Review: Wicked Ties by Shayla Black. 2.5 Stars 03/25/2019

This book was greatly repetitive and not my type of book. Shayla Black is a get writer but the issue of sex on every page you turn, no story, and just erotic sex just wore me out. There was a mention of a stalker and a revenge plan but where is the story. It’s not an intellectual story and other readers loved the book. Learning how to be submissive doesn’t take much when it comes to sex so what is the big deal about….

Jack Cole is security guard, which makes him automatically a good looking sexy strong sex partner and Morgan O’Malley has a sex talk show so right off their made for each other. I know Shayla has many fans and I don’t want to offend anyone but I’m not one of those fans. I’ll be honest and say I hope I never come across another book of hers and if I do I have a very special place for it…

Tpagirl Loves Romance
4.0 out of 5 stars Sexy BDSM novel!

Wicked Ties is the first book I've read by Shayla Black and the first book of the Wicked Lovers series.

The storyline is primarily about a submissive learning she is a submissive and that this sexual style is not abnormal. However, Black also included a suspenseful plot to include a stalker and a revenge plan.

It's written from a dual POV: Jack Cole and Morgan O'Malley. Jack is incredibly sexy and alpha. He's a security guard and is every romantic lovers dream. Morgan is beautiful and strong. She is a sex talk show host who is interviewing Jack for the BDSM lifestyle in preparation for one of her shows. During her first interview with Jack, she runs into trouble and his security guard instincts kick in.

Jack is a dominate and very open with his sexual preferences; thus perfect for her interview. Morgan had been criticized by a past fiancé for her fantasies as being depraved; therefore, she's suppressed them and vows to never share them again. Black incorporated this into the main theme of the storyline. I liked the premise of the storyline; however, it went a little slow for me at times and seemed a little repetitive.

Morgan and Jack are both likable characters, but each had their own issues that were bothersome and at times I totally didn't get them. At other times I loved them.

It's not a tremendously intellectually challenging book but it is an enjoyable and entertaining read. The supporting cast of characters was strong and set the stage for future books in the series. I look forward to reading not only more from this series but other works from Black as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Such a great story! Exciting to read and super hot!

Everything about this was awesome! Great story, super hot (I mean HOT!), well written characters, and a nice bit of intrigue. Loved it!

I was pulled right in from the beginning. It had a nice mysterious element and I liked the details being laid out. Jack and Morgan were great characters. Loved their chemistry. I liked their interactions and how they're details were learned. There was really good development. Jack and Morgan were beyond hot together. There was so much passion between them and they had extremely well written and detailed erotic scenes (with a nice bit of kink too!). The author is very descriptive and thorough.

There are ups and downs as feelings are fought, I loved the growth and acceptance they go through as there relationship works itself out. There are really nice secondary characters as well, Jack’s grandfather was adorable and Deke was way sexy! I'm hoping he has his own story at some point. This is the first book in a series and there are a ton of others out already so I am looking forward to reading more.

There was a really great build to the story and Jack and Morgan’s relationship, it was exciting to read. I liked the details and descriptions really pulling me into their erotic world. I mentioned this was hot right? Combustible might be a better description. It was such a great story but some parts were drawn out. Lots of narrative happening. It's dual POV which was awesome, I loved getting inside Jack’s head. Morgan could be frustrating since she was hanging onto who she thought she should be instead of accepting who she was but I loved watching that fight within herself and then finally getting her a-ha moment of understanding.

If you’re looking for something extremely hot with a nice bit of kink with the added bonus of intrigue, I'd definitely recommend this.

How explicit 5 / 5
Amount of BDSM/Fetish 4.5 / 5
Story 4.5 / 5
Overall: 4.5 / 5 (Rounded to 5/5)

If you are looking for a really hot, sexy book with BDSM aspects, then this is THE book for you. Wicked Ties was the first book that I read after 50 Shades, and it’s blazing hot! The story is full of suspense, drama, and so much sexiness that you will definitely need a spare pair of panties!!

