How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

5.0 out of 5 starsMy Brother (the Expert) Approved this Cutting Mat
Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2017
I'm going to have to give this all the stars because my brother asked for this SPECIFIC cutting mat for his birthday and my brother does NOTHING average. He's that guy. That guy that decides to be interested in something and then becomes an *actual* expert at it and only does things if he can do them excellently. I'm not that cool. But, he is. If he's into something, he goes 100% and does TONS of research before knowing exactly what he needs. This was exactly what he needed for whatever magic he does. He must cut things on it. I don't know. He must cut many, magical things. But the bottom line is: if my brother approves it, then it's the best one out there. I don't even know if it's a great deal or not. But I can tell you that if you want the best one, this is most likely it. You will not be disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 starsI hate this mat with ever fiber of my being.
Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2020
This mat is horrible. I waited over six months to review it because I wanted to see if it would ever actually lay flat. Nope, it doesn't. What is the point of a cutting mat with guide lines and measurements on it, if it doesn't lay flat? I though perhaps it was because of shipping and it would flatten out with some time. Guess not. I placed books on it and left it to flatten out for almost 2 months. Remove the books and it still won't lay flat. It's too bad because it would be a great mat. It is quite durable. So durable in fact that 25lbs of books can't flatten it out. Find another mat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, heavy cutting mat, accurate bright white grid
Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2017
Color: BlackSize: 24" x 36"Verified Purchase
I use this mostly for general dent protection on my desk; but I do cut materials on it. I have an Alvin  Alvin GBM2436 GBM Series 24 inches x 36 inches Green/Black Professional Self-Healing Cutting Mat  for comparison. Both are essentially identical in terms of build material and performance; they seem to react to cuts the same way. Grids on both are accurate. You can't go wrong with either one.

Shipped curled in half (arrgggh), but it flattened out fine in 20 minutes w/ some weight on it.

For the self-healing: don't expect miracles; they aren't magic. They will start to show heavy cuts over time. Use sharp blades, not brute force. Blades are cheap and it's not worth fighting a dull blade.

Head to head with the Alvin (top of pic is the Dahle, bottom is the Alvin)
The Dahle Vantage markings are bright white, quite a bit easier to see than the Alvin.
The Dahle does not have markings on the opposite side; it's just a solid color. The Alvin has the same grid on both sides.
The Dahle is 0.125" thick; the Alvin is thinner at 0.104" (what can i say? I had a set of calipers at my desk)
The Dahle's centimeter markings are nice, but limited usefulness. Wish they printed both Inch and CM numbers the entire perimeter

4.0 out of 5 stars It’s translucent, not transparent, not opaque
Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2020

Straight out of the box, this mat smelled like a skunk; but we aired it out on the deck for three days, and it’s better now. I have one of the blue mats, and that one didn’t stink when new; but I specifically wanted a clear one for tracing and using with my light box, which is built in flush with my countertop. Those who are calling this opaque are mistaken about the definition. It is TRANSLUCENT, not opaque. The blue ones and black ones are opaque, meaning they are solid-colored and no light gets through. However, calling this “crystal clear” is inaccurate. It’s just translucent, as in milky clear. It’s what I wanted and I’m happy with it, other than not being able to use it until it aired out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well... I didnt break it.

I dont work with fabric. So cant attest to that.

It survived attacks from my #11 craft blades mostly. The one where I slipped out of my material and hit it hard left a mark. Otherwise the only way I hurt this was using a compass on it. It's rather hard so I had to stab it pretty hard. This left a tiny hole. Any other mark from the knife sealed well with some rubbing.

Do not trust the ruler. I checked it against a different ruler for a couple of inches. Somewhere it changes.

But for what I do, I need to protect my table and this works well for that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a top end mat, but great for the price

In comparison to the OLFA I've had previously - The self-healing functionality is less than expected, but it does well regardless. The mat itself feels a little bit lower quality. HOWEVER - It's a mat. I would happily buy this again instead of spending triple for what I'd consider a nicer one considering there is little-to-none functionality difference between them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Mat but Careless Shipping
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2021
Color: ClearSize: 24" x 36"Verified Purchase
This mat is perfect for my work (cutting stencils ) and many other cutting tasks.

