Admittedly, this cartoon tortilla looks a little bit odd-looking, but what an entertaining southwestern take on the gingerbread man story! The defiant tortilla races through the desert, chased by restaurant owners Tia Lupe and Tio Jose along with an ever-increasing host of other desert residents (with their Spanish names, so sapos cornudos, burros, vaqueros, and so forth), yelling, "Run as fast as fast can be. You won't get a bite of me. Doesn't matter what you do, I'll be far ahead of you!" The repetition of story elements works very well for young readers and the illustrations are engaging. Finally the foolish tortilla runs into the hungry Senor Coyote, and meets his inevitable end. My kids loved this story.
I understand a prior edition of this book contained the word "jackasses" and "stupid" - but I don't remember seeing them in this book at all, and am certain I would have noticed. I believe it was "burros" and "foolish," which work much better.
