A Caress of Twilight follows Merry Gentry and her gaggle of hunky man meat through another combination of twisted sidhe court politics and supernatural detective adventure. No, the queen’s disposition hasn’t improved. Yes, Merry gets plenty of action from her sexy, brooding, conflicted boy toys. And most of it happens from the confines of her kinky—er, dinky one-bedroom apartment, a.k.a. Grand Central Station thanks to the fey ability to use any normal mirror as a communication device without announcing themselves.

Merry is learning that tough decisions are required of an aspiring candidate for the Unseelie Court throne. Her suitors are there to guide her, of course, providing wisdom between banging sessions, where each are racing to see who can make her pregnant first and become king by Merry’s side. It’s a hard job (yes, I said it), but someone has to do it, and who better than a cast of ungodly (or in some cases, godly) gorgeous men who’ve been sexually repressed for the last thousand years? It’s no wonder most of the story occurs within her apartment, because I don’t think the poor girl could walk if she wanted to.

The story starts and stops, which is fine because in between we learn more about her suitors: Darkness Doyle, Green Galen, Perma Frost, Little Kitto, Unrifled Rhys, and a new micro suitor that I won’t spoil for you. We also learn more about Merry, her past, and the depth of her powers, setting her up to be a formidable queen indeed.

All in all, if you liked the first book in the series, you won’t be disappointed with this one, if only sympathetically exhausted for the protagonist.

The story continued right after the first book. The aspect of Meredith slept with the guards to get pregnant weird me out a little. This was the first time I ever read a plot where a heroine was some kind of polygamy. She loved Frost as well as Galen but it seemed like Doyle was the one that proper for a king. And now that Rhys got his power back and changed, I wonder if his personality going to change much.

I enjoyed the book but sometimes some chapters contained too much of information. I can’t put my fingers on but I felt almost bored sometimes.

Anyway I’m going to read the next book right away.

She has done a fertility spell for another Fey who was cast out from the Seelie Court for dissatisfying the king but still Merry is not pregnant. What can she do? Unfortunately a magical creature is after the cast out fey and Merry must save her and everyone who comes in contact with it. How can she do so much and save everyone who matters? How can she be safe herself? She must figure out how to save everyone before it becomes too late.

Ok, book #2 in the Merry Gentry series!

I still am a little hesitant with this series, just because I see some seriously mixed reviews. Between my Goodreads friends, real-life friends, and other bloggers...there really is no consistency.

That being said...I really did like the second book.

I felt more comfortable in A Caress of Twilight than I did in A Kiss of Shadows, mostly because the main characters we've finally met and gotten to know more as well as the life of being a sidhe.

I've read fantasy books before that revolve around the fae (mostly Karen Marie Moning's Fever series), so I understood most of it. But the first book did have a lot of important information that I probably didn't pay enough attention to, but now I understand a whole lot more after reading this book.

Ok...

So, Merry is back in LA with all of her guards/lovers. We have Frost (yum), Doyle, Galen, Rhys, Nicca, and Kitto (not a guard but more 'pet'). She is having her fun romps on the sacks with all so far except Doyle and Galen...both for very different reasons. Though, in this book we finally get to the bottom of what's going on with Galen as well as some unexpected turn of events in the sack for our little Miss. Meredith.

Merry and the boys have had to take a step back from the PI business because of the bad stuff going down with the Nameless and some crazy group deaths. Lots of time for plotting and planning without having to go into work for now, huh?! Or maybe, just some extra time for some lovin...yea, not so much really. LOL

We still have our little humor bits here and there, and we even having feelings of love floating in the air.

Merry is definitely a very special heroine. She is very educated and knowledgeable about the faerie life and those that live in it. I love her brain and her personality! Dare I think I like her more than Anita Blake.....no....not yet, but she's could be in the running!

