Really wanted to like this series

I read the first book and thought it was ok but good enough to continue on thinking the author needed to work out some kinks.
This book has the same issues as the first
1. People are referenced in a way that makes you think you should know them. I kept going back to the authors list to make sure I was starting at the first book.
2. The MCs will be in a full blown make out session and the H or h would start narrating their life and previous relationship that has made them distrustful blah, blah, blah. Then they broke apart and I was like, oh yeah, they were kissing. Not sexy at all.
3. Confusing scenes and conversations. I quit this one at the “prank” in the kitchen. He put his finger in a mouse trap that also had a catnip stuffed toy mouse but he couldn’t smell it bc ??? Then Nina asks “when did you get a cat?” And Preston replies “I don’t”. Don’t what???
I really like shifter/fated mates stories and that was another issue I had with this series. They can have sex and kids with people who aren’t there mates. Also, they keep talking about how wonderful and rare it is to find but, in this book, they don’t seem all the excited or interested.
