How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsWas not very useful with my teen, but surprise, surprise, worked like a charm for my 7 year old.
Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2017
I have a 15 year old daughter and while there are no major problems and we communicate very openly and honestly about everything, there are still moments where I feel that either I am treating things the right way or she is being rude. I bought the book hoping that it would greatly improve our already good rapport. This book is probably very helpful for parents who do not have an open line of communication with their teens, parents who are either too strict or too lenient or too afraid to have honest conversations with their kids. I did not find the book personally to be very helpful because my daughter has the maturity of a 25 year old and will laugh at some of the most of the tricks and tips described in this book. However, this did not turn out to be a complete waste because I started using some of the techniques with my spoiled little bratty 7 year old and it worked! An example: one evening he was majorly pissed because he could not get home in time to watch his TV show. So instead of trying to calm him down in a traditional way by telling him that it was not a huge deal, I used the fantasy strategy from the book and said "Wouldn't you wish the car could just fly and we would be home in a second?" Right away, his tears stopped and he said "Yeah, and I also wish that you could always go back and see the missed parts of your shows" to which I said "You know, someone thought about that and invented DVR, we don't have it at our house, but we can look into it, OK?" At that point, he was all smiles. One very important point I learned from the book, as parents, we tend to often disregard our kids feelings about what we perceive to be minor things such as missing a show, but to kids, these things are major. We can't expect them to yet understand that such small problem is nothing compared to major bad stuff that happens in the world.

3.0 out of 5 starsHelpful resource BUT homophobic content
Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2021
I am a therapist and ordered this book so that I could get a sense of whether or not I would recommend it to the parents of my teenage clients (I am not a parent myself). Overall, I found the book enjoyable to read with plenty of relatable examples and tangible strategies for approaching conflict in a constructive way. However, I was very disappointed in the final chapter of the book by some of the author's comments regarding how a parent reacts to their child being gay. On page 178, she writes "Coming to terms with a teenager's homosexuality is never easy for any parent." This type of language and rhetoric reinforces the idea that to be gay is problematic and reveals some of the author's personal bias against LGBTQ folks. I do think it is important that parents are provided with tools and resources for ensuring that they are able to have supportive conversations with their children about sexuality, bu this one section of the book needs to be updated to reflect more inclusive language that does not connect gayness with something to be feared or dreaded by parents.

1.0 out of 5 stars this book is great if you are a sarcastic parent that yells a lot

I purchased this book based on the reviews hoping that it would provide some useful tools for getting my 12-year-old daughter to open up a bit about middle school, boys, sex, and the challenges she perceives.

The book is very accessible and easy to read however, the tone and advise is tailored to parents who yell and continually shut down and put down their kids. If you have any sense of positive and supportive communication or listening skills this book is not for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not so successful with my pre-teen

Maybe the book is better but if it has the same substance as the audio book I didn't care for it.
The audio gabbed and gabbed and gabbed talking about what could possibly go wrong with your teenagers and how frustrating it is, but then only spent a short period of time giving you a solution. Some of the solutions, or the way she wants you to talk to your teens is a little condescending. If I said this to my pre-teen I would feel like I was treating her like she was 5 years old.
My daughter was so frustrated one night after a fight she was having with her sister, I tried to talk to her, in the way the book/audio recommended and she shoved me and told me to get out of her room.
Later on I went back to talk to her and didn't even try and use what this book told me and I had huge success.
I guess this book can be good but nothing comes down to your relationship with your teen and using your instincts to help them through their trials.

The book wasn't what I expected. I just wanted to read something that would help not have to get a group of people together to discuss with the children their problem. Teens aren't going for this type of stuff.

I've read a few books on teens. None are helpful so far. The conversations in this book are unrealistic and would not work with my own teen daughters.

The concepts are there, the reading is obnoxious. The prolog sounded good and positive, but the content felt very negative.

1.0 out of 5 stars DARE rhetoric wrapped in psychobabble
Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2006
In terms of ludicrous inanity, Faber and Mazlish fall somewhere between a commercial for the Mormon Church and the novel, Go Ask Alice. Their second ride on the How to Talk so Kids Will Listen cash cow is DARE rhetoric wrapped in psychobabble, in which the parents are far more concerned with coaxing obedience from the teens than developing their minds or even getting to know their personalities. Sit-com-like, they solve everything from broken curfews to promiscuous sex by "giving in fantasy" and "saying it in a funny way." When all else fails, they resort to propaganda, telling the kids that condoms are ineffective protection against STD's and that marijuana is more cancer-causing than tobacco. Don't laugh - millions of parents and professionals take these books entirely seriously!

Way overpriced in my opinion. Doesn’t really address the issues I have with communicating with my son and feel it’s a bit patronising. I feel these conversations would be okay in an ideal world. It’s not what I wanted at all and really disappointed, particularly given the cost.
