I read this book a long time ago, when I was a child.
Recently, I have reread it in my quest to build a set of books that are modest and suitable for my children.
This book passes the test with flying colors
It is all three: modest, conservative, and kosher.
There are very few details in the text that would date the book, and it is 8-year-olds acting like 8-year-olds (not like anguished middle-aged alcoholics, as are so popular for characters in children's fiction these days).
A lot of the things are also for parents, because many of the situations in the book probably resonate with our own experience of raising children.
This book is a Newberry award winner, and it is just as good as/advisable to read with "Ramona and her Father."
Verdict: Recommended highly, even at the new price. (Is not that you would need to buy a new copy, because there are millions of secondhand copies in existence owing to the popularity of this book.)
Also, the Hebrew version of this book is available.
