Fun novel, poor quality control of the text
Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2018
This is a pretty classic 90's book with "I'm not like the other girls" feminism. However, it's one of Lackey's least angsty and rapey novels from the early Valdemar books, so if you're looking for some swashbuckling with a woman protagonist, it's a lot of fun. I also like that most of it is set outside Valdemar so you get a lot of outsider perspective on Valdemar.
That said, this ebook is obviously an OCR scan of printed text rather than working with any old computer files. The italics used for thought and telepathy are all over the place and inconsistent. There are some weird word substitutions ("meres" for "mercs", for example, although no "anus" for "arms" which is my all-time favorite) and stuff that was very clearly not run through spellcheck. It's really disappointing that a backlist book is on the market in 2018 with this sort of shoddy quality control.
