5.0 out of 5 stars"If you seek peace, prepare for war."

I've read all of Tom Clancy's books and had recently finished another author's first book in the thriller genre (The Lions of Lucerne) and had come away disappointed by the cliches and shallow plot, so I approached this book with muted expectations. However, there are many, many things to like about this book.

There are the characters. Joe Ledger is the main character and rather than being a super soldier, he comes along as a different flavor. Yes, he's "Warrior" but he's also a "Cop" so he doesn't have the freedom to act that some Special Ops characters tend to have. He's a "hero waiting to happen".

There is the team that he needs to lead: First Sergeant Bradley Sims, Second Lieutenant Oliver Brown, CPO Samuel Tyler, and Bunny Rabbit. Joe starts by offending all of them and then needs to shape them into a team who trust each other and work together.

His friend and "shrink" is Rudy Sanchez who gets swept up into the story and has his own role to play.

There's even a love interest in Major Grace Courtland however the author develops this slowly and let's Joe demonstrate his character and that he's a gentleman.

There are the "bad guys". Rather than picking a terrorist stereotype, the author comes up with a new concept: a corporate super-villain who uses terrorists who, in turn, use him. In addition, there are the moles planted by the villain in our government organizations.

The Bio-technology is plausible and well explained in the book.

"If you seek peace, prepare for war." ("Si vis pacem, para bellum")

The plot and the pace grew throughout the book and ended on a high note.

I'm looking forward to reading this author's next book.

I only found 1 typo in the Kindle edition of the book which I've reported to Amazon.

1.0 out of 5 starsRefund please

This was a total waste of time and money. If it's possible, I would like a refund. I really wanted to like it but I couldn't even force myself to keep reading past the first 100 pages or so. If that far. Everything about the main character annoyed me and it tainted the rest of the story. The way his "martial arts prowess" is portrayed and the unconvincing attempt to make him a smartass were the main problems. The dialogue was eye rolling most of the time. The obvious intention was for Ledger to come off as a smart*** but it fell short. Half of what he said sounded like an attempt to prove just how clever and snarky he was . This got along really quick. The tone felt like more monthy teenager you wanted to smack upside the head than smart***. It got especially bad when he interacted with his "team" in training and on their first mission. It sounded like corny, cliched B movie fodder.
Admittedly, I've never served in the military but I find it impossible to believe that special forces vets would defer leadership to a surly, snarky detective with no combat experience but is super good at martial arts.
Also, I've done martial arts and I had a hard time following the descriptions of fight scenes.
This book is a total waste of time and money. It's not even the best zombie book titled Patient Zero. Read the one LT Ryan instead. JT Sawyer's Emergence is way better too. They're both free. I really hope Amazon will give me my money back.

I read the Joe Ledger short stories before this book and loved them. The writing was excellent and funny as he'll in placed. The characters were well developed and interacted unbelievably. Overall this is one of the best books I have read lately and I will be reading more from this author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Joe Ledger - the beginning
Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2013

The story opens with an assault on suspected terrorist in a dockside warehouse, and a massive gun battle that reveals itself to be much more than that. It was a staging area for a bioweapon to be introduced to the American population by El Mujahid, one of the world's most fearsome threats. Joe Ledger, former Ranger, will be swept up into the world of black ops and the DMS (Dept of Military Sciences) - meeting some great characters along the way - as he struggles to prevent the release of a virus that would spread worldwide in short order turning the world's population into zombies. Plausible science is a hallmark in these Maberry books and this is no different. There's no scenery-chewing or world-ruling here, just driven villains with an interesting take on a new bioweapon, and the agency trying to prevent that. Ledger is an engaging character that's capable of snappy dialogue, killer action, and a head full of conflict. Sounds like a lot of action heroes, you say? No one holds a candle to Maberry's Ledger. Trust me. This is the beginning to a series where the action and writing is second-to-none and you'll put down each book at the end desperate to pick up the next. This series straddles a fine line that I've referred a lot of people too: it incorporates action, intrigue, technothriller, sci-fi, science, and much more without alienating fans of any one genre. A hallmark to the engagement that the book offers. Start it now! Five books from now, you'll be a member of a growing army - those of us eagerly awaiting the next Ledger installment.

This was a well-written suspense story, with a lot of cool twists and turns. It was a zombie story, with a lot of great science. It was also a war story, with awesome battles and weapons and interesting spy-type technology. There was even a little romance thrown in! I loved it! It's the most fun I've had reading in a long time! I'm really looking forward to my next Joe Ledger novel!

I've become fascinated with the zombie genre over the last few years...since the Zombie Walk burst onto our local scene in 2010. I've been a devout Stephen King reader for as long as I can remember...eagerly devouring everything he's released. A close friend (and author) recommended Patient Zero as a "must read". I was not disappointed! Patient Zero blew me away! I gobbled up the pages, chomping my way from cover to cover in a short time, keeping up with the dizzying pace of the book...finishing breathless, satisfied and wanting more of the Joe Ledger capers. Maberry has become King's equal in my stable of authors, even rivals him at times. I quickly moved on to The Dragon Factory and now have The King of Plagues queued up for my next succulent read. In summary, absolutely dark and delicious! You will not be disappointed.

Jonathan Mayberry is one of the best I have seen in a long time. His character of Joe Ledger is iconic. Beautifully executed, Ledger is truly a brilliant man, who is also very flawed. His other characters are completely believable, especially Mr. Church, the man of many names. I doubt we will ever know what is his real name. Altogether, the DMS will have many more adventures to come. I hope they make it into a movie, with just the right cast.

I really enjoyed this book. I told myself I wasn't going to read any books from authors I didn't know. I was tired of reading boring books. I read the summary on Patient Zero and I thought I would give it a try. I am so glad I did. I am now going to read the other books in the series. Jonathan grabbed me in the first chapter and I hated to put the book down to do boring stuff like going to work.
