Erudite, but not really under the flesh

Machiavelli is an intriguing character; one of the truly brilliant minds that the Italian high renaissance spawned. This book gives a factual account of his exploits and his literary achievements, but sadly it does not really explore the life and the soul of the man. Writer, scholar, poet, diplomat, outcast and visionary, Machiavelli was a man not easily described by mere facts and dates. Unfortunately, that's mainly what the book gives you. I would have loved to be invited into the real mind of the man, whose writings influated so strongly on political science, but whose poetry and prose and life in general hints at a much deeper and more complex life.
