Several years ago an electrician hooked up my Honda 5000 generator to power our house in the event of a power failure. The hook up has worked fine, but just recently I became very aware that he had hooked up the system improperly. So, I set off to research the appropriate way to make the hook up.

I stumbled by accident on an instruction video by Reliance Controls explaining how to hook up their generator transfer switch. The video was clear, concise and easy to follow. Being fairly handy, I decided it was time to make the proper hook up for my house.

I ordered the Reliance Controls 31410CRK 30 Amp transfer switch as having ten circuits to power seemed like the right size for our home. I read the instructions (which I was already familiar with after watching the video) and the actual hook up to the electric panel took about 30 minutes from start to finish. There was a bit more time involved to attach the transfer panel to the wall, install the included outside receptacle, and run the 10 gauge wire from the receptacle to the transfer switch. All totaled, I think this project took me about three hours, but the hooking up of the switch itself was very simple.

During the install I had a couple questions, and called the Reliance Controls customer service line. Both times, with no wait time, I was put in touch with a very informed customer service person named Jane who quickly answered my questions. Awesome customer service.

I have attached a few photos to show the transfer panel installed but before wiring to my service panel, after the wiring was completed, and the finished product. I tested the system and everything works great.

This is a great product, easy to install, and from a Wisconsin based company that has been in business for decades. You'll be happy with the product if you purchase it.

This model has been updated and replaced by Reliance 310CRK.

This model works great if you only run smaller devices. The largest you can switch over is a double-pole 20Amp, which is not clearly defined in the description.

The NEWER MODEL (310CRK) has a cover, actual breakers (not just push button resets), REPLACEABLE common Square D breakers and, per the instructions from the vendor, you can swap out the main double pole 20Amp breaker with a double 30Amp breaker (for things like water heaters). The newer model also has a breaker cover, this one is completely exposed, which the electrician was not fond of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy install
Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2017
Style: Transfer Switch KitVerified Purchase
I read and watched a lot of reviews and installation videos. Until I felt like I was comfortable with doing the installation for myself. Of course my wife was like no way, let an electrician do the work. So I got two quotes of $1100/$1800 for installation and parts. I was like no way, one guy even quoted $1100 to do an interlock. That was out of my budget especially seeing that the install seemed so easy.

I made a plan:
First labeled all the breakers in my panel and see which 10 I would want in case of lights out.
Then tried to balance usage based on standby and continuous needs. Letter each circuit A-J.

I hardwired the power Inlet to the transfer switch, this was simple and easy. Just follow the colors.

Cut the main power, Remove the panel cover. Used a nonconctact voltage tester to confirm no power except for main power line into home. Wiring was straight forward and easy.

Few hiccups experienced
Two of my circuits had red wires and not black. I read that both black and red are loads so I went forward as if they were black.
I needed only three 20amp, but switch had 4, called reliance, said they would send me another 15amp for me to replace but I decided to only connect 9 circuits to transfer. You cannot connect a 20 amp switch to a 15 amp circuit in main panel. So I just electric tape each end and left it inside panel.
My Westinghouse wgen generator required me to remove the bonded neutral wiring to make it floating neutral. Easy and simple.

Equipment used
Transfer switch kit $365
Hammer owned
Wire cutter/trimmer $12
Noncontact voltage tester $13
Drywall cutter $6
Phillips and flathead screwdrivers owned
Lamp owned (used generator to power)

I have no electrical experience. Just some common sense and good with my hands.

The whole installation including going to get gas and setting up generator (adding oil and gas) took about 2.5 hours.

Be safe, good luck.
Hope this helped. Thanks for all those who took time to do the reviews and included instruction help.

I selected the Reliance Controls 31410CRK because of its positive reviews, overall value, and ease of installation. The kit includes hardware to wire into the service panel, but some other pieces of hardware are required. (Like wire and mounting hardware) The kit included an Installation DVD that I never watched. The written instructions and the tutorial on Reliance Controls' website were more than sufficient. The total time working inside the panel was about 30 minutes. The total project time, including mounting hardware and pulling wire was under 3 hours.

A suggestion I have for anyone looking at any transfer switch is planning. I mapped all of the outlets, light fixtures, appliances, etc. to each circuit. Then I used meters and product labels to determine wattage requirements of various products. Armed with that data, I was able to plan the circuit layout to balance the load on the generator and pair amperages between breakers and switches. It also helped when deciding which circuits were absolutely necessary, nice to have, and not needed.

Another suggestion is to replace standard light bulbs with compact florescent bulbs. My house has 28 light bulbs. At 60W each, the total is 1,680 watts, but the 13 watt CFL total is only 364 watts. Granted, all the lights in the house aren't on at the same time, but it will reduce the load on the generator and your electric bill in the long run.

The power inlet box is a little cramped when using knockouts in the back. I still opted for using the rear knockout for a flush appearance outside. The 20 amp cord end would have been handy, but I have a 30 amp generator and won't be using it.

Pictures on the web always seem to show the transfer switch to the left of the panel. The cable can be rotated and the switch mounted to the right of the panel, as I did. The wires were long enough to reach from the bottom of the panel to the top, so a lot of wire needed to be trimmed off. I trimmed as I worked, so the cables are all just the right length now. Since this is a permanent installation, I would have liked to see solid core wire rather than stranded. (Only for clean panel installation and ease of insertion in breakers.) The MC connectors between the service panel and the transfer switch do have anti-short bushings. Depending on your state and inspector, they may or may not be required.

The kit includes two handle ties if any circuits require 240v. There are two screws on each tie that make them easily removable. Since I didn't have any circuits requiring 240v, I removed both ties to use the full 10 circuits.

