Mediocre, but the surprise ending is good

I first read this book as a teenager and enjoyed it much better than I did as an adult. The best literature is that which remains interesting and absorbing as well as clever no matter how many times you read it or in which decade of life you read it. If you're a teenager or younger you might enjoy this as I did, but this is too simply written and not involving enough for a well-read adult to enjoy.
I do remember how surprised I felt at the ending the first time I read this book. But even as a teenager I would not have recommended the third book in this series. The author had a brilliant idea for ending this book but then overused that brilliant idea as part of the plot in the third book. If you read the first book in this series, Dragon's Blood, you can stop there if you felt satisfied. But if you read on, I would suggest you stop after reading the second book. The plot just gets muggier and weirder. The first book remains the best of the series.
