4.0 out of 5 starsThe Good, The Bad, The Ugly: Running Blind
Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2017
There was one thing Lee Child hadn’t done with the Jack Reacher books. He did it with Running Blind though. Making it a “who’s the killer” type of story was the right move. Reacher can’t keep taking conspiracies. See what else I think of the book.

The Ugly: Not so much something wrong with the story or anything, but it’s more with the design. There is a cover to the book cover that was the wrong thing. It depicts a desolate road with snow all over it in the woods. Has nothing to do with the book. It gives off the wrong impression. A classic case of don’t judge the book by the cover.

The Bad: Somewhat predictable is the best way to describe this book. Is the right way? No. But it is the way to describe it. Child made the killer the most predictable part of the book. You could tell who it was once they showed up in the book.

The Good: As I said in my opening, the story is what made this book. It was the best story in the first four books. Definitely a step up from the last book. Keep that in mind when you read it.

Final Thoughts: So far, there has only been one miss the Jack Reacher stories. This one isn’t the best one, but it’s worth it. Give it a try why don’t you.

2.0 out of 5 starsBig and smart? or just big?
Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2018
Reacher is BIG, we all know that. But he's also smart - about law enforcement, crime, basic street smarts, etc. In this book Childs gets Reacher into his desired situation by making him the stupidest person on earth. When charged by the FBI and NYPD with crimes that could put him in prison for life, he refuses to get a lawyer because - he's innocent. There's a word for innocent people who don't have lawyers: they're called "CONVICTS". And that's not even close to the dumbest thing that he does. Then we have an FBI forensics team that doesn't know that covering a human body in house paint will kill it. And an ending that depends on hypnosis as a "body-snatchers" mind control tactic. A hypnotized person will not do anything that she wouldn't do otherwise. And how many people would voluntarily swallow their tongues? I think I just lucked out on my first four books in the series. This is the second really stupid one, and it's going to be the last.

4.0 out of 5 stars Child does a great job with this Reacher ‘detective crime’ story...

Book Review - There are at least several stories going on here in Lee Child’s “Running Blind” and Jack Reacher is stuck in the middle of both of them! Child does a great job with this ‘detective crime’ story. His story telling was intriguing and climatic. The police/FBI investigation stuff is wonderful; many of the investigative clues really jump out and make readers wonder, but some other clues will slip right on by because Child’s writing for this novel was clever and intuitive. The FBI ends up being the bad guys in this one, because they abused their power and trap Reacher into helping them. Then after he does their investigative work for them, they try to threaten him into some unfair-type of an agreement, but Reacher was too smart for them. I loved the dialogue of Reacher “out-maneuvering” their pushy threats. Child also surprised me by including a serious love interest for Reacher in this story which put him into a considerable quagmire. Reacher wins the love of his life in the story, but isn't sure about the life he loves. He had an extremely difficult decision to make. The very things that made him so desirable also make him unattainable. Readers can guess what he does since there are a dozen or more books following this one. His choice leaves readers of the story, and him, very sad. Other than that, Running Blind was one of Lee Child’s better Jack Reacher novels. The Reacher character really shined in this early book and it lead me to be a continuous reader of the series. A wonderful ‘Jack Reacher figures it out’ read…

4.0 out of 5 stars Which arm you want me to break first?

Book 3 of the compelling Jack Reacher series, this one finds our hero once again misunderstood and eyed for a crime he has nothing to do with. After he sorts that out, Reacher decides to help in the investigation to round up the correct suspect.

You know for a guy who essentially lives off the grid, he sure gets swept up into all kinds of conflict simply by walking around minding his own business. I’m assuming there’s plenty of other times in which Reacher visited some city and nothing of note happened, and while that wouldn’t be too fun to read about, it would make Reacher a little more believable. I mean, this guy is a magnet for bad guys and their plots, and I’m only on the third book! Seriously though, I love this character, he’s admirable, strong, self-reliant, capable, and kind-of unstoppable in his own way. He’s like justice rolling into town. It’s enjoyable to watch this guy move through our world fixing stuff as he goes and punishing the bad guys. I could see this becoming a serialized TV show at some point, but I don’t know if they could improve upon what Child has been able to craft in the books. They are almost the perfect blend of mystery and action, the definition of a page-turner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Mr. Child

In this fourth novel in the long running Jack Reacher series we find events picking up soon after the conclusion of “Tripwire”. Reacher our nomadic hero is being domesticated by young girlfriend Jodie Garber. He’s uncomfortably trying to adapt to being a homeowner after inheriting former boss and mentor General Leon Garber’s Hudson River house and it’s not working for him. After Reacher dispenses a little street justice to a couple of low level mob extortionists at a NYC restaurant while under FBI surveillance he’s coerced by the feds to help solve a serial murder case with Army ties.