Great book. Laurell K. Hamilton did another great job!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark & Delicious
Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2012

"A Caress of Twilight" was every bit as dark and delicious as "A Kiss of Shadows." I strongly agree with the other reviewers who said that the plot gets weighed down by lengthy explanations and unnecessary conversations. There were at least three conversations that I skimmed over because Meredith just kept saying the same thing over and over again. It made it seem like Hamilton was trying to draw the story line out and I personally would have liked a little less dialog and little more action. (Which ever direction that may be) The only thing that kind of irritated me was Merry's refusal to sleep with Sage. Don't get me wrong, I understand politically why she refused, but I don't understand why she wasn't willing to `take one for the team' in order to cure Galen. I mean......she's sleeping with Nicca who we know is part demi-fey AND she just had sex with Kitto!! Are you seriously telling me that she considers a goblin higher up on the list of sexual partners than a butterfly?? Now--it was definitely wrong of Queen Niceven to send Sage there under false pretense, but I also know how much Merry loves Galen and I was a little taken back that she protested it. I'm also starting to get a little irritated that everyone Merry encounters tries their best to manipulate her; Maeve, Taranis, Niceven, Andais, sometimes the guards, etc. She is beginning to understand what it is to be a Queen and I can tell she's beginning to change into a great leader, but it does become a little predictable which direction the conversation is going to go when she encounters someone new. That's knit picky, but that's how I feel about it.

With that said, this story was great!! One of the things I love about Hamilton's writing is her ability to develop her characters. Even her side characters are so well developed that it's hard not to obsess over them. The story line had just enough action to keep you engaged without being overwhelming and the sex was like Mr. Pib and Red Vines.........it's crazy delicious!!! I love that Meredith pushes herself both mentally and physically. She is a force to be reckoned with and I have a feeling she hasn't even begun to come into all her magic!!

If you enjoyed "A Kiss of Shadows" you will definitely enjoy "A Caress of Twilight." There are a couple of twists that will keep you guessing what's going to happen next!! Can't wait to get started on the next one!!

HALL OF FAMEVINE VOICE
4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Entertainment!

Princess Meredith Nic-Essus is a member of the High Court of Faerie. When she lives in Los Angles, however, as she has for the past three years, Meredith assumes the name and identity of Merry Gentry. Merry works as a P.I. for Jeremy Grey, owner of the Grey Detective Agency, which specializes in "Supernatural Problems, Magical Solutions." She left the faerie world, the mounds at Cahokia, in Illinois, to go into hiding in California when her cousin Cel, the evil heir to the throne, attempted to have her assassinated once too often.

Meredith's Aunt Andais is Queen of Air and Darkness, and has ruled over the Unseelies, (those not of pure fey blood), for over one thousand years. Those who have pure faerie blood are the Seelies, and her uncle Taranis, King of Light and Illusion, reigns over them. Meredith is mortal, half Seelie Court and half Unseelie, (part of her heritage is Brownie). The Queen sent Doyle, the Captain of her Raven Guard, to the West Coast to bring her niece back to the High Court. Meredith was forced to return because Andais finally realized, what was obvious to many, that her only son and heir did not possess the necessary attributes and character to become King. So the Queen placed Prince Cel and Princess Meredith on equal footing. She stipulated that whoever became a parent first would be her successor. Meredith must bear a child before Cel can father one if she wants to wear the crown. The bit about having a child is paramount, although Andais could have handled the situation more delicately. The sidhe have fertility problems. Thus, childbearing is of the utmost importance if the royal line is to continue.

Meredith is finally allowed to escape the political machinations of court life and return to LA. Accompanying her are some of the Queen's hunkiest Ravens, who are instructed to guard her bodily, and to enjoy it. They are to assist her to become pregnant. Wow!! The lucky father-to-be gets to become King. Excellent motivator! Plus Merry is gorgeous, ruby-red hair, and smart to boot. Oh, a goblin is included in the merry mix of immortal men, due to a pact negotiated with Kurag, Goblin King.

Meredith and her firm are contracted, in utmost secrecy, to assist the glamorous, golden goddess of Hollywood, actress Maeve Reed, who turns out to be a Seelie in exile. Ms. Reed once said "No," to King Taranis - thus the exile. She carries a terrible secret, and the King would kill her immediately if the information became known - which is why she is constantly surrounded by bodyguards. To complicate matters, now that Merry and her men have visited the Reed compound, the King might decide they know too much and order a mass assassination.

