has been telling her the truth! Someone has been slipping into the house and speaking to her mother. The real truth about what has been happening is mind boggling but will finally give her answers about the dreams, her mother, her father's suicide and the truth about why she feels so empty and only half of a person. This story is too good to spoil it for you! You have to read why Sophie has always been mistreated by her mother and felt something missing. I read this story in nothing flat. I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book and it's author. Don't just stand there, read the book!

A quick page-turner that keeps you guessing until the end! The beginning of this book had a slow build with the tension stretching like a rubber band. Once it took off, I couldn't stop reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who or What is the Shadow...?? Very good suspense and mystery!

The Broken Ones by author Sarah A. Denzil delivered a surprising twist! From the time I started reading the book until it ended, I was immersed. Sophie is caregiver to her mother with early onset Alzheimer’s. She has never felt loved by her mother but is determined to take care of her for as long as possible. She has put any relationships aside in the consuming responsibilities of working at a preschool each day and then home to her unappreciative mother. I won’t post spoilers, but when odd things start happening you naturally assume Sophie has a stalker due to her one encounter with an online date. Sophie’s mother does have times of lucid thinking, so maybe her Mom is doing these things to frustrate Sophie. But…who or what is the Shadow ??
This is a very good suspense and mystery! and from the ending I hope there is a second book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A view of the psychological horror people do to one another..........

While I am not a pure fan of mysteries I will say that this is a decent novel about a totally dysfunctional family over a thirty year period. No, this is not about your next door neighbors nor your circle of friends. It is the tale of a sociopathic mother and her twin daughters. The abuses that are shown are quite gutteral and horrifying. The writing is crisp, the characters are fully developed and the reading pace is good.

SPOILER ALERT: I , as the author, would have had the twins simply abandon their mother as the last scene. This would have left her with the fading memories of her abuse and the debilitating onset of Alzheimer's. Physical and/or psychological abandonment is what she had done to her daughters throughout her life...................

A great study on the lack of motherly love and what it can do to the child who grows up in that environment. Sophie is depressed and realizes her life is going nowhere - and it's because she stayed with her mother to care for her after her diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer's. Her mother is a horrible harpy who drove her husband to suicide, then slept with every man in town to get anything she needed to survive. But Sophie has always wondered where the large amount of money came from when her mother bought them a house in an upper crust village. But what Sophie finds out is not what she imagined her mother capable of.
