Disney's effortless pastiche to Verne marred by a clumsy 1080p transfer

Disney Inc. continues to mine its back catalog via their exclusive Blu-ray club. I wouldn't mind it so much if they were offering exceptional quality for their buck. But no, In Search of the Castaways, featuring memorable performances from Maurice Chevalier and Haley Mills as explorers who travel to the ends of the earth to find Mill's father, a captain presumed lost at sea, is a badly mangled affair on Blu-ray. While colors are robust, there are glaring examples of edge effects scattered throughout. A lot of the movie is the result of exceptional matte work composited with live action, so the loss of a generation in overall clarity is anticipated. But a little digital tinkering ought to have been applied to correct crop marks around the edges, and smooth in the continuity of these time-honored effects that appeared far more seamless on the big screen than they do on this transfer. Worse, baked in age-related dirt and scratches abound during these process shots. Badly done. Pass and be very glad that you did.
