4.0 out of 5 starsNot the Best Reacher but Still Good
Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2021
I agree with what many others are saying. This Jack Reacher is just not the same person we have all come to know. The story is not quite as tight and the beginning drags somewhat. I was shocked, shocked I tell you that Reacher had little regard for Fenton. The old Jack none Reacher would have definitely gotten to know her better (in a real and biblical sense). I still liked the book and the action does pick up toward the end. If you are a fan, like I am, this book is worth getting if for no other reason than to complete your collection. That being said, this is probably my last buy. I will read Andrew Child's future work through the library.

2.0 out of 5 starsVery obviously not the original Reacher
Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2021
This Reacher is very obviously not written by the original creator. He hesitates far too much about doing what needs to be done. He lets people live that would be better off dead (not the intended pun of the title, but very apt). He keeps wanting to get the police involved instead of handling the problem himself. He barely even looks at the woman he's reluctantly helping. As in, there's barely any physical description of her at all, besides her having a prosthetic foot.

It's not a horrible book, but this is just not the Reacher we knew and loved. His lack of concern about crossing lines to get the job done, his violence without hesitation or remorse, his unapologetic appreciation of women; that's what made him stand out and endure through so many books. I love the old Reacher enough that I'll give the new author another chance. But if he doesn't get him back in character soon, I will likely give up.

I love the Jack Reacher series...but I didn't love this one. It seemed fragmented. It didn't seem to make a lot of sense plotwise. Why did our bad guy let Reacher live after he had killed numerous of his cohorts just to drive a truck to some destination, made no sense at all. And yeah its a fiction novel but there has to be some real tie in to fictional reality which this does not and that's just one example of what doesn't pull together in the latest of Reacher novels..is it the son, or is the author lost his touch with "reality"? I still enjoyed the novel but the gaps in fiction reality bothered me. Still a good read, but we can't let Reacher lose his toudh...or the Author.

A treasured friend showed up yesterday. I’d been waiting for his visit for months and wasn’t disappointed. Jack Reacher told me of his latest travels. He’d packed up his toothbrush, and left Nashville to finish his trek to the Pacific Ocean.
As usual he’s interrupted. Finding himself on the deserted highway walking toward an Arizona border town, he spots a jeep in the bushes up against the only tree Jack had seen in the last several miles, with its driver slumped over the wheel. Being Jack, he rushes to offer help and is met by the muzzle of a Glock pointed at him by a woman who obviously knows how to handle it.
She has a story and after helping get rid of the two bodies of the attackers she shot; Reacher joins her quest to find her brother. Of course, Reacher discovers that not all of the town’s other four hundred residents are good and decent either.
Jack battles with the cunning and diabolical Waad Dendoncker, a brilliant businessman whose plans have dire national security implications. An attack on a patriotic event is imminent and no way will Jack let that happen. When Reacher hunts you, you’re better off dead. Then the bodies begin to pile up and Reacher elicits help from the FBI.
Jack didn’t linger long but his stay was packed with action and enjoyment. I’m already looking forward to his next visit.

Jack Reacher is walking down a lonely road in the middle of nowhere. He sees an old, weathered military Jeep crashed into a tree on the side of the road. A female passenger is slumped over the steering wheel, apparently injured. He goes to check if he is ok and suddenly she's pointing a pistol at his chest. Then a car pulls up, the passengers get out and all he'll breaks loose. The accident was a set up and poor Reacher stumbled right into it. The good Samaritan. What then follows is a typical action filled epic Reacher adventure. A terrorist is planning to bomb an FBI research building. The casualty and destruction will be devastating. Another excellent read in this series!! Enjoyed immensely!!

Story has more twists and turns than the road to the top of Pikes Peak. Lee Child writes as about as exciting as you can get. I have been following the Jack Reacher series since the first. I enjoy them so much I am rereading all again. They say one of the benefits about going old is you can hide your own Easter eggs. I am enjoying every book as much as I did the first time. I don't remember them, so what better joy can you experience? Once you start reading this book you can't put it down. I read it in less than 42 hours and I am a slow reader. I enjoy every word.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lee Child still has the touch.

I’ve been reading the Jack Reacher series from the beginning. The stories vary up & down in uniqueness, but the Reacher mystique is still a base for most good stories like this one.. In Better Off Dead, Child struggles to much to describe the buildings of a key element, and tie in a little known character. But never mind—he gets it all across when the story needs it.

Reacher’s invincibility in the face of tough odds is still both engrossing and barely believable…but part of his character! Reacher has a confidence and indomitable will, that works well with his tendency to help the unfortunate, more often a damsel in distress.

I wonder what new trick Lee Child can dream up to keep his books uniquely compelling.

I listened to the audio book first. For some reason I didn’t like the story. Too wordy, all adjectives. I think it was expectations. I stupidly resent Lee Child sharing credit with his brother, to me an inferior writer. I don’t want things to change. But they do. Fact of life. At least this way Reacher will have the opportunity for life into the future. I love this character and the new series, even the movies with Tom Cruise, who at least got the movies made. Anyway, I got the book so I could read it myself. Not the same reaction this time. No issue with plot or writing. I found it interesting and provocative and very Reacher. Now I am waiting for the next book.

In this the twenty-sixth Jack Reacher is just trying to get to the West Coast. However thing don't go as planned first off he meets Michela Fenton at what seems to be a one car accident. From there it just gets worse seems Michele is a veteran and she needs help so Jack decides to help her find her brother. From that point on it is a fast race to find a missing brother and take down a vicious terrorist. There are twisted and turns to the very end, but Jack prevails and the bad guys pay. Then there is a grateful CHI by the end of the story. So settle in for a thrilling story that will having you thinking how is this going to end.

The story starts like they all do. Reacher shows up in some small town and has to rescue a lady in distress. Michelle has a twin brother who is into bomb making. He asks for her to come rescue him from a bad guy. And of course Reacher helps the plot thickens and you think you have it all figured out but then there is a change and then another. Keeps you on the edge until the end. I really like his stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Reacher Classic

Our man Reacher has a knack for getting into high-level trouble and this novel is a testament to this. Because he is brave, brainy and brawny he always wins by using all these talents at his disposal and he does so in an entertaining manner. Just when you think he's done for he pulls a rabbit out of his hat and comes out on top.
The best thing about this book is its readability, The Child team writes in a fashion that is compelling; the pages fly by both quickly and easily. I rated this one five stars because of these factors and I think you, too will enjoy it as much as I did.

I was very upset with the first chapter and almost put the book down because I did not want it to be true. But I continued. I am glad I did. Love these books. There are not many that keep me guessing. And the women are not clingy wimps or looking for a sugardaddy 3 times their age. We live in a complex world that is very dangerous. Scary stuff oit there.
