Smoke and Mirrors is a collection of short stories that exhibit Neil Gaiman's potential for greatness. The stories are thumbnails. They are a series of sketches that could be fleshed, out at some future date, to become completed works of art. Most of them leave the reader hanging, wondering how they would turn out; if they were ever finished. Smoke and Mirrors is either a good book for someone who appreciates the writing process and likes to read the author's notes or it is a set of previews that reveal what Neil Gaiman is going to write. Either way, Smoke and Mirrors is a semi-satisfying set of teasers.
