Nice surprise!

We are the last people in civilization to actually see "The Sopranos." But we were getting desperate for something to watch, and so we put it on our Amazon Prime watchlist. Really enjoyed season 1, episode 1. Also watched episode #2. Far better than we had imagined. Although it is an interesting story about family and the mob, we really appreciate the well-written script and the humor (which often is quite subtle).

Now we understand why everyone else liked this series!

If you're a REAL Sopranos fan like I am, you will be annoyed that they edited out bits here and there. I first watched The Sopranos when it first came out on HBO and videotaped them every week. Over the last twenty years, I've watched them over and over and then bought the Complete DVD set and watched those constantly. Yes, I'm a huge Sopranos fan.
NOW, too lazy to keep changing DVD's (I know, I'm lazy) I decided to PURCHASE the Sopranos, season by season here on Amazon. I know the Sopranos by heart. I noticed that little bits and pieces of each episode are edited out. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???????????. Only a few words here and there, BUT STILL. I DID NOT EXPECT AN EDITED VERSION OF THE SOPRANOS.

Ground-breaking for its time but the storytelling doesn't hold up after a few episodes. Chase had a great concept but it was too thin to support many episodes. Should've had a strong ending at about 12 episodes.

A soap opera dressed up with naked boobs and a mob theme

I held on until the end on Season 1 to see if they'd make any big conclusions/changes, but they don't. Like any other soap opera the point is to have a few main characters do a boring tug-of-war with each other with none of them making progress. All the swearing, boobs, and occasional murders are kind of festooned in there to give the show a theme/flavor, but it's still just a family soap opera like The Young and the Restless, Once Upon a Time, or some other schlock.

Too late to the show . . .

You know, when everyone else was raving about this show I was working 18 hours a day. Now I'm retired. I love satire on a themed substrate. To me, the first episode or two were well-performed and realistic and entertaining, but after that the show just sputtered and failed for me. This is definitely not a serialized "Godfather." That movie--1,2 &3--is everlasting, built around a theme of violence as a necessary carry-over from the Old Country, one of the few ways new immigrants from Sicily could tap into the American dream. It was built around hard-as-iron personalities pitted against siblings with parasitic tendencies and weakness of personality. Character was defined by its microcosm. The Sopranos simply doesn't have that. There's not sense of family, at least from my take, and no eternal ties to the Old Country. Maybe I'm out of synch. Perhaps I'm a few years late in watching what more closely aligned with the times at the production. I've tried not to be gratuitous, but this one doesn't cut it for me.

The voices and attitudes of New York/New Jersey Italians is irritating. This is about a whole bunch of unhappy self-important people constantly scamming and killing each other. I don't see the attraction. The camerawork and dialogue are good, but the setting and subject is terrible.

I AM NOT A BIG FAN OF THE SOPRANOS. It is a Soap Opera too melodramatic and over the top. I love Gandolfini as an actor but I feel this show fell short of what could have been a Great show. I am from these same streets and grew up knowing some of the real people: though moments were at time good and very good, the times it disappointed where much more frequent and unforgivable from my POV. The Sopranos is to the Godfather, what Soap-Opera is to Opera. It is a bad rip off and caricature of real people and events in Jersey.
