I read this book with a group of 4th graders who were studying it for battle of the books this year. It's very well-written in terms of being entertaining and relatable for that age group. However, for my students two things really stuck out that they didn't like. First, they felt like this book was the "boy version" of Dork Diaries. I'll be honest, I'm not sure which book came first--just want to give a ten-year-old's perspective. Second, they thought that although he was sort of funny that Nate was mostly a really big jerk. In fact, while we were reading it my group kept interrupting me to point out just how big of a jerk Nate really was and it became a sticking point that made it a little difficult to move through the book. When asked if they would be reading more Big Nate books they all said "no."
As a parent, I can say that there are certainly much worse choices for children to make than Nate. This book is no "Maniac McGee" but it IS funny and should hold the interest of most late-elementary aged readers.

My 8-year old son started reading this with a friend and now wants to read all the Nate books. He's an advanced reader and can finish one of these in an hour-and-a-half/two hours. It would be a good book to read with your child - though as a parent you might not find the humor as entertaining. Sitting with your child as they read, explaining the occasional word, and enjoying their laughter is well worth the eye rolls at the juvenile humor.

I bought this for my youngest son who is my least enthusiastic reader. He loves these books so much he stays up past bedtime reading them and talks about them at the dinner table. These are great "bridge" books to help kids cross over from the instant gratification of picture books to the longer investment required of chapter books.