It is translucent, which is fine with me. So far durability (except for permanent shipping damage) is satisfactory.

Biggest problem? Damage due to the sloppy, lazy shipping department at Dahle. The item was simply pulled off the shelf and rolled up with a shipping label slapped on. I hoped damage (see photos) would "heal" itself, but no luck. The divit is permanent, which costs me nearly a square foot of useable space.

Typically, I would not write a vendor review in the product review section, but there was no available option to review the vendor separately.

However, since the manufacturer (Dahle) is also the seller and shipper of this item, their policies ultimately have an impact (no pun intended) on the product.

I would not purchase from Dahle again, and I think their cheap, unprofessional method of shipping reflects their attitude both toward their products and their customers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for me; but maybe not for you.

I don't use these for the specific purpose of cutting things all the time. It's multifunctional for my Gunpla hobby. I go through these seasonally it seems mostly due to Laquer thinner spills that will eat this right up. There are occasions where I do cut plastic parts using my hobby knife and I must say there are certainly much better quality mats out there for that. I bought an expensive tamiya mat when I started making models. It was true to it's description however after buying 3 of them at $40 because of the occasional laquer thinner spill this mat is for me personally. I set it on my desk whenever I do a build and it also doubles as a nice mouse pad so I can youtube boxing matches while I build. This is the reason why I don't just use a sheet of glass instead because a laser mouse won't work on that type of surface. If I were buying this for the specific purpose of cutting crafts and I did that as much as I do making a models; I would not recommend this for you. It doesn't self heal and it's really a night and day difference when compared to a more expensive higher quality mat that does self heal like my old tamiya mat. My pictures show the 3 actual layers with a thin blue front and back sheet and pic of my hobby desk setup. Like I said this is idea for me since I go through these regardless of the quality every season.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works For the Price
Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2019

I do a lot of crafts as a side business and needed a mat for my desk. In store purchases for similar product was a little more expensive and although I know you get what you pay for with these mats this one is pretty decent for the price. I love the clear mats because my desk is a piece of art in itself and it allows the colors to show through instead of having a gray or green mat on top of my beautifully redone desk. Ruler is accurate on the mat. Self healing is a 3 to 4 in my book. It works pretty good when I was using an exacto knife to trim my epoxy keychains but when I used it with my rotary cutter to cut mesh for wreaths it didn't "heal" and left scratches and grooves. The print in that area however is still very visible. Cleaning wise be sure you do not use any alcohol as it will remove the print. Would be nice if there was one that was clear with the printing on the bottom side so the cutting is done on the top and it could be cleaned. I use inks and paints so sometimes alcohol is the best choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Serves its purpose

I received this mat on a hot day and it was creased in several areas and wouldn’t lay flat. I took it outside, put it in the sun, and let it sit until it was hot. After taking it back inside I put heavy books and boxes on it to flatten it out and let them sit overnight. It still wasn’t completely flat the next day but was much improved. I’m using it more like a desktop mat to protect my desk so it’s fine for my purpose. I figure for the price I paid it met my expectations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Note that is not self healing

Overall is a great product, the material is excellent and to a certain extend it will provide a suitable base for small cuts. The size is pretty accurate and the measurements are pretty accurate to. I like the color it enhances my bench lighting it has the correct weight to be stable while working. Stains are easily removed, just make sure you clean it asap. The solder sticks to the material but comes off fairly easy without noticeable stain. I would recommend this product. This is not a paid review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some sellers might bend it in half for shipment.
Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2018
Color: BlueSize: 18" x 24"Verified Purchase
I bought this for use in my workshop and it seems to be well made so far. It was shipped to me folded in half, so I had to "unbend" it over the course of a couple days, but now it lays very flat on my bench. The white printing on the blue surface may have been a poor choice on my part, but it's fine. If the blue were darker, it would be easier to read the printing on the surface. I've seen these in green with yellow printing and that might be easier to read, depending on your lighting. The 18" x 24" size is perfect for my needs (30" deep x 8' wide workbench). It is big enough to cut large items, but small enough to not be in the way while I work.
