5.0 out of 5 starsFantabulous!

My son and I just finished this book. It's the third in the Underland Chronicles. We've been reading the books since the first one; now we have two left to go. Anyway, my son says his favorite so far is the first book, Gregor the Overlander, but we both agree that THIS book—so far—has the best prophecy. He rated it five stars. The entire book is excellent, but the last few chapters were mesmerizing. We stayed up well past his bedtime last night, finishing it. We just could not put the book down!

One of the main aspects that I love about this series is that the main character, Gregor, is a little black boy from a low-income family in New York City. It's so unusual, especially when you consider that the author is a white female. As my son and I read this book, we had discussions about real-life issues. I tell him, just like Gregor did at one point in the story, some kids do have water for breakfast, and some boys only have one pair of shoes like Gregor does. I love making him aware of these real-world issues; I think it is essential to his becoming a kind and considerate, empathetic member of society.

Anyway, these books are fantastic! Ms. Collins has terrific talent; I am completely awed by her ability to weave a story that enraptures one. Needless to say, I highly recommend this book, and indeed the entire series. Happy reading!

Fun read with all the excitement of continuing the chronicles series. Not as good as the first two novels but still really good.

This book in Collins's series continues to offer readers a fast-paced, suspenseful, and gripping plot. The reader is compelled forward as the characters engage one crisis after another. It truly is a very enjoyable experience. However, I continue to have two problems with this series. First, the age of the main character diminishes the ability of the reader to accept the text unquestioningly. The character's age interferes with the reader's ability to suspend disbelief. At 11, Gregor is physically and emotionally unable to do what his creator requires of him. Collins even openly addresses the age issue in the text, but she offers no resolution to the problem because there can be none. Second, readers must be mature enough to handle the very graphic nature of several aspects of the text. The plague descriptions, the trip through the jungle, and the battle with the ants are the three plot points that are unsuited to readers who are the age of the main character. I will continue to recommend this text to my adult friends, but I will caution those with children to consider the maturity of their impressionable youth before handing it over to them. The bottom line is that Gregor should be at least 13 and his readers should be as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Great Book!

The adventure is out of this world! Well, actually it is under this world - under New York City, to be exact. As in the first two books, there's a death-defying quest. And, there is death along the way, but also discovery and two resurrections of long lost friends.

Gregor, our young, but old for his eleven years, hero, once again follows his heart and head to put the clues together to solve 'The Curse of the Warmbloods.' Suzanne Collins has created a hero whose character, strengths AND weaknesses combine to make a truly fun and pertinent story for this time in our own history!

I loved this YA book! I'm 55 years old and like sci fi and fantasy. When I read the small summary it sounded really fun. But it is for young adults. The primary character is an 11years old boy though he acts like a16years old who's very responsible for his age! His adventures underground w giant rats, bats, and cockroaches are fast-paced and packed with emotion. The relationship with his little three years old sister is hilarious. She has a positive effect on everyone, and ends up being cared for by all, even from the supposed enemy. If you enjoy a good dystopian adventure that's easy to read you'll love this!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Deceptively Simple

Gregor and Boots return to the Underland, this time along with their mother. Gregor has been studying the Prophecy of Blood, but is having trouble understanding and deciphering this one. A terrible plague is killing the Underland’s warmblooded creatures. When their mom contracts the plague, Gregor the Warrior and Boots the Princess have no choice but to join the ill-fated group on a quest to find a field of Starshade, believed to be the cure to the Plague.

This third book in the Gregor the Overlander series was just as good as the previous two. I read it out loud to my 9 and 7 year old boys and, once again, they were begging me to buy the next book as soon as we finished this one. These books are deceptively simple. On the surface they seem like just a nice fantasy story about giant creatures and humans who live under the earth, but when you start thinking about them, they are really about so much more. The boys are understanding some of the deeper meanings and have had good conversations about them. There are some disturbing bits in this one, such as how a rat dies and also the loss of two characters in battle. Most disturbing is the ultimate meaning of the Prophecy. I highly recommend reading Gregor And The Curse Of The Warmbloods.

I really never saw myself reading books for ages "9 and up," but a friend recommended the series and I became hooked. The first book had me hesitant, I'm not usually a big fan of child narrators, but Collins proved me wrong. The other problem I usually have with younger age books is that they are too simplistic. Once again, Collins proves me wrong. The writing is simplistic enough to be believable for a 12yr old's point of view, but the plot itself is unpredictable and full of really good twists and keeps you thinking.

The action pieces are also something I did not expect, as I thought they would be downplayed for a younger age. Instead, they are well written and demonstrate the brutalities of battle (even if the ones fighting are not human) and although not the most gruesome scenes I've read (I read horror genre too). I was surprised that the level of brutality was recommended for ages as young as nine, but as an older reader I found it refreshing to not have fights and battles sugar coated.

The characters are engaging and the whole Underland world is complete and intriguing with the many 'peoples' that live there and the differences all the groups have. I cannot recommend how a reader of say age nine would like this series, but I can say that as a 22yr old, if you don't mind reading something a 'the lower level,' I defiantly recommend it for many ages over 9.

I love all the Gregor books but this one is particularly grim. I am a middle-aged woman and still found many of the descriptions and plot points quite upsetting. Not sure if a YA would be any less unnerved.
I have read the series and this time I am listening to the audio version - I recommend the audio if that's your jam.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great adventure stories for all ages.

"The Underland Chronicles" by Suzanne Collins of "Hunger Games" fame are something like a combination of "Alice in Wonderland" and "Harry Potter", in which Gregor, an intelligent and highly principled boy from modern New York City, falls into Underland, a world far below the surface. In the stories, Gregor discovers heretofore unknown abilities in himself, and becomes mentally and emotionally mature beyond his years. This series is aimed toward grade levels 4 and up, and it would be an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys a good adventure story. It does contains a fair amount of violence, and several characters die throughout the series.

This book is the best of the Underland Chronicles. The problem/quest is compelling and is clearly laid out from the beginning, the prophecy is cryptic enough that I as a reader didn't really get it until the characters did, and the new characters are fantastic.

Hamnet, the kind yet conflicted outcast, brought a whole new depth to the series. His guilt over past wrongs and love for fellow creatures makes the Underland's conflicts and Regalia's role in them all the more heart-wrenching. His history also opens up a new understanding of the royal family, in particular the gulf between Vikus and Solovet.

I was a little confused about the change in title. Probably some editor influenced by Harry Potter, but really, not a good idea. I highly recommend the third installment of the Underland Chronicles. Typical Suzanne Collins, which means very good stuff.