Morgan is a hostess for a cable talk show which deals with all sexual matters. She is researching a topic for an upcoming show about domination and submission. She is told that the number one person to talk to is Master J (Jack). Jack works as a bodyguard and is a Dom in the bedroom. During the interview, he protects Morgan when a stalker tries to kill her. Sensing she is really a submissive, he decides to protect her from the stalker as well as teach her what the D/s lifestyle is all about.

Morgan is running from a persistent stalker, seeking shelter with her half brother Brandon didn't work, he found her. Morgan finds herself in Louisiana interviewing a Dom for her next segment for her show, Turn Me On, what she doesn't expect is her reaction to the 6 foot Adonis in front of her. Dark close cut hair, Brown commanding eyes and a body that should be illegal! When gunshots ring out she finds herself on the ground under Master J!
Jack Cole has revenge on his mind and all is going according to plan, meeting Morgan is just the first step. Finding out her life is in danger throws a wrench in his plans, now protecting the red headed beauty takes precedence. The more time Jack spends with Morgan the harder it is to separate his growing feelings for her and the need to get revenge.

omg, Morgan is totally ridiculous woman child. Throughout the entire book, it was a constant being in her head with her thoughts of "i shouldn't be thinking this", " omg he is so amazing", " don't touch me", " touch me", "i can't believe i have these sexual desires" over and over and over and over. The sex scenes weren't anything special. I forced myself through to the end which is totally anti climatic.

I was excited to read this book after all the good reviews, but it just did not do it for me. I found it really hard to make it through the book and I couldn't care about either Jack or Morgan or their relationship. They both felt so two-dimensional, and Morgan was truly annoying. She spent most of the book insisting that she could not possibly be submissive and making half-hearted protests to Jack while he kept doing whatever he felt like doing. Her constant worrying about her ex-fiancee and her mother thinking she was depraved got old really fast, and I agree with the other reviewer who said it's unbelievable that a woman this naive about sex could be hosting a TV show about it. I found her irritating and couldn't see what Jack saw in her. The sex scenes were okay...some steamy bits, but nothing especially toe-curling for me. While I understand the excitement that can come in a book in which a woman discovers her true erotic nature for the first time, the problem for me with BDSM romances that start out with such a naive heroine is that they really never get past some light bondage and spanking because the girl is such newbie. However, I know this is what a lot of readers are looking for, so if that's your cup of tea, you will probably enjoy the sexual aspects of this book quite a bit. But even with that caveat, I still think the story drags throughout, and the wrap up of the stalker storyline ends up feeling pretty preposterous to me. I wouldn't recommend this book, but clearly there are a lot of people who like it, so if you enjoy this type of light BDSM romance, this might work for you. But if you are looking for either a little more perversity or a really engaging plot, I'd look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wicked Ties Probably Won't Disappoint Readers Who Want Scorching Sex Scenes
Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2007
Verified Purchase
If all you want in a BDSM romance is scorching sex scenes, Wicked Ties probably won't disappoint you.

The chemistry between Morgan O'Malley the host of a sex talk show and self-proclaimed dominant bodyguard Jack Cole was immediate and powerful.

When Morgan's stalker found her and took a shot at her during Morgan's interview with Jack, Jack declared himself her bodyguard and whisked her away to a remote cabin which only intensified the sizzle between them.

Though the attraction between Morgan and Jack was strong, and it was clear that Morgan was attracted by Jack's dominance I found his behavior early in the book to be reprehensible.

First of all, being curious about BDSM or D/s or being attracted to someone who is a dom is not the same as giving consent for a BDSM or D/s relationship to ensue. From the moment Morgan and Jack meet for their interview Jack focused on turning what should have been a general discussion about BDSM relationships into a personal attempt to get Morgan to submit to him.

That worked okay in the opening, but once he took her to his cabin to protect her from the stalker his focus on getting her to submit sexually intensified to the point that he was like a relentless bulldozer, continually pushing and demanding and not taking any time to get to know her on anything other than a sexual level.

