4.0 out of 5 starsSpecs indicate robust protection
Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2019
I just upgraded my electric service from 100 Amp to 200 Amp and added this protection device at the same time. Turn off ALL power to the box before installing. My installation is surface mount and I used a 1/2" steel offset connector to connect the protector to the breaker box. With your provided wire, connect the ground and neutral to their respective buses. I connected L1 & L2 to an existing dual ganged breaker to pick up both power legs. Installation is simple, but if you don't know your way around the inside of the breaker box hire an electrician! For the curious I attached pictures of the inside of the device.

2.0 out of 5 starsDid not work as advertised - But Leviton Honored Warranty Claim!
Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2013
Unit was professionally installed in 2011. We had a power surge last week (not lightning) that fried the unit as well as anything in my house that was not connected to a standalone surge protector. Maybe i got a bad unit, there is no way to tell. I will be sending it back to Leviton for testing in hopes they honor their $25,000 protected equipment warranty. Even if you have a whole home surge protector, I would urge you to use standalone surge protector power strips for everything that plugs into an outlet. Learn from my experience. It is much easier to go to the store to buy a bunch of new surge protector power strips than to repair or replace your appliances and electronics.

Update - October 12, 2013
I went through the warranty claim process with Leviton and finally received my settlement check today. It was an elongated process and in the end I received payment for little more than 1/2 my total claim. Their warranty excludes any outdoor equipment, so that reduced my claim instantly. They have an (in my opinion) arbitrary method of depreciating damaged equipment which further reduced the claim. Finally, they excluded a few items (which in my opinion were not specifically excluded from their warranty), but it was not worth arguing/delaying any further over a couple hundred dollars. In the end, the process was as you would expect - slow. The warranty is written to Leviton's benefit such that it minimizes their exposure. I must say that I had very low expectations and was happy that they honored the claim. They also provided a replacement Whole Home Surge Protector under the warranty claim.

Overall, I am satisfied that they honored the claim. Do I wish i received 100% payment for my loss, of course! However, they could have easily tested the unit and denied any malfunction of the unit and paid me nothing. So in the end, I would have to say that I do recommend this unit and that is why i am changing my rating to 2 stars. I still stand by original recommendation, that even with this unit attached to your main service, you still need surge protectors for every single thing you plug into an outlet!

5.0 out of 5 stars WE'VE RESEARCHED & THIS ONE IS THE BEST!

All the others SELF-SACRIFICE. If a surge hits and destroys this unit, Leviton will replace it within 5-years. Up to $25,000 for Connected Equipment. Limited Lifetime Product Replacement.

Whole-home surge protection will be code in 2020 (see "2020 NEC Review Underway"). We wanted GREAT protection and choose this one overall. It's SOOOO worth the expense and easy to self-install.

Second level Levitan support, fellow named Manny was amazing, answered all our questions brilliantly. IMHO a better surge protector does not exist, and Amazon, 85% 5-star ratings agree :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Requires Electrical Skill Not All Have - You have been warned
Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2019

Trust Levitron, not an easy install unless you use small wire, then what's the point. So use #8 stranded. Need short L1 and L2 lines, long wires reduce effectiveness, mount closest to main breaker on bus. Move breakers to do that, another complication. Probably have to drill a 13/16" hole in the load center case side parallel with that position unless you get lucky with a knock out. If you are not more than just a handyman don't install this DYI, load centers are dangerous. A good electrician can install it in a couple of hours or less. Once installed looks good and works automatically.

5.0 out of 5 stars Leviton Surge Protector for Residential Panels
Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2013

I have used the Leviton 51120-1 Panel Protector for years in the residential market as an electrician they will protect against surges and spikes in the electricity and lighting, the price on amazon was better than I could do at an electrical supply. The unit is easy to install just follow instructions I would advise to use an electrical contractor the unit has two lights on it a red if on means the unit has had an electrical spike or lighting hit if the green light is on means everything is fine in the electrical system. It will require two spaces in the panel for the breakers that connect to the unit. I rated this product 5 stars because I have used over 40 of these in the past ten years without a problem and protected many electrical systems from the trouble of spikes and surges that can cause thousands of dollars in appliances and damage to the electrical system in your home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Install and Cheap Insurance for Your Home Electronics