Each of the wires from the transfer switch is marked with letters for the circuit. The H and the I look very similar, so pay attention to cable orientation when you look at the letters. I paired all the wires and taped them together before starting to avoid hunting in the dark. There are just enough wire nuts to perform the installation in the panel and in the switch, so don't drop any into the sump area.

When power is out, cut-over is simple. Start the generator, plug the generator into the power inlet, and throw the circuit switches. I like to throw the switches one at a time. The watt meter will spike when startup current is drawn. When the meter goes back down, I'll throw the next switch.
Since Reliance uses break-before-make switches, you can safely perform generator testing while the house is still on utility power. There is no risk of utility power passing to the generator or generator power feeding into utility power, if wired properly. Individual circuits can be flipped to make sure things are working before a power outage occurs.

Overall, I think the transfer switch is well constructed and the instructions are thought out and complete. My previous electrical experience was limited to replacing outlets and installing ceiling fans, which helped, but the installation of this was very straightforward. I will definitely be installing one of these transfer switches in any house I own in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good to have this instead of extension cords

I purchased a generator from another site back in the summer of 2016. I figured at least that was a start, if the power went out I could run a cord thru my window and keep the refrigerator running. That all changed when my dad was what I was up to.

He went on line to search for the best thing we could get for my needs. He told me get this one and I did in August of 2016. When this came in he was at my house that Saturday to install this. All was great for installation until our next door neighbor house burned down.

My dad did this while working his full time job and taking care of two houses, so this was going to take us a little more time, and I was in no hurry. He did all the work and brought his wire over to run from this box to the outside of the house, which saved me money also.

He had all of this wired up except the short wire connected to this transfer box, and then he passed away. I'm about as handy as an elephant in a china cabinet, so I had to call in a professional electrician to finish that part. They came in and had to inspect everything, then said they would like to hire him, and finished the job for me.

I have my whole house hooked up, except my dryer, and was not disappointed as I didn't want that. I understand that not everything will be used at the time when we need. I want to be able to have my refrigerator and furnace to run. We can also have some lights on and tv or radio. We also have a sump pump to run and that was my main concern of having a generator.

This is like having insurance, glad to have it when it's time to use it.

I am a novice when it comes to electricity. I've wired a few outlets and switches, but that's about it. I read the manual and did what it suggested. I also watched a few YouTube videos. The images with the red and black wires hanging out of the service panel shows the panel before I wired in the ten transfer switch circuits. The second image shows the panel after I wired in the circuits. There is also an image of the mounted 30 amp connector. I probably spent about five hours total installing the transfer switch. Now I need to buy a generator!

Update 9/4/19: I bought the generator and this switch works flawlessly! What a bargain!

I paid somebody to install this. I should not have. I learned everything I thought I needed to know in order to do it myself and watched as he did it to make sure everything was done how I wanted...should have done it myself it really is as simple as so many other reviewers already said.

It was up and running in no time. Everything I want to run with a generator is 120 volt so I'll even be able to hook up smaller generators using an L5-20P to L14-30R adapter (it bridges the hots so you get 120V on both sides of the transformer and can run any 120V circuit the generator can handle).

I did have a use for customer service. A couple plastic parts that hold the breaker and reset button against the face of the box were broken upon arrival. I contacted customer service on I think it was a Friday and had the necessary replacement parts + instructions on Tuesday. 5 minute fix at that point.

The only part I had to supply was the 10/3 with ground to run from the transfer switch to the inlet box. I paid $90 for 50 feet and used every last inch of it. Don't short yourself to try to save money, I would have been happy with having purchased 100 feet ahead of time to have one continuous wire without having to sweat the placement and put the inlet box a foot higher than I ideally wanted.

Do it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Switch A Dosen't Work

The switch box looks sturdy. The installation is also easy. However, the switch A line has no power output at the in-line on position. I did not test it with the generator on position. The QA/QC team in the ReIiance might not do the good job on each item of the product. I have ordered the same item and started to return the existing one. It'll take my additional time and efforts to uninstall the existing transfer switch box and the reinstall the new one. I can only give one star this time and will update the rating after receiving, installing, and testing the second transfer switch box.

Received this unit and installed this week. Unit arrived with some visible shipping damage. Called
Reliance Controls and they were great. Shipped the damaged parts at no cost to me. After installation
I was able to use 8 of the 10 circuits in my test which transferred the load as expected. Waiting on parts
to finish the other 2 circuit connections. Very good metering of load on each leg. Instructions were
incredibly straight forward and easy to understand. Total installation time for a non electrician (me) was
about 3 hours. Super manual transfer switch for the do it yourselfer. Update, parts came in, installed
and all 10 circuits work great. Thanks
Reliance Controls for a quality product

4.0 out of 5 stars Was easy to install if your comfortable with electrical
Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2020

It's a pretty straight forward install process. Read the instructions carefully, especially the suggestions as to load distribution as this will be important. The unit quality is very good, although two of my circuit breakers were broken when I opened the unit. I called tech support and they sent replacements right out to me, although I was able to install the unit and use it without them. When I got them they were very easy to remove and replace. I got the round circuit breaker style unit(like on boats and aircraft I guess) but if I had to buy over again I'd spend the extra and get the squreD type so if you burn a breaker out you'll be able to replace it locally, and they are quicker to remove and install. That being said , I lose my power a lot, I mean like ten time a year and anywhere from 4 hrs. to a week. A whole day without line power is typical several times a year. This unit worked flawlessly every time since installed, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone like me that doesn't want to spend thousands on an auto generator unit, as nice as they are. It's a quality device and a great value, and customer support is very good.
