Fairstein is a good writer, and I'll read her stuff again, but she's not a GREAT writer. When I read, for instance, Pat Conroy, I lust to be a writer like him. But she does a good job, and is very informative, and I come from NYC, so I relate to a lot of the situations. It's clear that the book is written by a woman, just like it's clear that the Reacher books are written by a macho man, but that is not a bad thing, just a note. Good mystery.