He seemed to think from the outset that he knew Morgan's needs better than she knew them herself, all on the space of a couple of days acquaintance. In the early part of the book he wasn't patient, he didn't encourage her to open up to him emotionally, he just pushed and pushed and pushed for her to submit sexually. When she said no he didn't take no for an answer (again thinking he knows what she needs better than she does).

Spoiler alert:

As if his constantly pushing for her submission wasn't enough, Jack at one point tells Morgan that BDSM is built on trust. He does this in the same general timeframe as he is encouraging her to trust him, so that he can tape their first sexual encounter so that he can send it to her fiancé, against whom he has a grudge. This is reprehensible behavior for any hero, let alone the hero in a BDSM book, where relationship needs to be based on trust.

If BDSM is built on trust then it requires a partner who is trustworthy. I didn't find Jack trustworthy, particularly in the first portion of the book. He earned a little of my respect later in the book when he had to overcome his own misgivings to give Morgan a sexual experience that was important to her. He earned a bit more when the past came crashing down and he had to own up to sending the tape.

Though the sex scenes are very hot and are very well written I would recommend this book cautiously. Some readers are likely to be put off by Jack's behavior early in the book (as I was). For some his later behavior will make up for it. For others the bad taste left early on will not be overcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Never Forget Your First - One of My Very Favorite Books
Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2011

This was my very first erotica and it started me on my path of debauched reading. LOL. In all seriousness, I absolutely love this book.

Doing research for her tv show, Morgan interviews Jack, aka Master J, a well known Dom, to gain information on the D/s lifestyle. The problem? Someone is stalking Morgan and has her running scared. After the perp breaks into her apartment and trashes her home, she flees California. The other problem? Jack's only reason for agreeing to Morgan's interview is as a set up. He plans to use her to get back at her fiance, Jack's former best friend who stole and seduced Jack's wife. Jack plans to seduce Morgan, make a tape of it and send it to Morgan's fiance as the ultimate revenge. Problem #3? Morgan doesn't actually have a fiance. As part of the cover she's using while she's being stalked she has her half-brother pose as her fiance while she's in danger and has to move in with him.

During their first meeting at a public restaurant, someone starts shooting at Morgan and it's only Jack's expertise that gets her out of the restaurant alive. Jack's real job is bodyguard/security expert and owns his own security firm. After Morgan's brush with death at the hands of an unknown assassin, Jack takes Morgan to a cabin in the middle of the Louisiana swamp for safe keeping while his partner, Deke, tries to track down who's after Morgan.

While holed up in the cabin, Jack finds out that Morgan is really a sub who has been hiding her true nature after both her ex and her mother had called her depraved (and a lot of other things). So ashamed of her thoughts that she refuses to acknowledge to Jack that she really is submissive and Jack tries to prove to her that she is. They enter into a highly erotic D/s relationship which Jack explains cannot truly work until she trusts him completely.

The irony is that by the time Jack realizes that he's fallen in love with Morgan, he'd already emailed a video of his and Morgan's first sexual encounter to her 'fiance' and is so afraid of losing her that he doesn't come clean about what he did, especially since she's finally given him her trust, submitted herself to him fully, and admits that she's in love with him as well. As you can guess, nothing good comes out of the situation once Morgan finds out the extent to which he used and betrayed her. It's the only thing I didn't like about the book. That Jack demanded Morgan's trust, even knowing that he'd already betrayed it. But if he hadn't, we wouldn't have had the climax (since the killer comes for her just as Jack's betrayal is revealed) and we wouldn't have had such a heartpounding denouement.

Touching, heartfelt, and erotic as hell, this book had me spellbound from the very first chapter and never let go. Loved every minute, chapter and page of this book. The characters were believable, likeable, seductive. And I look forward to seeing Jack and Morgan pop up in the other Wicked Lovers books in the series that came after this one. Amazing writing.
