How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

5.0 out of 5 starsGood as I remember but a lot more annoying as an adult
Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2019
Read these books a few years ago when I was a teenager and loved them. Rereading them now because I remember how much I liked them and just felt like reading them again. Although I still like the plot and most of the characters and the storyline; this time I have a more than slight twinge of annoyance when I read the dialogue and the over explanation thought process the characters go through. The dialogue is cheesy, super corny and too simplified. It’s like okay i get it I’m not an idiot. And anything that has to do with sex is seen as a nasty or slutty thing to do which is only shaming any teens reading this. The writer acts as if the reader isn’t mature enough or smart enough to follow her storyline. So that’s annoying.

3.0 out of 5 starsStop the retelling
Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2021
I have loved the House of Night series. I’m sure that obvious since I keep moving on to the next book. What I struggle with though is the retelling at the beginning of the book. These books aren’t stand alones so I’m not sure why I waist the first couple chapters on having to catch up on something I’ve already read. It makes for a super slow start that struggles to keep my interest.

However, after that, love it!!

1.0 out of 5 stars False description!!!

I bought a “brand new” book. What I got was a stained up yellow paged clearly used copy with dirty pages and what looks like mold or something growing on it! Very dissatisfied with purchase. Idk if it’s even worth the hassle of returning but if I wanted a stained up crappy version of the book I would have went ahead & just spent the 99 cents to buy the used copy but I wanted it for my collection so I bought it “new”. Was clearly lied to!

While not as bad as the first book, this one still features terrible writing, slut shaming, and more. Like a horrible peek back into the 2010 vampire craze.

1.0 out of 5 stars ITS NOT THE REAL BOOK! KNOCK OFF!

Knock off!!!! NOT THE REAL BOOK!!!! All the pages are sequential however in chapter 25 the story cuts off and starts in the wrong place and cuts off again. As if a single page is completely wrong and out of place. I compared it to another copy I found elseware and discovered that the whole book appears to be a photocopy of the real thing. The cover is missing proper color and pattern and the numbers on each page are faded. I will not be purchasing from this seller again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Undertones of racism in a book about acceptance

How can a book that is supposed to be about acceptance have undertones of racism? If I read one more stereotype about black people I will scream. In the book, the author writes they Aphrodite bows up to Stevie Rae like she was black. Come on!

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Happens, Continues a Bad Series
Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2009
I am embarrassed to admit this, but I own and have read all the House of Night books. This iteration of the series follows the same formula as previous books, made only worse because now we're on book 4 and nothing has really happened.

I accidentally missed ordering this book when I was buying the series and sadly, I really didn't notice or realize that an entire book of the saga was missing. The wikipedia entry on Untamed is just as good as the book itself.

I will say this, the Casts have definitely hit upon an interesting and imaginative take on the appropriately eternally interesting subject of vampires.

The issue is that these books try much too hard to be current and "hip" and I just have to cringe at the authors' need to cram every bit of pop-culture, fashion, and teenage attitude into these books. Think a badly-written Harry Potter (without the solid character development and original and inventive universe of magic) meets badly-written Twilight (without the passably interest vampire and werewolf lore of that series).

Is it strange that the strongest portions of this series are the elements that seem like they were lifted directly from a romance novel? I could do without the protagonist, who comes off as prissy, annoyingly self-righteous, and a total goody two-shoes.

For what it's worth, there are interesting ideas lurking somewhere in the series. I like the idea of a vampire boarding school, I like the idea of gifts and affinities from the goddess, and I certainly dig the feminist mother goddess vibe (Marion Zimmerman Bradley capitalizes magnificently on this). But it never goes anywhere, it really doesn't.

Maybe I'm being too hard on something that is meant to be light fun fiction for teens, but I guess I just wanted this book to be more and feel like every new one that I read just further thwarts my desire for this to turn into a cool vampire novel.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't get me started
Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2009
I BOUGHT this book because I felt I HAD to give the House of Night another chance. First off, Amazon's Kindle prices are ridiculous! And yet, I still buy. There is something wonderful about being able to read in absolute comfort....no balancing the book, getting the right light, etc. And there is the fact you know you are getting ripped off by paying $7-$14 for an ebook!!
I digress....The House of Night series has left me angry over the $$ I've wasted. Untamed was so poorly written, that I actually had to skip the dialogue, the inane, cutesy, utterly moronic dialogue and force my way through the story. Things could have been so different if the efforts of the authors would have been focused on literary skills and not blowing through the process to produce another book.Half of the book is the re-telling of what we've already read in the last three books.
There is one book left in the series, but I can not lift my finger to press '1 click buy'........Don't Get Started!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Promising Idea, But Falls Short
Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2011
I once loved House of Night. My first experience with the series was my aunt telling me about it over the phone and reading me the first chapter of the first book. I enjoyed it a lot. The second book was okay. The third was alright. But by the time Untamed came around, I was so tired of the stupidity of Zoey and her friends that I just really wanted the whole lot of them to reject the change and die already! I found Zoey completely unsympathetic and at times very Mary Sue-ish (actually, most -- if not /all/ -- of the time). She cheated on her many boyfriends with each other and doesn't really seem to care. Her friends get mad at her but them immediately forgive her like the whole reason they were angry was no big deal. Erik is being completely ridiculous for being mad at her and not forgiving her. All of it is just very annoying. And then there's all the pop-culture references. Can we /not/ mention Gossip Girl and Sarah Jessica Parker for just a paragraph? Please? I'm reading a fictional vampire book, not a guide to modern pop culture. The grammar is atrocious. The story is muddled and doesn't always make sense. I really liked the idea of a vampire boarding school, but the execution wasn't good. It falls short for me. That's my opinion, take it or leave it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good book ruined by a bad narrator.
Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2018
They should have stayed with Bolinda Audio and Edwina Wren. Her performance for the previous books was wonderfully prefect. But Jenna Lamia with Macmillan Audio doesn't know what she's doing. I can't even tell what's dialog and what's not, especially when it's Zoey maybe talking. There's no change in her voice to give the listener any clue as to rather Zoey is talking or thinking.
