Let’s just say that I’m a huge fan of these books already. And, this book just went straight to my heart. Soooooo much backstory, but it didn’t FEEL like backstory. It just flowed smoothly & added such depth.
Also, loved the setting in the 1980s. I could smell the Aquanet & feel the acid wash denim! It also added suspense, because not everyone is in touch. Tech was very new & you couldn’t just ping someone or have a background check in 5 minutes. At one point & I’m practically screaming about the bad guy needing a background check, but knowing info won’t get there for days! Phew!!!
The 2 careers I’ve had are nursing & law enforcement. To see an author get the lingo, technicalities & family of those professions right... it does my heart good.
Read this one, folks. It’s amazing.

3.0 out of 5 starsConfusion.

SPOILERS AHEAD.

I read the many great reviews here, and got this book based on that. But I'm seriously confused, because the book reviewed and the book I just read have some big disconnects.

First, i wasn't sure of the age of the H and h. There were many references to cultural things that were pretty far in the past. Valley Girl references? I grew up in the 60s and 70s, so this made sense to me, but didn't fit with the characters or the time this book was supposedly written. Farrah Fawcett hairstyles? VHS tapes? Many characters without cellphones? There's nothing wrong with this, but it didn't seem to fit with the tone of this story, which tried to appear very modern.

The H...he seemed great. At the same time, he was sort of cardboard. His dialogue was weird. It sat somewhere between British mysteries from the 30s and "upper crust" diction. I started to picture him as a buff David Niven, clutching a sleek pipe and asking for vodka tonics. Not my cup of sexy tea. Sure, I get that he's got more money than Warren Buffet, but his dialogue sounded really off, and made him kind of inaccessible as a love interest. I mean, what is this guy? An international jet setter? A Special Forces dude? A super rich guy ala Bond? Trying to mush all those together did not equal 1 clearly constructed hero.

The h...she seemed far more realistic. But again, I couldn't really get a bead on her age. It's not that the character's age mattered, but it was the disconnects between things she said, the cultural references, and her basic makeup that just didn't go together.

The showstopper for me was the closeted, abusive, alcoholic, murdery best friend of the H. Wow. He was so many stereotypes of actual stereotypes that I couldn't keep up. This character was one of the most offensive ones I've read in recent history. I simply couldn't swallow a closeted gay man who hates his secret love so much that he physically abuses the women who get close to the secret love. What??? And the absolute topper--the h wouldn't reveal this repeated physical abuse to her H? And maybe the final topper--when the H actually sees and hears his closeted best friend saying and doing frankly unforgivable crap to his h, he feels "a serious conversation" is the response? Double wow wow. The H is repeatedly described as a guardian of the down trodden, particularly women, yet he refuses to deal with his closeted best friend, who's a hair away from serial killer status. No. And the seriously weird deathbed/confession scene that's about 3 paragraphs long yet neatly ties up many years of felonious behavior was nowhere close to believable.

There were many things I wanted to love about this book. But the weird cultural positions of the characters, their odd language, and the insane best friend kept me from being able to fall into the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars What A Story!!

I’m so incredibly moved by this story. I’m almost in tears as I write this review. Man, what an ending this book has!!

Gabriel has lived a very secretive life and only a handful of people truly know who he is. So when he crosses paths with hurricane Anna his world starts to change.

Anna the sassy trauma nurse, finds herself falling in love with the mysterious Gabriel. When an unknown threat is after her she goes into hiding to protect her and hers from harm.

I loved the journey Anna and Gabriel had. It showcases the reality of the world. Life is messy, bad things happen to good people, and doing what you need to do hurts like hell sometimes. I’m so glad they got their happy ending.

Another ridiculously amazing book by Kris Michaels. Guardian Defenders is a spin off of the Best Selling Kings of Guardian series and if this book is any indication, it’s going to be amazing!! I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth waiting for!

For some reason Kris Michaels always worries about her new book on release day. That woman has got to stop worrying and just relax. She writes fantastic books (I have read them all) with absorbing stories and awesome characters.

Even though this is the start of a new off-shoot series from the Kings of Guardian, it explains Gabriel setting up Guardian with both an international and a domestic branch, how he met Anna, and his involvement with the King family. The road to the union with their soulmate is never easy for a Guardian and Gabriel and Anna get their fair share of road bumps.

From the moment we meet Gabriel in this book, he takes command. Each new interaction with other characters shows how he gains the loyalty of those around him. Anna is his perfect match. She is an "in-charge" type that gets things done and I loved her first encounter with Gabriel. A supporting cast of well developed characters keeps the story flowing smoothly.

The only troubling part of the story is the confirmation of the situation in South Dakota.

If you haven't read a Kris Michaels' book, you need to - start with "Jacob" (do NOT skip "Joseph"). If you can read M/M books - "A Heart's Desire" is such a fantastic story that I reread it a LOT (I skip the smexy parts - not my thing but love the story). If you read fantasy and M/M - the Everlight series "An Evidence of Magic" and "Incident of Magic" are also amazing. Also, I wouldn't bother reading reviews for Kris Michaels' book - it's a waste of time, when you could be reading her books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!

