Summer Rain
4.0 out of 5 starsA Great Sequel

Spoiler warning for this review.
Living Dead in Dallas represents a lot of change for the Sookie Stackhouse series- it shows the shift from Sookie being an innocent bystander to a vampire lover’s chaotic existence, to being an active participant in vampire affairs. It has the same amazing style as before, showcasing Mrs. Harris’ witty writing and effervescent descriptions, with growth into the supernatural world surrounding Bon Temps.
The new twist on the story is one I absolutely adore. I loved seeing little details like how vampires travel through airlines- the innovative Anubis Air- and how specific hotels cater to them. I love that the story dives into Sookie’s new job as the telepath for Area Five, and the level of respect that comes with that. I can see her growing in confidence and ability, even running into another Telepath- which was a fantastic treat.
But at the heart of it, it’s the same old Sookie Stackhouse. The Sookie that won’t take any bull, that speaks bluntly back to beloved characters like Eric or Stan, the Sookie that gets herself right into the thick of it and then has to struggle her way out. She still has her kind heart, as well, seeing as how she dealt with Godfrey. The titular location, Dallas, adds a breath of fresh air and it’s lovely to see how Sookie handles that. I also loved seeing more strife against the vampires, with a new extremist religious group that become the main antagonists in the novel.
My one complaint over this novel, which brought it from a 5/5 to a 4/5, is the plot convenience. This is a personal pet peeve of mine. There were several parts of this novel that gave me pause because it just seemed a little too good to be true, a little too believable. Writers, of course, craft their stories however they want- but it is easy to read when a solution pops out of thin air without enough explanation to cover it. It took me out of the story a few times, and it didn’t quite hold or flow as well as the first novel, bringing my score down for my personal enjoyment of the sequel.
Still, this book is an absolute star. I still hold this book to a very high standard, coming from one of my favorite authors. I can’t recommend this series enough, and have already jumped immediately into the third book, Club Dead. Can’t wait to continue reviewing my way through this series!

3.0 out of 5 starsEh. Decent second book. Read it b/c you can't get to the awesome later installments without it.
Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2014
Most people who have read this series, at the very least, like portions of it.

They like the first 3 or 4 installments, but then they get bored, or after the 3rd or 4th book, the series really started picking up for them.

I’m weird, I guess. I pretty much liked the entire series right up until the end. Sure, how much I liked each book varied—for example, except for the last book, this one is my LEAST favorite, but that’s not uncommon, what with this being book 2 and all. It definitely has its good moments (like when Eric gets shot and that thing happens that is hilarious and awesome), but overall . . . MEH.

Living Dead in Dallas begins with Sookie finding a dead Lafayette in Andy Bellefleur’s car in the parking lot of Merlotte’s one morning. What do you mean, “a dead Lafayette?!” you ask. “Lafayette can’t be DEAD, he’s still going strong in season 6 of True Blood!”

Let me introduce you to a little game I like to play called “Same and NOT the Same.”

SO. Andy’s been drinking, ’cause you know, being a cop is hard, and Sookie has to call Portia (his sister) to come and pick him up.

Leaving his car at the bar.

For persons unknown to leave a dead body in.

But why would someone want to kill Lafayette? He’s so much fun!

Yeah, well, he’s also got a BIG mouth. A BIG mouth that he’s apparently been running about a house he’d been going to, “where there were all kinds of sex hi-jinks going on,” and someone didn’t like that. Someone didn’t like that a lot.

So poor Sook’s stressed out about that.

Then when she gets home from work that night, Bill tells her that she’s been “summoned” by Eric.

Better and better.

The next evening they drive to Shreveport, where Eric informs her that she’s been LOANED out to vampires in Dallas who could use some assistance of the telepathic variety. AND while Sookie’s understandably upset about Eric’s high-handedness, there’s really not much she can do about it—she did, after all, agree to help him any time he wanted, in exchange for turning over human culprits to human authorities, rather than taking matters into their vampire hands. I suppose it’s her own fault for not specifying she wouldn’t stand for being loaned out. You live and you learn, I guess.

Freakin’ vampires.

And that is how Bill and Sookie wind up on an airplane bound for Dallas.

I’ve already said that this is probably my least favorite book in the series until you get to end, and that is b/c . . . while I don’t have a problem with kink, I do have a problem with gross, middle-aged, pervy kink. And this group is just . . . blech.

I also have a problem with centuries-old, pedophile vampires. Actually, I have a problem with ALL types of pedophiles, so even contemplating one that has been doing what they do FOR SO FREAKING LONG<——well, clearly, it’s upsetting.

