The first part of this book is what makes me reread it over and over again. Then after reading the first part you need part 2 to eliminate the emotional rollercoaster of pain and sorrow that was ash's life. Kenyon really out did herself with this one. It was the first book I ever read from her and led me down the dark hunter series with great expectations that were always met. While the other books are great none venture or even come close to the darkness of Acheron.
I recommend you go to a nice quiet spot and allow Acheron to take you back 11000 years to his life as a human.
Grab some tissues and brace yourself as you're immediately thrown into a powerful story of loss, abuse, misery, regret, and love.

2.0 out of 5 starsVery dry and the last 1/3 of the book was awful!
Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2022
This story had the potential to be something great. It floundered, however, and it left me absolutely let down.
There is a lot of content and yes, the abuse included is absolutely heart wrenching... but within limit. This story has the horrendous flaw of telling and not showing, and as a result the story was not as emotional or as fluid as it had the potential to be.
At first, it was completely understandable since it was a retelling from journals. The second POV was better as it focused on Acheron, but still suffered from telling too dryly. I found the story interesting but just could not Feel anything for his trials, despite having lived through some myself and KNOWING what he must be feeling. It just didn't convey the depth of his situation.
The last chunk was horrendous. Using the enemies to lovers trope, it failed in really setting this up. He was misunderstood, but not... cold and indifferent and yet loving and somehow addicted to the toxic female... AGAIN. She was haughty and stubborn, and yet the writer tried so hard to make her likeable. She had no trauma, not real trials but somehow we are expected to relate to her feeling wronged?? And despite having had a good childhood, was not a compassionate or thoughtful person. Quick to anger, and yet somehow mothering and attentive??? it just didn't flow.
The entire relationship was forced, and the ending abominable! He is the god of destruction who destroys nothing... his word is the will of the universe and yet somehow despite declaring aloud that he would never be a prisoner, or bound to another... he ends up a prisoner! Like, What? shouldn't there be repercussions for his word being broken, like there would be if his mom were free?
AND it is Sooo LONG, which if it was well written would be a + not a negative, but this feels like time I can now never get back!
I have heard a lot of positive reviews, but I disagree. It is only passably written and i would not recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long Read but so worth it - Excellent!

** spoiler alert ** EXCELLENT READ!!!! Long but so worth it - Sherrilyn Kenyon is brilliant in writing Acheron's story. This book brought out all kinds of emotions all throughout reading this book, sadness, happiness, madness, revengeful, hatefulness, excitement, and over joy-ness when it came time to kick some ass.

All through this series I have loved Acheron, now I love him even more after reading this book. This book told the story of how Acheron was conceived into the human world and how he was shunned from the moment he was born. It told of the cruelty that was done to him as they turned him into a slave whore and It tells how he becomes into his Godhood on his 21st birthday.

Acheron - the God Apostolos, Harbinger and son of Apollymi the Destroyer - his will is the will of the Universe and the final fate of all.

After reading the first part of this book, I was so glad Apollymi took her wrath out and killed Acheron's father and everyone of them gods that wanted him dead and most of all, I was like cheering her on when she took out Acheron's human father and all the people who lived in that kingdom.

I hated Artemis for her two faced ways, she is such a bee-otch. I couldn't believe that she could say she loved Acheron and then stand by and watch her brother Apollo kill and gut him right in front of her.

I loved Tory from the beginning, I loved how she wasn't ashamed of Acheron because of his past and that she loved him for who and what he was no matter the baggage. I love the part when Acheron is playing the guitar in Sanctuary and dedicates and sings a song to her and then afterwards goes to her and kisses her - I totally melted in Awe.

Also the reason everyone who looks at Acheron and desires him is because on the day that Acheron was born in the human realm, the midwife who delivered him happen to be Apollymi's sister Epithymia (God of Desire) and she touched him and was the main reason he was treated like he was.

I have great respect for Apollymi even though she is the Goddess of Destruction, my heart went out to her as a mother who would do anything for her child. You know she really loved Acheron when she took Tory's soul after Tory was killed and then turned around and offered a way for her to remain with Acheron by giving her part of her powers and sending her back to her body so she could feed from Acheron and become vampire like Acheron and at the same time free Acheron from Artemis hold. I was like hell yeah.

