5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent first entry into Henckel knives
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 5, 2022
This is my first "good knife" and I'm quite pleased so far. It trimmed a chateaubriand cleanly, and easily sliced it. I know there are more expensive/sharper knives out there, but if you're not a professional, this knife is sharp and will up the game of anyone who considered themselves an above average home cook.

I was initially upset because when I received the package it said the knife was made in Spain. On the Amazon item page it says country of origin is Germany. I wanted a genuine German Henckels knife and definitely not one made in China (based on terrible reviews) as many Henckels are. With this knife, the steel is made in Germany, but it's assembled in Spain. I decided to give it a whirl anyway, and my anger subsided when I used it. I'm getting a Zwilling (parent company of Heckels) utility knife for Christmas. Excited about that one too.

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat knife but arrived not quite sharp enough to work
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 14, 2020
*Update 4-23-2020*

I had this knife sharpened by a professional sharpener in my area and the knife still did not impress me with it's sharpness. On top of that I've noticed that the spine of the blade is very uncomfortable to work with as it is sharp and cuts into your skin. I think this knife is OK. But it is NOT a 50 dollar knife!

I don't think a 50 dollar knife should have trouble getting a sharp edge and have a sharp spine.
For the record mine is the one made in Spain not China.
This knife was clearly rushed out of production and it is dissapointing. If I had a grinder I'd probably be able to polish it up a bit but I don't.

I will keep my rating at 3 stars. I'm neither impressed or think the knife is in a condition where it is must return.

The knife arrived on time and just in time to cut an onion for Steak Day.

It was packaged in a white carboard box with bubble wrap that was then placed inside a larger box.
I'm not sure if they are supposed to come this way. Maybe this is their bulk packaging? The knife looked new however so that wasn't a concern.

Stamped on the knife this knife is a J.A.Henckels International knife made in Spain.
So for the person who said they got one that was made in China and not Spain, they were clearly sent the wrong knife which is from a different collection.

While the knife did the job I can attest that it arrived under sharpened. For 50 Dollars I expected more to be honest.

Cutting the onion took a bit more force than it should of and the knife failed the paper cutting test.
No big deal I can resharpen it. I don't feel that a product you pay 50 dollars for should come this way though. Will five extra passes on the grinder or whetstone kill their business?
Or maybe arriving sharpened is a privileged left for $100 plus knifes due to corporate greed.

Manufacturing Quality:

Where the bolster meets the blade it clearly was finished incorrectly. The bolster is a bit crooked leading up to the blade. It's only noticeably if you are looking for it.

How it handles.
As for the weight and handling of the blade it is great! Well balanced. The balanced point is slightly offset towards the handle side by about 3/4 an inch. But I prefer that.

I think I will keep the knife because it is knife and I need one now not later but if Henckels is reading these things you need to check your quality control over in Spain. They are clearly rushing the blades by skimping on the sharpening and grinding of the bolster.

All in all I like the knife. I will not be buying from Amazon anymore to purchase expensive kitchen tools. The packaging was suspect. Is the J.A. Henckels International Spain worth $50 here on Amazon? No at least not the one I got. Not sharpened, no retail packaging and the bolster was not ground perfectly.

I will update this review with my findings on knife retention and durability after I have had more time with it. For now I think you all would be better served by going to a reputable dealer on the other major kitchen tools websites and picking up something there for the same price where they probably have more current stock in the retail package. It might provide for a better product. Or go somewhere in person and try the knife out in person and see what you think.

2.0 out of 5 stars Much lower quality than expected from Henckels
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 31, 2022
Size: 8-inchPattern Name: KnifeVerified Purchase
Title tells you all that you need to know. I bought a very similar knife from them years ago and it was my workhorse knife for 5+ years. Recently, I decided that a new workhorse knife was needed and purchased this. It did not come sharp, nor did it have anywhere near an even grind on the bevel of the blade. The blade was also incredibly thin, something similar to a filet knife. The polymer handle is also not correctly lined up with the tang of the knife, with about a milimeter and a half or so of difference between the end of the tang and the end of the handle. Overall, their quality seems to have drastically dropped over the years and I would not recommend this knife.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced, cheaply made junk. Company is just capitalizing on their reputation.

First off, this knife is made in Spain, not Germany. The logo is different from the original.
The edge is poorly ground and knicked inseveral places.
The scales dont fit properly causing the tang to protrude, and the spine of the blade sharp enough to cut you.
Not worth buying at full price. Hell, not really worth more than about $20 in my opinion.

Disappointed with the quality. for a $50+ knife, I was expecting it to have some substance and weight to it. Feels very cheap in my hand.

2.0 out of 5 stars Uncomfortable Handle with Square Edges

The handle is uncomfortable with square edges. The product says Made in Spain, not Assembled in Spain. There's no way to be sure the blade is made in Germany.

Very disappointed. Packaging seemed really cheap. The knife was duller than my year old knifes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading advertising

I gave this product two stars even though it hasn’t been used. I bought it for a Christmas gift. The title says Zwilling. It’s DISTRIBUTED by Zwilling. It’s brand in Henkel. It’s not MADE in German, it’s made in Spain with German steel. Yes, it does say this in the fine print if one bothers to read it. The title itself says Zwilling and says German so that’s what I expected for this price. I would return it but Christmas is in two days.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing special

Not my favorite knife. Rusted after one incident where I didn't wash it immediately after use. Tip bent in the first week. I find the handle uncomfortable and pretty much all the edges of the knife are sharp, not just the blade that's supposed to be sharp. I could visibly see out of the box that the blade edge was not exactly straight. It's not rolled or damaged, it's just not straight. After 2 months it already needs sharpening whereas my Cuisinart chef knife (same age and use) does not.

I was really disappointed and I'm not sure how these knives got such a great reputation. I thought this would be my favorite knife, but now it's my backup knife.

2.0 out of 5 stars Handle ‘neck’ not smoothed out - cuts into my skin
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 28, 2020

I am so disappointed in this knife. I have been trying to work with this for awhile, hoping I could figure out a solution because the actual cutting blade is quite nice and it is well balanced. However, the handle itself is horrible! All the corners on the handle are uncomfortable, as if they forgot to smooth out the handle edges. The absolute worst part is that the ‘neck’ (see picture where arrow is pointing) is so terribly sharp that it literally cuts into my skin each time I use it! I am an experienced cook and have been familiar with many kinds of knives through the years. I certainly expected better from Henkels as this knife is just unusable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Decent Blade Shape, Good Steel, Poor Handle Shape, Uncomfortable
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 15, 2018
Size: 8-inchPattern Name: KnifeVerified Purchase
Bought this because I wanted a 'good' 8" chef. I was rapidly disappointed by the handle and the knife bolster. It is not a comfortable knife to hold and use. The steel is good, and I liked the blade shape, but Henckels should have put more time into shaping the handle and the bolster. I discovered that I'm not a fan of a heavy bolster either. I considered putting it on the vertical belt sander to contour the handle, but I ended up buying a better knife and gave this one away. If it had a more carefully shaped and comfortable handle, I would have given it a couple more stars.

A knife needs to have a comfortable handle that fits your hand. That is as important as good steel and a good blade shape. If the knife is hard to hold, the rest doesn't matter.
