A better choice for my daughter
Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2017
There's a more recent YA novel about the Aleut forced relocations that I'd thought about getting my daughter for Christmas, but I changed my mind after reading reviews about how inaccurate that book is. One of the reviewers recommended this book to me instead.
I'm so glad! This is exactly what my daughter will love! She already wanted to know more about the Japanese internments, so I've also got her a YA about that, "Journey to Topaz" by Yoshiko Uchida. This is a perfect companion, and also for itself. I love its poetry. I know my daughter will too. She's just a kid, but she's alert to the horrors in the world. She wants the truth about them, but she also wants to know how to respond with strength and hope, like the girls in these books do.
(P.S. The other book I decided against is "Kiska" by John Smelcer. Very dishonest!)