“Running Blind” is classic Lee Child and the story moves with a brisk pace with Reacher helping the Bureau under duress while wrestling with his relationship with Jodie and the loss of his rambling lifestyle and feelings for an attractive FBI agent. There’s a lot more introspection and decidedly less action than the previous three books but the mystery is good and I was left guessing up until the surprise conclusion. All said and done this book is a solid effort and will not disappoint fans of the series.

What I've done is read some more recent books in this series, returning to fill in the blanks. In case you're wondering, this works well. I do think Child has developed a more sophisticated take on Reacher in later works, but I won't disparage simpler or more naive themes. Child always seems to select a social issue I can care about. In this work, we can include (spoiler alert!), how to 'leave a lover,' but mainly, military supply chain product theft, mafia manipulation in Manhattan and New York, and the way investigators and informants are abused and used in the U.S. military and intelligence branches. All I can say is, once again, thanks, Lee!

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and fast moving action novel for those who are Jack Reacher fans.

The last few years I have become a fan of the Jack Reacher novels. I just finished reading Running Blind (by Lee Child) and found this story to be a compelling read. It seems Jack just cannot just live his wandering life in peace without some law enforcement agency following him. In this case it is the F.B.I.

Without going into too much detail and spoil it for the reader, this tale actually begins after Jack beats up two extortion thugs who work for an organized crime leader. However, unknown to Jack, he has been under surveillance by the F.B.I. because of the murder of three women. He knew these women when he was an U.S. Army investigator. The twists and turns in this novel keep you turning the pages to find out who is doing the murders.

Like all Jack Reacher novels this one moves along at a quick pace and even though I think the author Lee Child’s novels are way too long, this one being 519 page, it is still an entertaining read.

Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Soul: An old warrior’s poetic tribute).

4.0 out of 5 stars Strictly for Reacher fans

When Jack Reacher sees a owner of a recently opened Italian restaurant is squeezed by local thugs, he can't help himself from interfering. A resourceful Reacher is able to rough up the goons without putting himself or the restaurant owner at risk. But FBI takes him under arrest as soon as he reaches his home. He is the prime suspect in a string of murders involving army women who had filed sexual harassment complaints. The profile of the killer matches Reacher.

In the fourth book of the series, Lee Child casts Reacher in a role which he has long left behind; the role of an investigator. This time around, Reacher is not working for the military but teamed up with FBI. Like the earlier novels, Lee directly hurls the reader into the vortex of the events without wasting time. With a killer to catch, Reacher is running against time. This helps in building the pace and Lee can handle fast paced action with words. The events might be unbelievable but you are carried away. There are many times the investigation is sidetracked. This is the downside of the plot.

Strictly for Reacher fans.

While this is not great literature, (hence the 4 stars), it is by Lee Child. So that means page-turning action. And if you have ever read a Lee Child book, you know you are going to get . . .
* A great (can't stop reading) story. I have devoured 7 books in the last two weeks
* Crisp dialog
* Captivating intrigue and conflict
* A believable hero with phenomenal skills.
* Very well described action.
* A satisfying resolution that is not necessarily happy happy; they lived happily ever after.
Bottom line these are consistently great reads. But be warned . . . one book leads to another and another . . .

I loved the story the author wove with the characters. It went a little slow with the twists and turns. If you like drama, mystery, and unexpected thrills, this book will satisfy your expectations. I rated this book a four star because of the places it was drug out and could have moved faster!

4.0 out of 5 stars Complex relationships with women makes this a somber tale
Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2013

Our hero, Jack Reacher, always treats women well, and author Lee Child writes strong women characters that often match our hero in intelligence and determination. For the first time Child presents us with a really nasty female. At the same time Reacher is shown sympathetically dealing with rape victims and their long term problems. The book has a claustrophobic feel, as it is set in the city, Reacher wrestles with the horrors of home ownership, a love that might lead to real commitment, and a "locked room" room puzzle of a mystery. One can hardly wait until Reacher is back on the road and far from New York.
As always the language is what helps mesmerize readers. "He killed the motor and heard nothing but fog hanging in the air and the crunch of boots on his driveway." Then the reader learns the physics of attacking with a bat, done with dispassionate seriousness that makes Reacher intellectually appealing while he beats bullies half to death.
