4.0 out of 5 starsEarns 3.5 Stars in Book 1 of this series but improves to 4.5 Stars by Book 4, "The Last Alibi"
Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2015
Since David Ellis was a new author to me and because I had very recently been so disappointed by several other new authors' highly-rated novels, I read the plot descriptions and many of the reviewers' comments for each of the 4 books in this series before I made the plunge. Of those 4 novels, I chose to read the one with the highest rating among the largest number of reviewers:"The Last Alibi". Now you might disagree with that methodology, and I'm quick to admit it has its drawbacks. I did truly enjoy reading that book, which kept my interest piqued to the very last page with its inventive twists and turns. Yes, I did have a few criticisms, but they were relatively innocuous so I gave it a rating of 4.5 stars.
Then I read "The Hidden Man," which is Book 1 of this series. Yes, I realize that's an unusual approach, but I was mostly interested to learn how much the author had grown and how much his writing had improved by comparing the two. Although Book 1 was an enjoyable read, its flaws were quite obvious - from character development, plot structure, continuity mistakes, and events that just defy belief. So I feel that 3.5 stars is a very fair rating.

Just as you would expect or at least would hope, this author has come a long way from the first book to the fourth.
BUT if you intend to read just ONE book in this series, I highly recommend "The Last Alibi" as a very good choice.

VINE VOICE
2.0 out of 5 starsHide, Not Seek
Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2010
By all accounts, David Ellis is good at his day job. He should be sure to keep it.

The Hidden Man, which Scott Turow proclaims to be "Ellis's best novel yet," does not justify forsaking his legal career. Its protagonist, Jason Kolarich, is one of those solo practitioners who works one case at a time. Beats me why he didn't turn down this gig, which poses not only immediate personal conflicts but virtually insurmountable ethical ones. Instead, he takes on the last minute defense of an old friend accused of murdering the pedophile believed - but never proved - to be responsible for the disappearance of that defendant's sister twenty years ago. All Jason has to do is help his buddy beat the rap notwithstanding solid evidence of guilt, follow the instructions of the third party who hired him (who clearly has an agenda of his own), and otherwise solve two cases - the present one and the one from twenty years ago. Piece of cake. At least it will take his mind off mourning his dead wife and child (reading the flashbacks closely, it seems like Jason has another infant daughter as well who somehow fell between the narrative cracks). And it will provide his wastrel brother with an opportunity to face some real adversity at the hands of sadistic mobsters and thereby grow beyond his self-destructive death spiral (but don't ask me why or how).

Does it seem that I think the plotting and the characters in this novel are outlandish? They are, and I do. The novel does have a nice flow to it, and the narrator's voice is well-modulated: he is self-conscious about the fact that he comes across as a wise-cracker. (I truly wish these smart-guy characters - or the writers who dream them up - would absent themselves from the genre to form some sort of off-the-page support group.) But all of it amounts to not very much. If Turow is right and this is as good as it gets for Ellis, I for one will not be plumbing his oeuvre.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love the twists and turns and unexpected reveals

I've only recently become acquainted with David Ellis and his guys - especially, of course, Jason. I'm currently reading about Paul Riley. I have been really impressed by the complexity of the stories and the multiple elements hanging just out of reach of the reader until the exact moment they can appear and catch one completely unawares (which is my kind of mystery)! I love the twists and turns and unexpected reveals, and the fact that everything is not handed to you on a silver platter, or continually hinted at or repeated. Then in reading some information about Mr. Ellis himself, I realized the Illinois / Chicago connection and some of the criminal elements he has dealt with, and it became clear where his plots must originate -- and I am sure he has a lot of inspiration on a daily basis! And at one point I was reading a James Patterson book and thought it was even more intricate and intriguing than usual, and saw that he had co-authored it with none other than ... David Ellis. Thanks for your excellent books, Mr. Ellis -- please, please keep up the great work!

How many times can Mr Ellis pull this off?! I wonder. I have to keep reading! I've read 2, so far . Why he ever co-authored with James Patterson, I'll never know. Mr Ellis doesn't have to share the spotlight with anyone!

I enjoyed this Book 1 enough to order Book 2. I love mysteries where I have a hard time figuring out the ending. Although I began to suspect certain parts of the ending, I never put it together until the final reveal. A very engaging and entertaining mystery. A great airplane or beach read!!

I enjoyed the humor that is expressed throughout this book, mostly unexpected, but always amusing. Instead of jokes about an attorney, he makes the humorous thoughts and comments! I read his second Jason Kolarich novel, since the first was so enjoyable. Definitely worth reading!