AND all of the Bill and Sookie relationship angst from book 1 grows and flourishes in book 2 (and relationship angst is not something you want growing and flourishing). This is also the book where you get your first glimpse of how self-absorbed Bill can be.

This book is also where you get your first glimpse of how attentive someone-not-Bill can be.

*winks*

And that’s really the only sell point for this installment. Well, that, and it’s necessary to read this one to get to the good ones. BOTTOMLINE—too much perv for one book. Read it b/c you can’t move forward without it, but go into it knowing that there is some seriously disturbing stuff going on. That is all.

5.0 out of 5 stars The second adventure

In this story Sookie and Bill travel to Dallas to investigate the disappearance of a vampire. Sookie doesn't want to go, but Eric reminds her of her promise in the last book that if he didn't harm the human who was stealing from him (turned out it was a vampire) that she waould help him and this is the calling in of that promise. The mystery this go-around is fairly straight forward, unlike the last time, and thus, at least to me, was not the driving of the book. In fact it wasn't until I opened the book to find a name that I realized there was two mysteries in this book. The first was the disappearance of the vampire, the other was the death of the bar cook, Lafayette.
To me the book is driven by the additional facts about vampire life, now they are out of their coffins and mainstreaming, and Sookie. I loved how the vampires travel in their coffins in a special guarded plane company, and how they have hotels tailored just for vampires. Sookie learns more about her abilities, how to both control and use them, and meets other telepath, Barry, one who appears in another book, which I really liked. This book also introduced Sookie's nemsis, the Fellowship of the Sun.
I laughed at the universal silly nature of people, both supernatural and not. I cried at the cruel nature of people, especially when Bill seems to be pushing Sookie away. I rated it as a five based on its comparison to later books, but realistically it was more of a four-and-a-half because it just didn't zing.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of my favorite series in book or TV

I read most of the books before the series came out, and now I am re-reading the books since the publication of the series finale this year (plus getting them on my kindle as my paperbacks are annoying to read)

I read Anne Rice vampire novels and anita blake novels prior to these; of the 3 series I love this one the best. Sookie is not the tough chick that anita blake is, she is more normal in that respect. she can read minds, and we find later in the series she has other special things (not gonna spoil it for you here). I found the world and characters interesting, especially sookie. The fact that sookie is a different sort of heroine (she is not a gun wielding kick butt, I-am-better-than-a-man anita blake type) she is not afraid to get help from men-folk, also she is not a super smart genius like some heroines, but she is not stupid although sometimes she pretends to be stupid because the townsfolk think she is a dumb blonde. also she is not rich and does not have some posh job, she is a waitress. seemingly very ordinary in many respects other than her ability to read minds. all of this makes sookie refreshingly different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice sequel to first book

This book I was looking forward too because second season of True Blood was my favorite season so far. Especially Sookie's time in Dallas. That being said I knew there would be some differences but just didn't know how much til I started to read and let me say this is book has to be my favorite so far.

I loved the inclusion of other supernaturals in this book but they are more hidden where as the vampires are all about out in the open. I wish they could have incorporated more of the side characters in this book into the series would have made for some interesting TV.

And can I say I just love how in the books Eric and Sookie's relationship is blossoming more, If you haven't guessed by now but I am all for Team Eric. How can you not love that hot viking vampire.

That being said excellent continuation of this series and on I go to book 3 again a must read for True Blood Fans out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to the series

I like how this book branched out to another state already in the 2nd book, whereas most books use the whole "traveling out of state" thing to revive their story line later on when they're running out of juice.

It was nice to meet new vampires, and I love the concept of the Fellowship of the Sun, because you just KNOW something like that would actually pop up if vampires were real and legal.

I love this series, and this book keeps me wanting to read more, like any book worth its salt should. :-)

I really loved the Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer and did not think I would ever like any books as much as those....well then I found Sookie Stackhouse books. Love the idea that the same characters are in all the books and you get to know them and you feel a part of the "action" and storyline. I just cannot wait to read the next book to see who is fighting who and who is Sookie's main squeeze. These are great books.

Beautifully written. The author is able to have you picturing every character and scene as if you were there. But she does so with so few words. I loved her writing style; funny, poetic, at times crude. She is able to perfectly portray the human condition, making this story shockingly relatable. This is just a wonderful series. I don't like fiction or the recent vampire craze, but I can't put these down.

It's hard for me to separate one book from the entire story, but I'm wondering why the vampires have never tried to take revenge on the off shoot of the religious group that killed so many of their kind? I really thought that they would use Sookie to find the terrorists, but mainstreaming seems to have been the only course. It's not like vampires to be the victims and not try to find the people responsible.
