This movie "The American President" is a pretty good movie, which I have seen it at least 25 years ago.

Quite unexpectedly, the DVD " The American President" I purchased can only be played smoothly for about the first 50 min of the movie, and after that, the movie would stop and remained frozen at a certain movie scene without forward playing. Even if I tried to use another PC to play the DVD, the same situation would occur. I later found that when I skipped to, say, the location of 70 min of the DVD, the DVD can be played smoothly again until the end of the movie.

Apparently, the DVD I purchased got a bad track of DVD around the 50 min location of the movie. I purchased a flawed DVD item.

As for the other DVD movie entitled " Dave" I purchased along with the this DVD "The American President", it can be played smoothly.

Trust the reviews on this DVD. This is a great movie, but the picture aspect is so bad it is not worth buying. The picture (even though widescreen) is about 1/4 the size of the TV screen - huge black spaces on all 4 sides of the screen with a little picture in the middle. Even my wife, who never notices anything about picture or surround sound on any movie, said she can't watch it because she can hardly make out the people - we have a 52" TV. I'm not a hater, this is just a really bad job of transferring an old move to DVD format. I did manually change the aspect on my TV to enlarge the picture which did work and I was able to fill the screen, but it's a bit like zooming in on a low res image, it's not as clear but at least we could stand to watch it once.

Poor quality video

This was not a good item. It was blurry and the picture did not fit the screen. It was like old movies done in Cinemascooe. The FBI warning at the end was particularly blurred. With a good tv I could see the video OK, but the tv was correcting for the blurred images. Where did this come from? Was it a pirated copy, a poor reproduction from some lab? The label started peeling off as I opened the box. This is clearly not an original.

Make sure you understand what this means. We did not, we always made sure to look for Widescreen.
The ratio creates a small widescreen in the center of the screen, so small it is difficult to enjoy the movie.
I will pay more attention next time, we would return if we could but it is not defective.
We love these two movies, would have been a nice addition to our collection, now paper weights.

I enjoy the movies but the quality is just not there. It's been a little while since I watched the DVD but if I remember correctly, one of the movies doesn't even fill up my 46" flat panel either way. Because of that we used the TV's zoom feature which made the picture even worse.
I absolutely can NOT recommend buying this version, even at the awesome price I got it for. If you just want the movies to say you have them, buy this. If you really want to enjoy the movies, buy them separate and get better quality recordings.

We have the video tapes of these movies and wanted to replace them with DVD. The movie stories themselves are excellent. However, the quality of the DVD picture is poor. Dave has a grainy/blurry picture and The American President picture has to be adjusted to fit the TV screen and even then the fit is poor. Should have just kept the video tapes and used them for as long as the VCR works.

2008 "reissue" is the old DVD in a new package

Buyer beware: the 2008 "reissue" of The American President is simply the original DVD release in a new clamshell case. Although the new package describes this release as anamorphic (implying a new and hopefully better transfer than the awful original DVD release) it is not. You'll get the same, poor quality original release DVD. It IS widescreen, but in 4x3 letterbox format with a lot of artifacts. The movie is great, a real charmer, but it's hard to watch with such low picture quality. WHV has announced a Blu-Ray release of the film in late 2012, but I've seen nothing about a good quality DVD release to come. Four stars for the movie plus zero stars for the picture quality & misleading info about the transfer averages out to two stars. Skip this release.