Kris Michaels is an AMAZING storyteller and her suspense romances are the best im my opinion.
Gabriel’s book was everything and more that I hoped it to be and it’s my new favorite in all of the Guardian books.
So amazingly written.
I loved the era (80’s) the story was written in. That was my era and live that I could’ve identify with many things.
Let me start with Anna Harriger.. love her so much!! She was dorky, sweet, caring and so strong. She was perfect for Gabriel.
Reading about Gabriel or the mysterious David Xavier was awesome. So protective of Anna. And love reading about the beginning of Guardian.
The storyline and the suspense are amazing and so good.
Usually I don’t like Anthologies, but like always Kris Michaels is amazing in everything she does.
I don’t want this series to EVER end.
If you like Security Suspense Romance or Militarily Romance, then you’ll have to read The Kings of Guardian, Guardian Security Shadow World or The Guardian Defender. They are a must read.

My Rating: 5 STARS!

Once again Ms. Michaels delivers an intriguing, complex full of life story. The Guardian World has been one of my all time favorite series. Each one tells such a unique story of the main characters but solidifies the series as a whole.

Each one, including this one can be read standalone, but you will miss so kuch more depth if you don't read the entire series.

I have to admit looking for names and scenarios that were thread through the Kings of Guardian series. But really the only thing that really mattered was how Gabriel met the Kings. It explains so much about that relationship between Gabriel and all the King kids.

Before this book we didn't know much about Anna, but what an awesome character. She is perfect for Gabriel.

This series/world is billed a "romance", but it is SO much more. Intrigue, real world events incorporated, humor, friendships and of course suspense/crime all rolled so cohesively you won't want to miss a single word.

Can't wait for more!

Kris Michaels weaves some of the most compelling and genuinely interesting stories I've ever read, especially her Guardian series. This is no less true with Gabriel. This is the story of the early years in the relationship of Anna Harriger and Gabriel Alexander AKA David Xavier. There are lots of great references to 80's pop culture that will conjure up memories. There's also insight into how Gabriel built Guardian Security into the powerhouse it became. A serial killer brings Anna into Gabriel's, life just about the time he's putting together the domestic operations arm of Guardian Security.

Can I tell you how much I love Anna Xavier? She's an absolute gem; real, funny, sassy, intelligent, talks a mile a minute and she takes no prisoners. She's perfect for the workaholic, dedicated, selfless Gabriel. She teaches him to relax a bit while imprinting herself on his heart and soul. He entrusts her with his true self as he falls in love with her more every day.

5.0 out of 5 stars humble beginnings of Anna

I am soooooooooooo glad that I read Gabriel (Guardian Defenders Book #1) by Kris Michaels BEFORE I started reading Passages. Gabriel has been an enigma throughout most of the series. The reader knows of him as the CEO of Guardian Security. In certain novels, Gabriel made an appearance via a phone or conference call. Even though he was not directly in actions scenes, his presence and importance were felt.

In Gabriel, the reader goes back to the 1980’s when Gabriel and Guardian Security was starting to get notoriety in the international community and was in the early stages of expanding its domestic base within the United States. While Gabriel was described as a handsome and tall single man, he was a workaholic who put all his efforts into making the world a better place. While working on a serial killer case in Colorado, serendipity strikes and Gabriel meets “Hurricane Anna,” a humorous and bossy nurse whom he meets and has a one-night tryst.
Despite his tries to get in touch with Anna, he is unsuccessful. Six years pass, until unfortunate circumstances in New Orleans throw them together again. Will he let her get away from him again? Will she accept his crazy work life to be with him?

The Epilogue ends in the present day so the reader can see how this couple started and where they end up as a family unit.

WOW! What an intriguing and amazing story by Kris! This is basically the beginning of the Guardian family. Gabriel is the founder of this organization and Anna is the nurse who stole his heart. The co-founder was a dear friend to Gabriel but didn't realize what his friend was. He found out after he was killed on an assignment. Anna was terrified of him so she did what she thought was the right thing to do to protect all of the people she loved, including her baby. When he finally found Anna, she had given birth to a baby girl. Now, they lived happily ever after while Gabriel continued to grow his business. FANTASTIC job Kris! I would highly recommend this book!

What an awesome and satisfying story! It was perfect! I loved every word..... Gabriel and Anna's love story was so beautiful and heartwarming. After reading all of the Guardian series books it was wonderful to get the backstory on the mysterious very powerful man that was featured in all the books as the top man behind everything to do with the Guardian teams and their culture of steadfastness, loyalty and support for each other.
This book was a pleasure from beginning to end.... Once I started it I could not put it down... I am writing this review at 2:30 AM in the morning.😁. There was so much action, suspense, twists and turns and unexpected happenings that I was kept riveted and engrossed throughout the entire story!!! I highly recommend this book and am looking forward very much to the next books in this series...... I can't wait to see what Gabriel and Anna's children get up to and am so glad that the Guardian series seems like it will continue on... I am very fond of all the other characters and it was great to find out how the Kings met Gabriel and the beginnings of the dynasty.

5.0 out of 5 stars So this is how it all began for Anna and Gabriel, wow!

Ever since I started the series months ago I have been wondering about Gabriel and Anna what their story was. Wow, what a story it was. It was filled with jealousy, danger, a serial killer, action, romance, and great storylines. This is what I have come to expect from Ms. Michaels and her Guardian series and spinoffs.

Gabriel leads a double life and he needs a strong, independent woman to stand by him. Anna blew into his life briefly but left an impression and six years later when they had cause to meet again she was no different. Two remarkable characters destined to be together even after being torn apart for his job or from his own best friend.

Ms. Michaels had done it again. Gabriel is incredible as is Anna and their story is nothing short of amazing. I was sucked in from the beginning and the story would let me go until the end. I look forward to more and more Guardians!
