4.0 out of 5 starsA Guilty Pleasure, Snow Day Kind of Film
Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2021
It's undeniable that I would be happy watching Chris Elliott read the phone book. I've long been a fan of the under-appreciated Elliott and while his work here sure didn't make him a household name it was a nice use of his comedic talent.

This is your fairly run-of-the-mill family film made better by a quality cast including the aforementioned Elliott as a rather demented snow plow driver and the lovely Jean Smart as a distracted mother. In case it's not obvious, "Snow Day" is centered around a snow day. A school in upstate New York has an unexpected snow day and the kids band together to do whatever it takes, including hijacking the small community's snow plow, to keep the school closed.

Yes, there are too many story threads and some of them don't get near enough attention. Yes, the special effects are antiquated in the film from year 2000. Yes, you pretty much know exactly where it's going to go and it goes there.

It's just a fun, weird, goofy little film with a cast that seems to realize it's a fun, weird, goofy little film. While Chris Elliott pretty much steals the film, a relatively low-key Chevy Chase is here as a weatherman reduced to gimmicks to try to get ratings until he ends up being the only local forecaster who correctly calls this storm.

Emmanuelle Chriqui is here as a teenage love interest for the young nerdish Hal (Mark Webber) while, of course, there's a more reasonable love interest on the side waiting for things to happen.

There are basically four plots going on at all times, though it's when the kids are on the screen that the film picks up pace. This film was a box-office success making $62 million off a $13 million budget. It's become somewhat of a cult classic, or at least as much of a cult classic as a family film can be. Elliott seems to be one of those actors everyone loves, but he's just never really become the household name he's deserved to be.

I re-watched the film recently during a big winter storm here in my hometown and I laughed as much as I always do. Occasionally sweet and frequently silly, "Snow Day" is a fun little film for the kids that the whole family can enjoy.

Ok, so maybe I'm too old for this film- though it was made when I was younger. That being said, this movie bombed in my mind. Again, this is probably because I'm older now and what is interesting and funny to kids just doesn't thrill me anymore.

First off, I'll hit the high points of the film. The main characters love interest and the girl chasing him are the strongest characters within the entire film. I felt as though they were fleshed out far better than anyone else and that the movie actually told their struggles better and more succinctly than anyone else's. While this is great from a characters perspective- it sucks when you don't really see any growth in the main characters. You could argue that the protagonist does grow, but his growth is marred by his being rather flat throughout the majority of the film.

The biggest issue for me was the Snow Plow Man. How... In... The... Heck... Did... He... Not... Get.. ARRESTED! Seriously- where are the parents within this entire film? There are HUNDREDS of kids being terrorized by him- some nearly buried alive in a snow cave by his reckless behavior and not a single parent comes out to do anything?

And the crux of the film as a whole fails on many levels- the snow day is already a weak place to begin, and the idea of doing something with your time that is meaningful is the only thread within the entire film that works. But this is marred and belittled by their quest to get another day off from school, and their battle with the snow plow driver who should be in jail awaiting kidnapping and attempted murder charges.

On the whole, I'm not sure what we're supposed to get out of this film. It's not that funny, the lessons are kinda lame, and the main characters (outside of love interest numbers one and two) are boring. If you like Nickalodean movies, you may like this, but if you want something with some decent lessons and comedy that actually gets you to laugh, look somewhere else. The Princess Bride comes to mind...

Kind of boring. My 7 year old DD liked it though. I thought it was quite a snoozer though, really.

I bought this because I was looking for a good holiday family movie. It just isn't very good, my kids were disappointed and so was I. Wish I had spent the money on a book or board game instead.

