4.0 out of 5 starsPerfect place to start reading Michael Connelly
Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2019
This is my favorite Michael Connelly novel I’ve read so far. Excellently plotted. Rich in character detail. And still unbelievably fast paced. From the ten or so of these books that I’ve read, I’d recommend this as the perfect place to start. The Bosch books that come before are excellent, but slower paced. The Poet, for me, felt a little far-fetched, but Blood Work hits its target dead center.

Admittedly, Connelly still struggles slightly with the romance. Maybe its me, but the love scenes in all the books I’ve read by him just don’t work. I can always hear Barry White playing in my head. Sometimes they need to be there, sometimes they don’t. In Blood Work, they make sense, and he doesn’t spend too much time on them, so fine, forgiven. They don’t even come close to being a deal killer and frankly, most people probably won’t even notice anything amiss.

Also, there are a few plot elements that may strike a careful reader as too perfect. More than many other crime writers I’ve read, Connelly does a great job making his detectives work hard to find the clues, and makes those discoveries believable. Every now and then, someone will pull a needle out of a haystack that makes you want to be like – really?? – but you just have to move on. Again, most people won’t notice or care.

This is an excellent read through and through. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 starsA good read, but plot holes are ridiculous
Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2019
It's a good yarn with good writing, just don't expect it to be believable. Some examples without spoilers: There was a code that the FBI allegedly couldn't crack that took me about 2 seconds, there was a character who was supposed to be expert at things but made an impossible-to-believe error, there were legions of people who compromised professional ethics to help the protagonist, etc. So you have to suspend disbelief, which I was willing to do until it got to be too much at the end.

I have a few writers I go to when I've read a couple of unsatisfactory books in a row. And he simply never disappoints. This was probably only a 4/4 1/2 star book of his, but I'm so grateful for his dependable talent that it leaped to 5 star! Our protagonist
Terry McCaleb has left the FBI after suffering an on job heart attack, a quickly deteriorating heart function and an heart transplant. He is quietly working on the boat he inherited from his dad, The Following Sea and taking his anti-rejection meds and trying to heal following his life-saving operation .He's contacted after an article in the LA Times.by the woman who has figured from the facts in the artical that he received the organ her sister Gloria had given up after being fatally shot in a convenience store robbery. And he feels the debt and cannot but agree to look into her sister's death. And a great reads follows that set up. With characters you care about, interesting procedural details and a completely satisfactory ending. The plot's not original but it's well done and your attention never flags.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Series Character With Great Style and Purpose

I had the second in this series (A DARKNESS MORE THAN NIGHT) from the library, read the sample of BLOOD WORK (first in the Series) from Kindle, and was enraptured! So I purchased it, and my initial excitement continued. Introducing a brand-new Series character, in a fascinating backdrop, BLOOD WORK focuses on protagonist Terrell (Terry) McCaleb, Catalina Island native, former FBI profiler. Terry suffered a near-fatal cardiac arrest and eventually received a heart transplant. Now spending the rest of his recovered life on a heavy medication regimen, Terry considers he has a second chance, and ponders his purpose. Then he is sought out by the sister of his heart donor, killed in a store robbery. As he eventually agrees to look into the case, he forms a friendship with a Sheriff's Deputy, becomes adversarial to an egotistical homicide Detective, and uncovers a puzzle stretching back to earlier novels by this author. In the process, Terry also uncovers his driving purpose.

Like many crime readers, I am becoming addicted to Michael Connelly novels. I liked his first three Bosch novels. I thought they were very good. Not great, but very good.

And then I read "The Last Coyote" (Harry Bosch), "The Poet" (Jack McEvoy), and now "Blood Work" (Terry McCaleb). To me, these novels have all reached a higher level. Connelly is always a great story-teller. His stories just flow seamlessly, and his plots are very, very clever. But, what really does it for me is his subtle character development. He is understated but so accurate in his depiction of human nature. IT's close to perfect.

In the past year, I have read more than ten Michael Connelly novels -- SPOILER ALERT -- I think I'll read a few more this year too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Work by Connelly?

I have read most of the Bosch books. I had avoided reading this book because Harry Bosch was not the lead character. But after reading all three of the Jack McAvoy books. I have come to the realization that Connelly's best work may be about being a newspaper reporter on the copshop beat. I think the former reporter in him comes through loud and clear. The McAvoy books are about a reporter following a story that begins as one thing and leads to something else altogether. These are not police procedurals like the Bosch books. This book is more about unraveling a mystery and finding the killers before they find you.
Do not make the same mistake I did and avoid these books because Harry Bosch is not the main character. They are very good and reveal much about Connelly the reporter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book by top of the class author of police ...

