4.0 out of 5 starsCrazy story of how US army tried to create a unit of psychics Sounds ridiculous and it was
Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2020
Men Who Stare At Goats was a quirky comedy based off of a book of the same name that looked at the U.S. military’s attempt to weaponize psychic powers. It featured Ewan McGregor as investigative reporter Bob Wilton who discovers George Clooney was Lyn Cassady who was the lead psychic in the army’s program, Jeff Bridges was Bill Django the army officer who wrote a manual on how to use psychic powers and organized a unit. That was backed by Stephen Lang as General Hopgood who was convinced the Soviets were doing psychic research so America had to respond. Finally, there’s Kevin Spacey as Sergeant Larry Hooper who joined Django’s unit and acted like a jerk to everyone and destroyed their comradery. As Cassady told Wilton he worked in Project Jedhi and the goal was to create super soldiers each with their own superpower. The whole thing was based upon Django researching the hippie movement and drugs in the 1970s. Afterward he came up with the New Earth Army. This movie explains their activities and aftermath up to the Iraq war.

The story is crazy because it’s basically based upon a soldier, Django, who became a hippie. It’s nuts that he would be able to get the military to back his ideas. I guess during the Cold War if the U.S. thought the Soviets were doing something crazy the Americans would follow in kind.

There’s plenty of comedy as well. Seeing Django talking about bringing flowers and indigenous music to people and the “sparkling eyes technique” to spread peace was hilarious.

If this all sounds ridiculous that’s the point. It’s meant to be absurd, and that’s proven to be even more so as some of this really happened. This all adds up to a highly entertaining and crazy movie.

I know this movie was supposed to be funny, perhaps satirical, but to me it was just stupid. Perhaps, with all those left leaning men in the lead roles they were just taking cheap shots at the Army, the CIA, etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you've ever in the Army then you'll get this movie...otherwise it is a pretty good story

A really good story with some twists and turns you may not see coming. Definitely worth watching.

And the SF (Special Forces) goat lab is a real thing I know cause I went through 91D (OR Tech) school at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio I was lucky enough to meet some of the SF troops and found out they had to go through very rigorous medical training they learn in 9 months what a civilian PA (Physicians Assistant) learns in 4 years...the goat lab was the final test they had to pass for their medical training...

4.0 out of 5 stars To every halfway decent story, a kernel of truth
Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2021

Sure, this movie and the hackneyed arch-leftist journalism it is based on are pointlessly derogatory to the military, and full of weak tropes designed to make viewers feel better about fringe Marxist political pundits, and more sympathetic to terrorism. But it contains a kernel of reality, showcasing the damage done to Western civilization as the US government has forsaken proper military training in favor of loopy social justice agendas. And, surely as a mere coincidence, it rips off some of the philosophy and core plot mechanics of Gordon R. Dickson's Childe Cycle books (in particular Tactics of Mistake and Necromancer), which are on the whole a vastly superior example of military science fiction. For those who want to see this story done right, read the original Dorsai! trilogy. As a side note, Clooney and Stephen Root are, as always, stellar actors deserving of all available praise for their talent here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't you dare kill that goat . . .

This film is both strange and funny, and frighteningly, partly (or mostly?) true. The cast does an excellent job portraying these very off-the-wall characters, who are based on real people or compilations of real people. The premise of the film is a story about men who were, supposedly, part of a U.S. military secret weapons program -- a program which primarily focused on the development of directing extraordinary mental powers and new age thinking to gain military advantage and defeat enemies. As I viewed the film, I felt a combination of utter disbelief, amusement and some horror at the fact that these people actually believed in what they were doing and accomplishing. Fortunately, the film expertly walks that fine line between the seriousness of the characters and the absurd humor that springs from their beliefs. While this is definitely in the category of a "weird film," it is quite funny and enjoyable, and I'm glad I purchased it.

Great casting, amusing comedy film about psi-ops used in the military to try (big emphasis on try) to undo the enemy with psychological warfare. Lots of cameos of character actors in this film from 2009 that a decade later you see in more prominent roles in 2020, example Nick Offerman of Parks and Recreation. Loved the last scene of our main narrator...won't give it away, but no one better in that role.

I didn't know anything about this movie going into it. I hadn't seen any preview or read anything about...the cast just really appealed to me. Not having any expectations is probably the best way to view it. As Amazon's synopsis will tell you, the movie centers around Ewan McGregor's schlub of a journalist stumbling onto a group of psi-ops "Jedi" who once worked for the government. The comedy ensues from his attempt to figure out whether these people truly believe what they're saying, or if he's been excluded from some really sick joke. Jeff Bridges is at his hippie best here, and Clooney gives a tongue in cheek performance as the one "mind Jedi" who really seems to take his beliefs off the deep end. McGregor is unfortunately relegated to being background filler, his comedic talents not being utilized by half. Don't kill yourself trying to wrap your mind around this movie the first time you see it...it's not nearly as meaningful as it tries to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully Askewed Comedy

This flick falls into the love it or hate it category. Personally, I liked it alot but I recognize the scattershot nature of some of it's humor. If I could nutshell it imagine if the Dude from the "Big Lebowski" trains a unit of psychic warriors for the military. May sound implausible but I'll have to ask my brother who's retired from the Army's Intelligence Corps for his opinion. In an economic running time the makers get as much out of the gag as they possibly can and leave you satisfied. The talented cast is game and engaging and the aforementioned Jeff Bridges is a standout here. When this came out it got a mixed reception from the critics and the reviewer from "Entertainment Weekly" gave it an F. Maybe home video is the best place to view this flick but I would recommend this audacious film to the most ambitious cineastes.

That they pass off as real, sort of. I found the Army satire funny, probably particularly as a former member. The Army scenes are well done and realistic aside from the satire.

Able now to understand certain operations and techniques that normally are never discussed but most will miss not realizing certain CIA technics. Maybe best to watch when you have time to focus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Film - Well Acted

An excellent film with fine acting and a very good story. Worth more than one viewing. Both video and audio are high quality. Video has excellent depth to the image and good color fidelity. PCM audio is top quality. Rear channels add dimension but not much else. This is a surprisingly good movie, something of a sleeper that deserves a higher rating than generally given by the critics. You will most likely talk about this film after you see it. If you enjoyed "Oh Brother Where Art Thou," you will enjoy "The Men Who Stare At Goats." Recommended. (Viewed on 1080p, 120hz screen; audio KEF Reference and Sequerra T1 speakers, with appropriate cables and electronics.)