Just as things begin to get dangerous, in between bedroom interludes with Merry and the Ravens, "The Nameless" are loosed on humanity. They are the most evil elements of Seelie and Unseelie combined, and much has been sacrificed to keep these beings buried and suppressed forever. So, if anyone says that "A Caress of Twilight" is just about S-E-X, they're only partially correct!

The characters, the settings, the Ravens checking-out America and LA for the first time, Hamilton's take on Celtic mythology, are just a blast - pure entertainment! Of course, I am a major Laurell Hamilton fan and truly enjoyed her entire Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. Merry is certainly not Anita, but she is fun. As always, Laurell Hamilton writes dark fantasy like no other. Her descriptions really bring one's imagination to life. I'm hooked and looking forward to reading the next novel in the series.

I am a big fan of LKH's books, the Meredith Gentry books as well as the Anita Blake series. As a fan I'm more inclined to see its virtues as opposed to its flaws. There are equal doses of both here. The action in this book wasn't as fast or furious as its predecessor, A Kiss of Shadows. Having said that, the book was still interesting as it shows Meredith's personal growth into a position of authority as a 'princess' of the sidhe as well as her learning of the political ropes of faerie. In this book you get to see Princess Meredith think and act more like a future queen, instead of simply reacting to the various forces surrounding her.
'Caress' also deals with the many types and levels of prejudice that exist within the realms of faerie. As always LKH is a mistress of detail, her characters themselves and the descriptions of the different brownies, fairies, goblins, etc. are captivating. I enjoyed the physical and verbal interplay between the guards and Meredith. It also seems that she toned down the amount sexual play in this book, which I don't feel she needs to do. The world of faerie is an erotic and sensual world (be it dark or light), I want it to stay that way or be even more so!
The storyline was quite witty and very often I found myself laughing out loud or smiling at the characters reactions. As is the case with LKH's other books, you find yourself quickly entangled in the world that she creates. I couldn't wait to get back and pick up where I'd left off.
Kudos to LKH for the Kitto storyline, here she takes some unprecedented risks and does a great job. I won't tell what, but when you read the scene you'll know what I refer to and will hopefully applaud LKH for her artistic courage.
Like A Kiss, I really, really, really enjoyed the interaction between the princess and Doyle - just wish there was mmm...mmm ...more of it!!! Doyle is my favorite of all her guards, his background and dark depths are fascinating and could rate a book of their own. The other guards seem more like boys in comparison.
The final scene of the books left me wondering, what's next??!!
All in all, the book was good, but not great. I've had "A Kiss", "A Caress" and they've just aroused my appetite for more. Can't wait for the next one!!!

Enter into the Faerie world of Princess "Merry" who is currently in competition for the Unseelie throne. Merry is actually a fascinating character that is coming into her own powers as a faerie and understanding what it means to be a ruler. (If you loved Anita Blake you won't be disappointed with the female protagonist here.)

The political drama in here is very high with 2 worlds (Seelie and Unseelie) contesting each other for power. Merry is tied to both worlds but stands to inherit the Unseelie throne. There is a huge mystery surrounding the relationships Merry has to the characters involved that is cleverly revealed through the political dealings Merry has to endure.

The sex is also at a high level since Merry can only inherit the throne when she becomes pregnant. As a result she has 5 lovers living with her. These men are more than simply concubines however, since they were once worshiped as gods themselves. The scenes are a bit graphic but not overwhelming as the later Anita Blake novels became.

The plot has several twists and well developed characters which make the book a fantastic read. I gave it four stars because a lot of the catch phrases were recycled from the Anita Blake series. The crime scenes are also set up in a way that was a bit too familiar. Overall LKH has definitely paved the way for an exciting series.

Interesting take on the fey an all the political things that go with it.
Merry Gentry and her harem of men work hard unraveling the mystery of what evils thrown at them.
Lots of sex, lots of political fey court stuff (I'm lost most the time, gives me headaches trying to unravel all of it) some mystery and of course some action and bloody consequences.

The actual story it wonderful. It is a bit erotic for my taste but the actual plot is fantastic. However, the way she writes isn't the greatest. It's not terrible but sometimes she is overly repetitive and doesn't use a large array of words. However, despite that she still writes a good book.
