Top critical review
I'm a fan of Cummins but this won't be well received.

There's no doubt that Jeanine Cummins is a wonderful writer. I loved American Dirt and intend to read her other books. This one, however, just didn't appeal to me. I felt it to be slow up to about the 70% mark on my Kindle, where it then gained some momentum. Yet near the end, her lengthy and repetitive descriptions became tedious for me. I found myself hurrying through the last pages just to be done with it. I wish I could say I was rewarded for sticking with this story but instead I received an unsatisfying ending. Now I feel the need to interject here that I don't have to have a tidy, happy ending when I read but I felt that Cummins intentionally poked and prodded our wounded hearts for far too long. I reached a point where I said out loud, "Oh COME on!"