I own this movie on a VHS, and was excited that I finally found it on DVD. When I got it in the mail I tried it in my DVD player and the disc would not play, and I had to return it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Example of Amazon's Ratings Inflation
Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2020
At best this is an average movie, which should get it 3-stars. Instead somehow it averages 4.5 stars. It is, of course, about the events of an unexpected "Snow Day," where kids get out of school and supposedly, according to the writers, magical things happen. I like Chevy Chase, but here he plays a straight and secondary role, preoccupied with being the #3-rated meteorologist in a 3-man market. Another reviewer described in detail all the illegal and dangerous activities the kids in this movie engage in, and presumably which we are supposed to laugh at. The most egregious is probably hitting the snow-plow driver with a snowball, causing him to crash his truck into a parked car. They also repeatedly pelt the school principal with snowballs. We see snow-plow truck driver strap a kid to the front of his plow. Hilarious, right? The annoying over-weight kid passes a lot of flatulence in the movie, and that is always good for a laugh. Aside from the weather, the main story is about a nice bright teen-age boy infatuated with the most popular girl in school who has just broken up with her jerk of a boyfriend. As is typical in these stories, however, in the end the nice boy finds out that his platonic female friend and confidant is actually in love with him and he finally realizes she is really the girl for him.

Robert Graves
2.0 out of 5 stars Insulting
Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2000
Is this what we've come to accept as a good picture? Have we swallowed Hollywood's drivel so faithfully that they can pawn this off on us as a decent effort? As my caption suggests, I was literally insulted by the "plots" on this film.
The premise is great. I lived for snow days when I was young. And it was the premise that got me out to see it. Well, that and Chevy Chase. But Chase hasn't done a watchable film since "Christmas Vacation". I keep hoping he'll break whatever slump he's in, and this movie WAS better than his other recent efforts.
But the weakness of "Snowday" is not in the acting. I mean, the acting is not stellar by any standard, but you don't really expect it to be in this kind of film. You just want to be entertained. However, in order to entertain, a film - ANY film, including low-ball comedies like this - must have 1) a discernible protagonist, 2) a shred of believability, and 3) likeable characters. "Snowday" is lacking in the above categories.
The "protagonist" is an adolescent boy who only wants to date the most popular girl in school. In doing so he shuns his adorable little sister and his best friends. He pursues the popular girl, and against the odds, she falls for him and even makes the move to kiss him.
Sound good? Here are a few problems. First, this popular girl is an absolute sweetheart. She's been mistreated and ignored by a jerk boyfriend for too long. You feel bad for her. You really like her. As a result, you WANT them to end up together. But of course, they don't. After the kiss, in a moment of clarity, our hero realizes that he is in love with his quite unattractive, redheaded lifelong pal. The writers made the fatal flaw in this plot line of making us LIKE the popular girl. She had no flaws and you feel bad for her, so as a result you're actually MAD at the hero when he rejects her.
Also, there are many storylines that just aren't woven together well. We're not sure who the main character is supposed to be (it doesn't seem to be the narrator - the adolescent older brother - since his story is in the background). The problem is that they did not focus enough on the "fun" aspect of this film, the snow day itself. They spent too much time on this kid trying to get this popular girl (whom he then rejects) and that had NOTHING to do with a snow day, other than the mantra he kept repeating, "Anything can happen on a snow day..." It could have been any day of the week.
I suppose kids will like it, but even kids should have the basic elements of a good story presented to them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Far from great
Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2001
This movie isn't exactly what I would call great. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, just below average.
Firstly, you can't tell who the main character is because the plots are all put together so badly you can hardly tell which is the main plot. And not many of the characters are likeable either. For example, the "snowplow man" is a complete jerk, and you have to dislike Hal (the older brother) in some way because he left his younger sister alone just so he could find the most popular girl in school. (whom he later rejects.)
Secondly, I really think that if this was supposed to be a kids movie, they could have cut out the cuss words in the movie...this is a kids movie, not an adult movie! Parents may have questioned taking their children to it.
Thirdly, the content of the movie itself was not done well. All the jokes the actors made were corny and old, some of the characters were played horribly, and the plots were boring and did not offer us engaging characters to really follow throughout the movie.
Overall? I think this movie could have been much better. I didn't enjoy it much, and depending on your tastes, you may or may not like this movie. Thank you for reading my review. I hope it helps.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun, but strictly for kids
Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2001
Snow day is an OK movie. But adults may find it a bit boring. It is by the way a nickelodeon movie, so it aims at younger viewers. Despite it is only 89 mins, 84 mins for the features and 5 minutes for the credit, the movie feels a bit long. Not enough Chevy Chase, so the funny moments are limited as well. The younger actors' give excellent performances. The DVD's picture quality is OK and the 5.1 Dolby Digital has very limited activities. It worths to be watched once not to keep. Just rent this one.
