This epic and haunting tune will spark your imagination and transport you to different places, personas, and different eras as each member sings a different verse. It is well-produced. The music supports the imagery, the vocals and storylines, but it never indulges in annoying overproduction like some recordings do.
Willie Nelson and his buddies Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash bring Jimmy Webb's great reincarnation song "Highwayman" to life. Each singer takes a verse in turn, giving each of the narrator's described lifetimes a unique flavor that helps build the story to its compelling conclusion. We saw and heard Willie and his friends perform this song live at the first Farm Aid concert in 1985 with Glen Campbell filling-in for Kris Kristofferson. It was an unforgettable high point in a great show; and this recording, while not quite as electrifying as the live performance we heard that day, remains one of the best interpretations of Webb's song you are likely to hear. Highly recommended.