Excellent book by top of the class author of police stories. As of now I have read all of Mr.Connelly fictional stories that include main characters like Harry Bosch, the most intelligent LA police department problem solver detective; Michael Haller, the astute and risk taker LA lawyer; in the Poet story which is one of the best book I have enjoyed from Mr. Connelly, the main character performed at his highest capacity (I don't recall his name); and now Blood Work, where Terrell McCaleb, took an early retirement from the FBI due heart failure. However, later a woman Graciela Rivers hooks with him with the story of unsolved murder of her sister. This sister's heart had been donated to Terry for his survival. The encounter with this woman leads to a series of investigations and he is on a trail of the murder whose crimes are horrifying. At the end he discovered the killer and kills him, despite the encounters and problems he had with the LA Police Department and the FBI personnel who had classified the crime as random murder. It is a thrilling writing as its best, which reaches the Poet book intrigues level, and I hope the author continues writing new stories with this new character, Terry McCaleb. This book deserves a 5 Stars+.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super mystery, super sleuthing

Blood Work  is an excellent mystery, believable and gripping. There are some unique ideas at the base of the plot that add extra appeal, such as the detective receiving the life-saving donation of the heart of a murder victim. This theme is well developed and adds an extra element of drama. I've enjoyed other books by Mr. Connelly, and this one was of the same high quality-- or perhaps even better.

I enjoy a book more when the sex and profanity are not too explicit or prolific. This one is better than average for the genre. There's a little of both, but at levels I can tolerate without too much annoyance. I'd give Blood Work a 4 out of 5 for moderation in this area.

The Kindle edition was quite well done. There were only a few typos, and the only formatting problem I noticed was the possible omission of blank lines ahead of some scene transitions. I'm fairly price sensitive on Kindle books-- it's hard for me to see how a $15 price tag can be necessary. So, at $10, this one is near the top of my range.

I seldom write a review of a book that has so many reviews on record. However, in this case I want to add my recommendation, even if it only appears as (yet another) tick mark in the 5-star column.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulously plotted until the very end

NO ONE crafts hard-boiled crime novels as masterfully as Michael Connelly. Considering the hundreds of mystery writers out there toiling at this very moment over their word processors, that's quite an extravagant statement--but it's true all the same. He has mastered the art of weaving mysteries that are superbly complex and which keep readers on the edge of their seats. A seemingly unimportant utterance or action early in the novel can later on become magnified into an all-important clue as more is revealed about the crimes and the their perpetrator. Connelly's ability to lead his readers in one direction only to have a sudden revelation change the entire complexion of the story is nothing short of breathtaking at times.
*Blood Work* is a particularly fine mystery in terms of these kinds of "twists and turns." It's also refreshing to see Connelly take a vacation from the Harry Bosch series through his creation of a new protagonist, retired FBI man Terrell McCaleb. Interestingly, McCaleb AND Harry Bosch are featured in a subsequent Connelly novel, *A Darkness More Than Night*.
Is the book perfect? It's close, but no. The ending is somewhat Hollywood theatrical, almost as though Connelly grew tired of brainstorming further subtleties and unexpected revelations. Also, although Connelly is very attentive to empirical details in his descriptions of places and institutions, he slips up in chapter ten when he describes a character's employment as an engineer in charge of inspecting an aqueduct with a "Lone Pine segment." He writes, "He was an engineer with a private firm contracted by the state..." The Los Angeles Aqueduct is, of course, operated and maintained by the City of Los Angeles' Department of Water and Power. This is a trivial error, of course, but those who know California water resources cannot help but raise their eyebrows upon reading this passage.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inexplicable murder, an attraction for a young mother, and a skillful investigator make for a highly entertaining story.

The main character is a medically-retired expert crime investigator who is recovering from a successful recent heart transplant. He is visited by a mother and her young son, and the mother wants him to investigate the apparently senseless murder of her sister. He is attracted to her and her son and reluctantly agrees to look into the murder for her, although he suspects there is nothing he can do. He uses his familiarity with the police to secure the official records of the crime. The records show a proper investigation, but there is an easily overlooked flaw that just doesn't add up. He goes on to investigate the murder despite resistance from the police who don't want to be shown up by a retired has-been. The story is very interesting, the sleuthing top-notch, and is extremely dangerous for a man with a new heart. The unusual plot, interaction of the characters and the plausibility of the story easily qualify it for a top rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Did I Miss This 1998 connelly Book?

Wow, another super murder mystery by Michael Connelly. I don't know how he can consistantly write such intriguing, interesting and at the same time complex manuscripts as he did with Blood Work. All I can say is that he must have spent a lot of time doing the research. The story line is obviously original and the characters are developed well. Terry McCaleb, (ex FBI) who is recovering from major surgery puts his entire heart and investigative skills into solving the case. The path he takes is a lonely one as he is up against both local and federal agents who want the credit of sloving the murder. The one exception is Detective Winston of the LA Sheriff's Office who is a believer in McCaleb and waits to see if his thoughts are on target. If you missed this book... get it...as you won't be disappointed.

Can this man write ANY book or main character that I don’t like?! I don’t think so. I read this 2 months after my transplant and found myself compelled by the story, McCaleb, and the attention to transplant-related details. Anytime you read on of McCaleb’s books, you’re in for a great ride. This was no exception.