Very easy to install and wire, if you have some experience in home wiring and electrical. Instructions are clear and concise. I had a furnace guy try to sell me a surge protector for the furnace and air conditioner for $400. I installed this myself for less than $200 and it covers the entire house.
This is one of those "insurance" things. If it works as it should you will never know.
You don't have to be an electrician to install this but if you are electrically challenged be safe and hire an electrician. It should take them less than an hour to install.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good protector, the "Big Boy" of whole-house surge suppressors
Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2016

We lost a number of electronic devices in an electrical storm and I was not happy with this - one of them was the remote receiver for a ceiling fan that a really tall ladder was needed for. So I decided to get the "big boy" of the whole-house surge protectors. You can put a surge protector power strip on your TV and on the computer, but it is not so easy with a ceiling fan controller or many other devices that are usually wired in directly.

I had an electrician hook mine up and he was able to piggyback this on an existing 50amp breaker and used 6 gauge wire to connect it. For best results, you want it as high up on the panel as possible and use as heavy gauge wire as possible. With mine connected I feel a lot better about electrical storms now and hopefully will not be losing any more fan controllers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now I rest comfortably...

...knowing that my house is protected from power surges. I did some research before buying the Leviton protector. It is more expensive than some others, but it has the highest specification I found for any protector for single phase residential use.

For a long time I have had plugin UPSs or protected power strips for sensitive electronics, but now I live in a place prone to power irregularities. My local power utility will install a whole house protector for a cost of $10 per month added to the electric bill. At that rate the Leviton protector will pay for itself in about 18 months. I am happy to have installed this unit to protect the rest of my electrical devices and appliances from surges. I especially like the indicator lights that show that the suppressor is in good working order.

It was a breeze to install; it took me less than 30 minutes from power cut to power restore, and that includes time for opening the panel knockouts and mounting the Leviton protector to the wall. If you are comfortable working around electricity you can quite easily do this yourself. You can find detailed installation instructions on the Leviton website if you need to assess the complexity of installing before buying.

Just note that this protector does not come with the four wires required to connect it to the main panel. It needs two black wires (one for each of the two hot electric busses), one white one (for the neutral connection) and one green (for the ground connection). You can use any cable or wires with a minimum of 12 gauge if connected to a 20 amp breaker. I used an offset nipple between the panel and the protector, and this worked very well for my situation as my electrical panel is surface mounted, not recessed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make sure you get professional installer.

You really need to have someone who knows what they are doing to install this. I purchased it on the recommendation of a licensed electrician because of power surges throughout the neighborhood. In one case, the surge caused the individuals appliances to completely be destroyed. They had to be replaced. These surges are quite often caused by squirrels chewing on wires to the house, believe it or not. I noted it was easy to install, but again it is something that should be done by a professional.

I have had my Leviton 51120-1 Whole House Surge Protector for over 5 years, and it still works great. I have had no problems with it. Since having an electrician install my Leviton 51120-1 surge protector, I have not had any of my PC's Power Supplies damaged from voltage surges. Both green LED indicators on my Leviton 51120-1 show my system is working fine. I am very happy with my Leviton, 51120-1 and if it ever needs replacing, I'll definitely buy another one. Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best you can buy

I live in area with frequent power outages when the Thunderstorms roll in in the spring. After our last brown out followed by a power surge, I said enough already and purchased this item. This is a whole house surge protector (it will do nothing in a brown out) The item is well made of solid metal and has two green lights on the front to tell you its working. If these lights ever go out, it has taken a surge and will need to be completely replaced. I took one look at it and said there is no way I am going to try and install this thing myself, so I hired a qualified electrician who charged $100.00 and took about 30 minutes to install it. The electrician was very pleased with this unit and said that not only could it handle my house, but it was also suitable for use in a commercial building. I feel more secure having this unit and believe it is a good idea for anyone with expensive electronics and a dicey power utility.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very heavy duty and excellent quality!

I pulled the trigger on this one because of how heavy duty/solid it looked in the pictures. If you're not very familiar with home-electric/working inside an electrical panel, then you should definitely expect to hire an electrician to move all your breakers, and install the 2-20amp breaker in the 1st and 2nd position. Electric is no joke, the wires in the box can kill you quick. Be smart. Great product!