I loved how all the Dark Hunters stood behind Acheron to help him like Torys friends. And best of all, the wedding at the end was precious.

However, now I'm curious to find out what will happen to Nick and how Artemis will screw him over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long awaited and well worth it...

Finally getting the story of Ash is hard to put into words, I don't want to give anything away. I could hardly believe that the veil of mystery surrounding his life would be lifted, but here it certainly was.

While it is difficult to endure the torture of such a beloved character his strength of will is an inspiration and knowing how he pulls through in the end makes it easier. Don't miss this book because the beginning is difficult, because the joy in the end is that much more sweet.

Spoiler alert....

I would have liked to have seen a more descriptive and thorough end to the man he knew as "father" however, that was my only disappointment. With as much suffering as he caused our precious Acheron I would have liked to have seen him bleed a bit rather than it just being implied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally Acheron's Story

Acheron is definitely my favorite character in the entire Dark-Hunter Series and I am so happy to have finally read his story. Just like the man, Acheron's story was just as intense. I loved learning about the mysterious, secretive, sexy man and how he became the all powerful God. I thought the cruelty the Dark Hunter Zarek experienced during his human life was the most awful thing I could have imagined until reading Ash's story. Oh my, the cruelty of Ash's human life was the most atrocious thing I have ever read. Kenyon definitely has a knack for describing suffering & punishment. I was sick after reading what was done to Acheron by those who should have loved and protected him and I don't even want to start on Artemis. But all and all I was quite intrigued and Acheron will definitely go down as my favorite in the series.........

5.0 out of 5 stars Kudos to Kenyon!

The first thing that I read by Sherrilyn Kenyon was her graphic novels. I was enthralled with the character of Ash and thrilled to find out that she had recently released a book all about him! Of course, I ordered it immediately and eagerly anticipated its arrival. It did not disappoint. Before reading Acheron, Ash had come across as self-sufficient, but not self-absorbed; confident, but not cocky; distant, but kid and willing to do anything to help, and inexplicably desirable by pretty much everyone, even the chaste (or at least she was) goddess, Artemis. I tip my hat to Sherrilyn Kenyon because all of the things about Ash’s character that made him mysterious and hard to define came clear through reading this book. It is a superbly told story. I agree that it is graphic and perhaps difficult to take in the beginning, but I saw it as necessary. Without seeing what Acheron went through as a child, youth, and even throughout much of his adult life, it would be impossible to understand the complexities of his character.

The story of Acheron is very long but held my attention from beginning to end. You get such a detailed account of everything from his birth to his happily ever after, and still you're left with a little cliffhanger at the end that leaves you saying "what's gonna happen next". The first half presented us with an unsure, hurt & reluctantly proud human and the remainder of the book showed us a strong but very insecure Atlantean God. It was a story of overcoming the demons of one's past in order to create a better future.

Due to it's length I found that the audio book was easier & a more exciting means to enjoy the story. The narrator does a great job of formulating unique voices for each character which leaves you free to sit back, visualize the scenes & fully immerse yourself into the story; so much so that you don't notice the actual length of the story. Though long, every detail is relevant to the overall story. Not only did we learn a lot about our mysterious leader of the Dark Hunters, we also got treated to a reunion of sorts. I think this was an admirable undertaking & successful accomplishment by the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best!

Of all the Dark Hunter books, this one is the best by far! After twelve stories, i was impatient to learn about Acheron and the author certainly delivered! The book is divided into two parts, his past and the present. I'll admit the first was hard to get through, great pain and unbelievable suffering; but as I finished part two I realized that Ash's story is perfect. This is a character worthy of supporting a book series of this size.
This book can be a "stand alone" but for maximum enjoyment really needs to be read as part of a series.

Anything by Sherrilyn Kenyon is awesome. This book is especially good as it's been being built up to over nearly a dozen others. She does such a good job of making you feel you know the characters personally. You feel their pain, you feel their triumph and you're constantly dealing with the irritation of the ever-present daimons not to mention... Artemis.

I just finished rereading the Dark Hunter series and I love them just as much, if not more so, this time around.

Proud Book Reviews
4.0 out of 5 stars *contains spoilers* the past and the present, which has more impact on our relationships?
Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2019

This one off by letting you know that this one spends almost as much time focused on the past as it does the present. So Acheron's life and love stories are played out in full for us.

Firstly, let's recap a few thing's we've learnt about Acheron up to this point:

he's enslaved to Artemis
he's a god
he's Atlantean
he has a shady past he won't share with anyone
he has a twin brother who's immortal like he is
he has a demon daughter
he can bring ppl back from the dead
he's a god killer
his word is final (remember what happened to Nick?)
he's super kind, caring and hates to hurt people
So we go into this book thinking we know what we need to know about Acheron only to learn that we know NOTHING about the poor guy. The first thing we learn about him is that he was born the oldest son of an ancient Greek king. But in actual fact he is the son of god's but placed in the womb of a queen to ensure that he is raised as well as he possibly can. Except because of his eye colour he is not recognised by his "father" and his mother drinks herself to death as a result.

Due to the colour of his eye's his "father" gives him to his "uncle" who takes him to Atlantis and sells him as a whore to make money off of him. After a significant amount of time his sister tries to save him but fails and he get's sent back. Then when his uncle dies he pisses off his father who throws him out to the streets. As a result he ends up back in his home city as a whore and eventually his father finds out and as a result gets locked into a dungeon. His father only cares what happens down there when Styx his twin almost dies because Acheron is trying to kill himself via starvation.

In the end he's able to find a way to live some kind of "life" by bribing his guards with sex to let him out. And that's how he runs into Artemis. At the same time as his sister is being sold to Apollo Acheron ties himself to Artemis. After a lot of pain and anger and on the night Acheron comes into his godly powers Artemis drugs him to the point where he can't save his sister and her son. As a result he is killed in the morning and Acheron's mum's favourite demon dies while trying to save him.

Reading the tragedy of all of this really makes me feel for him. After everything humanity and the gods did to him how can he still be sane? How can he possibly WANT to save humanity from Daimons? O and did I mention Daimons came into creation because of his sister? She was the mistress that was killed at the age of 27 that Apollo loved above all others. If only Artemis hadn't been so selfish and hadn't drugged him maybe Daimons wouldn't have been created in the first place.

Fast forward a millennia and we come across Soteria who believes she's found the location of Atlantis. The one place that holds secrets that could expose Acheron's past that he doesn't want anyone to know. So even though Acheron doesn't like how close Soteria is he needs to save her life from those trying to kill her. And in the mean time discovers that lemonade make's him drunk. I found this part hilarious! I mean how did he go THAT LONG without trying lemonade to discover that it made him drunk?! And to make it even funnier, while drunk he gets into an argument with his demon because he wants to take Soteria back to Atlantis for real but Simi manages to convince him to only make a 3D image of it that Acheron can take Soteria on a tour through.

I mean, since when did the demon with impulse control issues become the more reasonable one? And Soteria's comment about "thank god I returned to normal size when you passed out" was pretty good too.

All the banter between Soteria and Acheron is great because it shows that no matter how all powerful, kind etc you are there will always be someone who doesn't like you and will do things just to spite/ piss you off. And for Acheron, that's Soteria. During this journey we also discover that Acheron plays with a young boy on Saturday morning's on PS3 every week, referees kids basketball and also builds houses for the homeless.

Like how do those traits marry up with our fearless warrior (who only seems brought down by lemonade), and then also the abused boy who couldn't do anything without offending his family. This book was one full of contradictions and inaccuracies between people. And every time I read this I'm reminded that we only know the parts of people that they are willing to share.

And I know I for one am very closed off about sharing who I am. So how could I possibly expect others to be any more open? I mean you would be lucky to get me to say hi to someone I don't know in a social way without having had a few glasses of alcohol. And even then I'll be slow to start off, I won't initiate the conversation and will find it hard to respond to the person trying to talk to me.
